They are not mutually exclusive: a convention can host tournaments, while a tournament can be held online or as a standalone event.
What is a video game convention?
A convention is best understood by the range of things attendees can do there. It may bring together people to play, browse, learn, meet creators, and take part in gaming culture—not just to watch or compete. Gen Con describes itself as a consumer and trade experience dedicated to gaming culture and community, with tournaments among activities that also include exhibits, appearances, games, workshops, seminars, and art shows. That breadth matters more than whether an event includes competitive play. GameACon’s description, for example, groups a vendor hall, artist alley, demos, panels, Q&A, cosplay, and live tournaments within one convention. GameACon Rules & Guidelines

What is an esports tournament?
An esports tournament is organized competition in a specific video game. The 2022 guide from ESA, ISFE, ESA-C, and IGEA describes competitions with a concrete format and rules, plus a system for selecting or registering players or teams. The competition may be amateur or professional, and it may take place in person or online. What are esports? (ESA, ISFE, ESA-C, and IGEA)
#1 Best Overall
- Comfort is King: Comfort’s in the Cloud III’s DNA. Built for gamers who can’t have an uncomfortable headset ruin the flow of their full-combo, disrupt their speedrun, or knocking them out of the zone.
- Audio Tuned for Your Entertainment: Angled 53mm drivers have been tuned by HyperX audio engineers to provide the optimal listening experience that accents the dynamic sounds of gaming.
- Upgraded Microphone for Clarity and Accuracy: Captures high-quality audio for clear voice chat and calls. The mic is noise-cancelling and features a built-in mesh filter to omit disruptive sounds and LED mic mute indicator lets you know when you’re muted.
- Durability, for the Toughest of Battles: The headset is flexible and features an aluminum frame so it’s resilient against travel, accidents, mishaps, and your ‘level-headed’ reactions to losses and defeat screens.
The defining feature is the competitive structure: rules determine how matches proceed and how results are decided. A tournament’s format and eligibility requirements apply to its competition, not automatically to every activity at the venue hosting it.
How do they differ?
| Question | Video game convention | Esports tournament |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Offer a broad gaming and community experience. | Determine competitive results in a particular game. |
| Program | May combine exhibits, panels, demos, vendors, guests, cosplay, casual play, and tournaments. | Centers on matches and activities that support the competition. |
| Who participates? | Attendees can take part in different activities; access may vary by activity. | Players or teams enter through the tournament’s registration or selection process; others may attend as spectators if permitted. |
| Rules and outcomes | Rules vary across activities; a convention may have no overall competitive outcome. | Defined rules and a format govern play and determine results. |
| Where can it happen? | Usually organized as a gathering, with venue and access set by the event. | In person or online, according to the 2022 esports guide. |
Can a gaming convention have esports tournaments?
Yes. A tournament can be one scheduled activity within a larger convention. In that case, the event is a convention in its overall scope, and the tournament within it is a competition with its own rules, format, and entry process. GameACon’s listed program is one example. The reverse also happens: an event centered on competition can include a wider spectator and community program. Evo describes its 2026 event as a three-day celebration of competitive fighting games, while its official page also includes schedule, side activities, vendors, and venue information. Evo 2026
Are esports tournaments always held in person?
No. The 2022 guide identifies both online and in-person competition. A tournament’s location is separate from whether it is a tournament: the format, rules, and way players or teams qualify or register establish the competitive structure. What are esports? (ESA, ISFE, ESA-C, and IGEA)

What to check before attending or entering
The event label alone does not tell you what your ticket includes or whether you can compete. Check the organizer’s current schedule and rules for:
- Which activities are included with general admission and which require a separate ticket.
- Whether tournament entry requires advance registration, qualification, or a fee.
- Eligible games, age limits, player or team requirements, and match format.
- Whether spectators can watch, and where or how matches are presented.
- Venue details and whether the event or competition is online, in person, or both.
These arrangements can differ between activities and editions. GameACon, for example, distinguishes public areas from ticketed activities and handles tournament entry and rules per tournament. GameACon Rules & Guidelines

Why organizers’ game-use rules matter
Running a tournament is not only a scheduling question. WIPO’s 2026 guidelines recommend that organizers define details such as dates, territory, commercial character, prize pool and format, participants, fees, sponsorship, merchandising, and broadcast. Authorization to use a game can depend on those characteristics. WIPO Guidelines for Esports Tournament Organizers

Publisher policies are not interchangeable. Nintendo’s community tournament guidelines, published in 2023 and effective November 15, 2023, describe permissions limited to small-scale, not-for-profit events that meet its stated conditions. That policy is specific to Nintendo and should not be treated as a rule for every game or publisher. Nintendo Community Tournament Guidelines
