Video Containers Explained: MP4, MOV, MKV, and More

MP4, MOV, and MKV are containers, not codecs. Learn what they hold, how they differ, and why a file’s extension alone cannot guarantee playback.

A video container is the file structure that holds video, audio, subtitles, metadata, and other tracks. It is not the same as a codec, which determines how an individual media stream is encoded. MP4, MOV, and MKV describe containers—not a guarantee that every file with that extension will play in every app.

What is a video container?

Think of a container as a package for a media file’s components. It organizes one or more video and audio streams, and may also hold subtitles, chapters, metadata, and other track information. The container’s job is to keep those components together and describe how they relate; it does not, by itself, determine the picture or sound quality.

Apple’s documentation describes the QuickTime movie structure separately from the media and sample descriptions inside its tracks. Matroska likewise explicitly describes itself as a container, not an audio or video compression format. Apple’s QuickTime File Format documentation and Matroska Basics explain these distinctions.

How is a container different from a codec?

A codec is the method used to encode or decode an individual audio or video stream. The container holds those encoded streams and related information. A file might therefore be an MP4 container with one video codec and one audio codec, while another MP4 contains different codecs or additional tracks.

SSK Portable SSD 1TB External Solid State Hard Drive USB C Up to 1050MB/s
  • Capacity Display Variance: 1TB external ssd often appears as around 931GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 1 TB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
  • 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
  • Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
  • USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
  • Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity

This is why the extension alone cannot establish compatibility. A player must support the container’s structure and be able to decode the codecs and handle the tracks inside it. A familiar extension can still conceal an unsupported codec or subtitle format. Apple’s video media documentation distinguishes video media and sample data from the surrounding movie structure.

MP4, MOV, and MKV compared

Format What it is When its features may be useful What to check
MP4 / MPEG-4 A file type related to QuickTime’s file format, but distinct from MOV. Its internal file-type marker can identify format compatibility. When the receiving app documents support for the particular MP4 file and its contents. Confirm support for the actual codecs and tracks, not just the .mp4 extension.
MOV / QuickTime File Format Apple’s flexible media format, with tracks for video, sound, subtitles, and metadata. It shares structures with MPEG-4, but is not interchangeable with it. In workflows that use QuickTime structures or Apple-oriented media tools. Check the receiving app’s support and the actual contents of the file; MOV files need not all contain the same media.
MKV / Matroska An EBML-based audiovisual container. The .mkv extension is used for video files. When a file needs features such as selectable video, audio, or subtitle streams, chapters, metadata, or seeking. Make sure the player or editor supports both Matroska features and the codecs inside the file.

These format differences do not mean that one extension inherently gives better image quality or a smaller file. Those outcomes depend mainly on the encoded streams and their settings. Apple explains the relationship and distinction between QuickTime and MPEG-4 in its QuickTime File Format documentation; Matroska’s technical overview describes its supported container features.

SSK Portable SSD 250GB External Solid State Hard Drive USB C Up to 1050MB/s

How to choose a container

  1. Start with the destination. Identify the device, browser, player, or editor that must open the file. Check its documentation for supported containers, codecs, subtitle types, and track features.
  2. List the tracks and features you need. Consider separate language or audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, metadata, or requirements of a particular editing workflow.
  3. Choose a compatible combination. A container may support the tracks you want while the target app still cannot decode a codec or display a subtitle format inside it.
  4. Inspect the file if its label is uncertain. Extensions and MIME types can be wrong. Apple notes that QuickTime’s file-type compatibility atom can identify compatible specifications and preferred use beyond the filename extension or MIME type, and documents an example of an MPEG-4 file mistakenly named .mov or labeled with the QuickTime MIME type. See Apple’s file type compatibility atom documentation.

There is no universally best choice among MP4, MOV, and MKV. The right one depends on what the destination can read and what the file needs to carry.

Remuxing versus re-encoding

Remuxing repackages existing encoded streams into a different container without decoding and encoding the audio or video again. It can preserve the encoded streams and avoid quality degradation from another compression pass, but it does not make an unsupported codec decodable. The target container must also support the streams and track types being copied.

Re-encoding decodes and compresses media again. It can change compatibility, file size, or quality, depending on the codecs and settings used. If playback fails because the destination cannot decode a stream, changing the container alone will not solve that codec problem; re-encoding may be needed instead.

Matroska’s FAQ describes repacking streams into Matroska without altering them and names FFmpeg and HandBrake as media-workflow options. Their supported formats and interfaces can change, so consult each tool’s current documentation before following specific conversion steps.

Why won’t my MP4 play?

  • The video or audio codec is unsupported. The MP4 label describes the container, not necessarily the encoding inside. Check the file’s media information against the player’s documented codec support.
  • A track or subtitle format is unsupported. A file can include additional audio, subtitles, or other tracks the app cannot handle. Test a supported track or use a compatible playback app.
  • The extension or MIME type is misleading. Apple documents that a file’s extension or MIME type may not accurately identify its format. Inspect the actual file type rather than relying on the name alone.
  • The file itself may be incomplete or damaged. If its streams cannot be read consistently in an app that otherwise supports their formats, compare it with a known-good copy or export it again from the original source.

What this means for uploaded video
