Trying to compare schedules across work, family, and shared calendars is where Outlook’s calendar UI can feel either perfect or frustrating. The good news: you can get a side-by-side view quickly—depending on whether you’re using Outlook for Windows, Outlook on the web, or Outlook for Mac.
This guide covers three reliable methods in 2024, with step-by-step instructions, what to click, and what to try when Outlook doesn’t show the layout you expect.

Why side-by-side matters (and when Outlook behaves differently)
Side-by-side calendar views reduce context switching. Instead of bouncing between days, you can scan availability across multiple calendars in one glance—especially when coordinating meetings across accounts or shared mailboxes.
Outlook’s behavior depends on the client:
Outlook for Windows supports a true column-based Schedule View.

Outlook on the web also provides a scheduling layout that’s great for comparing calendars.
Outlook for Mac is more limited, so the most consistent approach is arranging two calendar windows (or using overlay-style comparisons).
Prerequisites before you start
- You need access to the other calendar(s): If the calendar is shared, it must be added to your account and you must have permission (typically at least “Can view all details”).
- Know your Outlook version: “Outlook (new)” vs classic Outlook can change menus. The steps below cover common 2024 layouts, but labels can vary slightly.
- Use the correct calendar location: Schedule-style layouts require you to be inside the Calendar view (not Mail or People).
Quick Way 1: Use Schedule View in Outlook for Windows
This is the closest thing to a true side-by-side layout inside Outlook desktop. It shows multiple days across columns and lets you display multiple calendars together.
Step 1: Open Calendar
- Open Outlook on your PC.
- Switch to the Calendar view (bottom-left navigation bar).
Step 2: Add the calendars you want to compare
- In the left calendar pane, find My Calendars and/or Shared Calendars.
- If you don’t see the calendar yet, add it: right-click Shared Calendars (or an empty calendar area) and choose an option like Add calendar / Open shared calendar, then enter the mailbox owner or calendar name.
- Make sure the calendars are checked/visible in the list.
Step 3: Switch to Schedule View (side-by-side style)
- Go to the View tab in Outlook’s ribbon.
- Choose Change View.
- Select Schedule View.
- Optional: Adjust the time range and columns (depending on your Outlook build) so you see the days you want at once.
What you should see
You’ll get a grid-like schedule layout where events from the selected calendars appear in corresponding columns. If you turned on multiple calendars, Outlook typically color-codes them, so overlaps stand out.
Quick Way 2: View multiple calendars in Outlook on the web (OWA)
If you want the most consistent “compare schedules now” experience, Outlook on the web (OWA) is often faster to set up because the calendar controls are centralized.
Step 1: Open Outlook Calendar in a browser
- Go to
https://outlook.office.comand sign in. - Select Calendar from the app launcher.
Step 2: Make sure the calendars are visible
- On the left side, under My calendars, toggle the calendars you want to compare.
- If a calendar isn’t listed, use Add calendar (look for options like shared calendar add/open).
Step 3: Use a schedule layout that shows side-by-side time columns
- Find the view selector near the top (often showing Day, Week, or Schedule).
- Select Schedule (or switch to Week and enable schedule-style columns if your UI offers it).
- Set the date range to what you’re trying to compare.
What to watch for
OWA usually respects your calendar visibility toggles immediately. If events appear to “disappear,” double-check you didn’t mute a calendar or filter to a different date range.

Quick Way 3: Open two calendar windows and snap them side-by-side
This is the most reliable workaround when your Outlook client doesn’t offer a true schedule-grid side-by-side view for the calendars you need. You’re still comparing at the same time—just by using your OS window layout.
Step 1: Open Calendar once
- Open Outlook and switch to Calendar.
- Turn on the first set of calendars in the left list (so window A shows what you want).
Step 2: Open a second Outlook window (separate view)
- Open a second Outlook window using one of these common options:
- Right-click the Outlook icon on the taskbar and select Outlook again to open another window.
- Or use Window / New Window if your build provides it.
- In the second window, switch to Calendar again.
- In window B, toggle a different set of calendars so the overlap problem is reduced.
Step 3: Snap the windows side-by-side
- On Windows 11/10, drag each Outlook window to opposite sides until you see the snap outline.
- Release to lock them side-by-side.
- Use the same date range in both windows so you’re comparing like-for-like.
Why this works
Even when Outlook limits schedule-grid comparisons, each window can show a clean, readable subset of calendars. For planning meetings, that’s often better than an overloaded schedule grid.
Common problems and troubleshooting
1) The second calendar doesn’t show up in Schedule View
Check the calendar’s visibility toggle in the left calendar pane. Then confirm you actually selected Schedule View from View > Change View (not just switching the day/week layout).
If you’re using a shared calendar, verify permissions and whether the shared calendar is added under the same mailbox/account you’re viewing.
2) Events appear on the wrong day or time
This is usually a time zone mismatch or all-day event behavior. In Outlook for Windows, open the event and verify the time zone setting, then compare with the other calendar’s time zone (especially if one mailbox is configured in a different region).

In OWA, confirm you’re on the correct time zone in Settings. Different time zones can make “side-by-side” look wrong even when both calendars are correct.

- An Ideal Present Choice: This desk calendar is not only a great tool for yourself but also a thoughtful gift for family, friends, or colleagues. It helps them stay organized and work efficiently throughout the new year—making it a practical and meaningful present for any occasion.
3) Schedule View is missing from the menu
Your Outlook build may not include it or may use a different view system. Try switching back to classic Calendar view first, then re-check View > Change View.
If you can’t get Schedule View, use the two-window snap method (Quick Way 3) as the fallback.
4) Outlook on the web shows calendars, but the schedule layout looks empty
Verify you didn’t filter to a category, calendar group, or date range. Also confirm that the events are not hidden by default in that specific calendar (for example, if a calendar overlays but events are “turned off”).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHard refresh the browser tab after toggling calendar visibility. In some 2024 browser builds, state changes lag until refresh.
5) Shared calendars show but don’t update
In Outlook for Windows, try forcing a sync: close and reopen the Calendar view or restart Outlook. In OWA, sign out and back in if you’re still seeing stale data.
If the shared calendar has been recently granted, it can take a short time before changes appear.

Best practices for clean comparisons
- Use distinct calendar colors so overlapping events are easier to spot in schedule grids.
- Limit the number of calendars in any single view. Three to five calendars tends to be readable; more often becomes a wall of colored blocks.
- Prefer schedule-style views for meetings and day/week grid views for quick orientation.
- Standardize the date range across windows when using the snap workaround. It avoids false mismatches.
- When in doubt, compare one day first. If the side-by-side alignment is correct on one day, you can scale up to a week.
FAQs
Can I view calendars side-by-side in Outlook for Mac?
Outlook for Mac can display multiple calendars together, but a true schedule-grid side-by-side layout isn’t always available in the same way as Outlook for Windows. The two-window snap workaround is usually the most dependable approach for Mac users.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Will side-by-side work with multiple Exchange accounts?
Yes, as long as those calendars are added and visible in your Outlook calendar list. The biggest limitation is the client’s view support (Schedule View is strongest on Windows and OWA).
Why do all-day events look offset compared to the other calendar?
All-day events can behave differently with time zones and calendar systems. Check whether one calendar treats all-day events in UTC or local time and adjust your time zone settings.
Does Outlook on the web support the same layout as Outlook for Windows?
OWA supports scheduling views and calendar toggles, but the UI isn’t identical. The goal—compare schedules quickly—is the same, and you can usually achieve it by using Schedule/Week-style layouts and ensuring the right calendars are toggled on.
Final Thoughts
If you want the cleanest side-by-side experience inside Outlook, start with Schedule View on Outlook for Windows or use Schedule in Outlook on the web. When your client doesn’t cooperate, the two-window snap workaround is fast, readable, and surprisingly effective.
