In the U.S., streaming made up 48.6% of TV watch-time in May 2026, while half of U.S. consumers in a separate survey said they listened to music streaming services daily. Those figures describe different things: TV viewing share and self-reported listening habits. There is no single measure that ranks video and music services together, and the available figures do not support a reliable list of 35 independent, comparable statistics. The useful picture comes from keeping each figure’s source, geography, period, and denominator attached.
What do streaming statistics measure?
“Streaming use” can refer to a person who subscribes, a monthly active user, a share of television viewing, a count of plays, or a survey response. These are not interchangeable. The figures below cover U.S. television viewing, U.S. listener survey responses, global recorded-music industry results, Spotify’s company metrics, and U.S. viewing of streaming titles. Treat each on its own terms rather than combining them into a single popularity ranking.

How much TV viewing is streaming?
Streaming’s share of U.S. television use
Nielsen reported that streaming accounted for 48.6% of total U.S. TV watch-time in May 2026, up 1.0 percentage point from the prior comparison in its report. This is a share of television viewing, not the percentage of U.S. households with a streaming subscription. Nielsen’s Gauge measures ad-supported and non-ad-supported viewing and is not the currency TV rating used for advertising sales.
Distributor shares in May 2026
In Nielsen’s U.S. Media Distributor Gauge for May 2026, YouTube accounted for 13.8% of TV watch-time, its highest share to that point in the report and the largest distributor share cited there. Netflix represented 8.0% of TV usage, Prime Video 4.5%, and Roku Channel 3.1%; the latter two were platform highs in Nielsen’s report. These are shares of total TV use in the report’s measurement context, not subscriber totals or a streaming-only ranking.

What drove Prime Video viewing?
Nielsen attributed 5 billion Prime Video viewing minutes in May 2026 to the final episodes of The Boys. Prime Video’s 20 live sports events that month generated a combined 7.5 billion viewing minutes, according to the same report. These are viewing-minute totals for specified programming, not measures of unique viewers.
How popular is music streaming?
U.S. listening habits and satisfaction
MusicWatch’s 2026 survey for the Digital Media Association (DIMA) found that 50% of U.S. consumers said they listened to streaming services every day; among paid subscribers, the daily-listening figure was 58%. In the same U.S. survey, 94% of streamers said they liked or loved their service, 90% rated it good, very good, or excellent value, and 86% said streaming improved their connection with artists and music they love. These are self-reported survey answers, not observed listening measurements.

Music discovery and listening choices
In MusicWatch’s U.S. survey for DIMA, 69% of respondents named streaming as a main way they discovered new music. Social media was named by 50%; friends or family and music heard in TV or movies were each named by 38%. Respondents also said they used streaming to find brand-new releases (78%) and older songs (88%). These responses describe discovery habits, not the share of listening time attributable to each source.
Spending on recorded music
MusicWatch’s 2026 U.S. survey found that consumer spending on recorded music, including streaming subscriptions, was 27% higher than five years earlier. It reported approximate annual recorded-music spending of $434 per U.S. streamer and an average of $614 among paid on-demand streaming subscribers. The figures describe survey-reported spending for those groups; they are not streaming-service revenue per user.

Who took the U.S. survey?
MusicWatch surveyed 3,555 U.S. respondents ages 13–70 for DIMA, with fieldwork from December 21, 2025, through February 2, 2026. The sample was weighted to represent the U.S. internet-using population by age, gender, ethnicity, income, and region. Parallel studies in Canada, Brazil, Chile, and Mexico each surveyed 1,000 respondents ages 18–70, with fieldwork from December 17, 2025, through January 29, 2026. The cited listening, satisfaction, discovery, and spending findings above are U.S. results, not a pooled result from those five countries.
What do global music-streaming figures show?
DIMA’s 2026 release, drawing on IFPI’s report on 2025, put global recorded-music revenue at $31.7 billion and worldwide paid music-subscription users at 837 million. DIMA described global music-streaming revenue as more than $22 billion and around 70% of that year’s recorded-music revenue; IFPI’s summary characterized streaming-revenue growth as 7.7%, adding $1.6 billion. These are global industry measures for 2025, not counts of everyone who listens to music online. “Paid subscription users” should not be compared directly with a service’s monthly active users.

How large is Spotify’s audience?
Spotify reported 751 million monthly active users and 290 million premium subscribers for Q4 2025, up 11% and 10% year over year, respectively. These are Spotify-specific company metrics at year-end, not a measure of the entire streaming market; monthly active users and premium subscribers are distinct groups and should not be added together.

Are streaming audiences watching new releases or older titles?
Library titles and viewer estimates
Luminate’s 2026 U.S. midyear report counted nearly 19,000 library titles available on major streaming services, compared with 7,000 originals. In the report’s survey, TV viewers estimated that nearly 60% of their at-home viewing time went to content more than a year old, with the remaining 43% attributed to new content shortly after release. These are respondent estimates, and the rounded percentages may not add to exactly 100%.
Originals and viewing shares
Among major U.S. subscription video-on-demand services (SVODs), Netflix held 57% of original-content viewing time in H1 2026, according to Luminate; the report said that share was down year over year. This is Netflix’s share within the report’s original-content viewing measure, not its share of all U.S. TV use or of subscribers.
Luminate also reported that U.S.-produced TV premieres fell 15% year over year in H1 2026 and SVOD series volume fell 12%. Streaming original films made up seven of the ten most-streamed titles in the U.S. during that half-year, according to the report. These figures describe different production and viewing measures; a reduction in premiere or series volume does not by itself show that total streaming viewing declined.

How to read the numbers without a false “most popular” ranking
- Check the denominator: a share of all TV viewing, a share among SVOD originals, and a number of subscribers answer different questions.
- Keep the geography and period: Nielsen’s figures here are U.S. results for May 2026; DIMA/MusicWatch’s behavioral findings are U.S. survey responses collected across late 2025 and early 2026; IFPI’s industry figures cover the world in 2025; and Spotify’s metrics cover its Q4 and full-year 2025.
- Separate measured activity from reported attitudes: viewing shares and minutes are not the same as survey answers about daily use, satisfaction, or discovery.
- Compare like with like: rank services only when the source measures them on the same basis, in the same market, over the same period. A single global video-and-music league table would obscure those differences.
