YouTube explicitly prohibits knowingly using a service to inflate live-stream traffic. What viewbotting means under YouTube’s rules
YouTube’s Fake engagement policy prohibits anything that artificially increases views, likes, comments, or other metrics. It applies to videos, descriptions, comments, live streams, and other YouTube products and features. The policy expressly lists “Any content that knowingly uses a service to artificially inflate live traffic (‘viewbotting’).” It also prohibits promoting third-party services that inflate metrics.

The policy distinguishes genuine interaction from artificial engagement: engagement is legitimate when a human’s primary intent is to authentically interact with the content. Coercion, deception, or engagement whose sole purpose is financial gain is not legitimate. Asking viewers to subscribe, like, share, or comment is allowed; ordinary calls to action are not themselves viewbotting.

Fake engagement and invalid traffic are related, not identical
“Fake engagement” is the platform-integrity policy covering artificial metric inflation. “Invalid traffic” is YouTube’s advertising term for activity that does not come from a real user or a user with genuine interest; it can include automated or incentivized third-party traffic. The concepts may overlap, but a suspicious view does not automatically establish an AdSense violation. YouTube’s invalid-traffic guidance addresses advertising consequences separately from the Fake engagement policy.
How YouTube says it detects viewbotting
YouTube says its systems analyze traffic to determine whether it is valid or invalid, regardless of where or how the traffic originated. In a September 3, 2024 TeamYouTube FAQ on invalid traffic, a TeamYouTube representative also said external users may use bots to systematically view videos for unsanctioned purposes.

The public guidance does not identify specific detection signals, bot signatures, review weights, or thresholds. It does not establish that a sudden view spike, a particular geography, retention pattern, device type, traffic source, or chat behavior is a confirmed detection criterion. Such observations may be reasons to investigate traffic or a promotion partner, but are not proof that YouTube has detected bots—or that bots caused the activity.
YouTube does publish a timing detail that can be easy to misread: subscriber counts shown on a channel homepage and watch page update in real time, while the subscriber number in Analytics is approximately 48 hours behind to allow verification and spam reviews. That is a subscriber-count reporting delay, not a viewbot-detection threshold.
What can happen to a channel or its earnings
There are two enforcement tracks. They can intersect, but one does not guarantee the other. YouTube says artificial traffic may not count and may result in policy consequences; advertising guidance separately describes how invalid traffic can affect ad serving, earnings, and the associated AdSense for YouTube account.

Policy warnings and strikes are conditional
YouTube’s Fake engagement policy explains that a first Community Guidelines violation will likely result in a warning without a channel penalty. If the creator completes policy training, the warning can expire after 90 days, with that period beginning when training is completed. A repeated violation of the same policy during that window may result in a strike; three strikes within 90 days may lead to termination. YouTube also reserves termination for repeated violations, a single case of severe abuse, or a channel dedicated to policy violations. These are possible outcomes, not a guaranteed ladder applied identically to every case.

Advertising measures can affect earnings without removing a video
YouTube may limit ad serving while it determines that invalid-traffic risk has fallen. When invalid traffic is detected, advertisers are not charged or are refunded where appropriate and possible, and associated creator earnings may be withheld or adjusted. Payment may be delayed for up to 90 days while traffic and earnings are investigated. Creators who believe a determination is mistaken may use the appeal route described in YouTube’s invalid-traffic guidance.
Removing or unlisting a video does not restore earnings attributed to invalid traffic. If ad serving is limited, YouTube says it may still recommend the content when relevant, and people may still find it through search.

Hiring a promoter does not shield a channel from the methods that promoter uses. YouTube says methods used by someone hired to promote a channel can affect the creator’s channel. TeamYouTube has also cautioned that a growth service may drive paid traffic without the creator’s knowledge, and that outside actors may use bots for unsanctioned purposes.

That means a suspicious traffic event alone does not establish creator intent. Deliberately buying artificial views, failing to vet a partner, and traffic caused by an outside actor are different circumstances, even though YouTube may review traffic regardless of its origin. Keep records of promotion agreements and ask partners how they source and deliver traffic; do not assume that a contractor’s activity is outside the channel’s risk.
How to reduce risk and respond to a notice
- Do not buy, operate, or promote artificial-engagement services. YouTube expressly prohibits knowingly using a service to inflate live traffic and promoting third-party metric-inflation services.
- Vet agencies and promotion partners. Ask where traffic comes from, how it is generated, and whether any automated or incentivized viewing is involved. Stop a campaign if the partner cannot explain its methods clearly.
- Do not treat ordinary promotion as automatically unsafe. YouTube says embedding content, using the Promotions tab in YouTube Studio, and varying ad formats such as mid-rolls do not increase invalid-traffic risk.
- Read the actual notice and account information. If YouTube reports invalid traffic, review the notice and the associated account or payment information, and allow for later Analytics or earnings adjustments.
- Use the available appeal route if you believe the decision is wrong. If you receive a policy or monetization notice, follow its stated instructions and use the appeal or creator-support options YouTube makes available. YouTube says it informs creators by email or in-product when monetization enforcement occurs and identifies available options; see its channel monetization policies.
- Do not delete or unlist a video to try to recover earnings. YouTube says that will not restore earnings attributed to invalid traffic.
