The contents may include valuable records of how games were made, but their connection to developer Tom Tanaka is unconfirmed, and the report does not establish who owns the items now or whether researchers can access them.
What Pixel Game Squad reportedly found
Kotaku reported on October 6, 2026, that the owners of the Pixel Game Squad YouTube channel bought a storage unit at auction and posted a video showing its contents. According to Kotaku’s account of that video, the unit held a mix of vintage games and hardware, artwork, anime box sets, strategy guides, movies and toys, alongside materials that appeared to document game development.

The reported production materials included design documents, concept art and computer chips believed to contain game prototypes. These identifications have not been independently authenticated in the available reporting. Kotaku’s report names several examples:
- Chips believed to contain prototypes, including one associated with Contra III: The Alien Wars.
- Artbooks containing level designs for Double Dragon.
- A Virgin Interactive folio with documents about a Terminator game.
- Level-design layouts for the Super Nintendo game B.O.B..
Why the possible Tanaka connection is not confirmed
Kotaku says some materials bear the name Tom Tanaka and notes that Tanaka was credited as a level designer on The Terminator for Sega CD and an animator on Double Dragon for Game Gear. Those details make a connection plausible, but they do not establish that Tanaka owned the storage unit or that every item came from his work. Kotaku describes the ownership as unconfirmed.

The report also recounts a YouTube commenter’s claim that they worked with Tanaka at Virgin Games in the early 1990s, lost touch with him around 2020 and feared the worst. That is the commenter’s account, not independent confirmation of Tanaka’s circumstances. The available reporting does not resolve his identity or personal situation.
What is known about the sale and current custody
Kotaku identifies Aaron Stapish, also known as Riff, as the person who found the materials in the video. It reports his comment that much more gaming history had gone to many collectors. The report does not name those collectors or establish where each artifact is now.

Development records can help explain how a game was designed and produced. Concept art, level layouts and prototype code may preserve stages of a project that players never saw in a finished release. If materials become separated among private collections, researchers may have a harder time finding and studying them—but the reporting does not establish that collectors will deny access, or that the materials have been permanently dispersed.

Kotaku says commenters called for the materials to go to a museum and mentioned the Video Game History Foundation. The report does not say the Foundation received, evaluated or agreed to preserve any of the items. Its director, Frank Cifaldi, reacted on Bluesky; Kotaku reproduced his words: “I’m not saying they did anything wrong, it’s just deeply unsettling to think about.” That is a reaction to the video, not an allegation of wrongdoing or an institutional statement about the artifacts.
Kotaku also quoted an unnamed commenter saying: “This is not stuff that should be sitting on the shelf of some collector that views it as another purchase,” That comment expresses one view in the debate, not an archivist’s assessment or a position attributable to the Foundation.

Access and stewardship remain unresolved
The central issue is not simply whether private collectors or a museum should hold the objects. It is whether fragile, potentially significant records will remain identifiable, preserved and discoverable for future study. Private custody does not by itself prove that an artifact is inaccessible or unsafe; institutional custody does not happen simply because viewers call for it. The report establishes neither an agreement to transfer the materials nor a preservation plan.

For now, the public account documents a striking discovery and a reported path into collectors’ hands, but not a verified chain of ownership or a complete account of what survived. Any assessment of the materials’ historical significance will depend on confirming what the objects are and whether they can be documented and accessed.
