Consider HEVC/H.265 or AV1 only after confirming that your specific platform and ingest method accept the codec and that your encoder can handle it in real time. Codec support depends on the route into the service, not just the service’s general encoder settings.
What a video codec does—and why the ingest route matters
A codec compresses and decompresses video. Your encoder uses one to package the video before sending it to a streaming service; the service then processes it for viewers. H.264/AVC, H.265/HEVC, AV1 and VP9 are video codecs. RTMP, RTMPS, HLS and DASH are ingest protocols: they describe how the stream reaches the platform.
That distinction matters because a platform may document several accepted codecs overall while supporting a narrower set on a particular protocol. Check the destination’s current guidance for the exact ingest route you plan to use. A codec that appears in general encoder settings is not automatically available on every protocol.
How the main live-streaming codecs compare
| Codec | When to consider it | Trade-offs and cautions |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 / AVC | Use as the compatibility-first starting point, or when the destination’s requirements are uncertain. | OBS describes H.264 as its default and broadly playable, but that is not a guarantee that every service or ingest mode has identical support. YouTube’s protocol comparison lists H.264 for RTMP, RTMPS, HLS and DASH. |
| H.265 / HEVC | Consider it when the platform and specific ingest method support it, including for YouTube HDR workflows. | OBS says HEVC can provide better quality than H.264 at the same bitrate or file size, but notes that it is less widely used in web streaming and has more restrictive licensing. YouTube’s protocol comparison lists it for HLS; YouTube Help also includes it in live encoder settings and specifies it for HDR. |
| AV1 | Consider it only when both the ingest route and your encoder support it, and your hardware or software can encode it at the required settings in real time. | OBS describes improved quality or file size compared with HEVC, but warns that real-time software encoding can require a high-end CPU. Its 2023 guide identifies hardware encoding on AMD RX 7000-series, NVIDIA RTX 40-series and Intel Arc GPUs; check current hardware and encoder support before relying on those examples. YouTube Help lists AV1 in its encoder settings, but Google’s protocol comparison does not list it for RTMP/RTMPS, HLS or DASH. Do not infer a supported protocol from the general settings list. YouTube Help says AV1 is not supported for HDR. |
| VP9 | Relevant to YouTube’s DASH ingest route, according to Google’s protocol comparison. | The cited guidance does not establish VP9 as the best general-purpose creator encoder choice. Treat it as a protocol-specific option, not a default recommendation. |
OBS’s codec guide is dated March 26, 2023, so its notes about hardware generations should not be treated as a current buying guide. Codec support and platform requirements can change; confirm them against your destination’s current documentation.

YouTube Live: choose the codec for the protocol
YouTube’s Help page, “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions,” describes encoder settings including H.264, HEVC and AV1, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval. It says not to exceed four seconds. The same page lists AAC or MP3 audio and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transmission. For HDR, it specifies HEVC and says AV1 is not supported.
Google’s separate third-party ingest protocol comparison, updated September 14, 2026, lists these combinations:

| YouTube ingest protocol | Codecs listed in Google’s comparison | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP | H.264 | Use H.264 when sending a standard RTMP stream under this comparison. |
| RTMPS | H.264 | RTMPS encrypts transmission; YouTube Help recommends it. The protocol comparison lists H.264 for this route. |
| HLS | H.264, HEVC | HEVC is listed for this route; confirm the workflow and settings in YouTube’s current instructions. |
| DASH | H.264, VP9 | VP9 is listed for this route, not as a general-purpose recommendation for all streaming workflows. |
The protocol comparison says HLS and DASH are encrypted and generally have higher latency than RTMP because they are segment-based. It also says newer codec support can provide better compression than H.264, allowing higher quality at a given bitrate or similar quality at a lower bitrate. These protocol-specific entries and the general encoder settings answer different questions; do not assume every codec named in the Help page works on every ingest route.
YouTube bitrate recommendations by resolution and frame rate
The following are YouTube Help recommendations, not universal codec requirements. The page groups AV1 and H.265 together in one column; the figures do not prove that either codec is superior to the other. Match the resolution and frame rate to your intended stream.

These values are from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings page accessed in 2026. They are recommendations for the stated resolution, frame rate and codec grouping—not guarantees of stream quality or a substitute for testing your upload connection.
A practical codec decision process
- Identify the destination and ingest protocol. Find the platform’s current encoder guide and determine whether your setup sends RTMP, RTMPS, HLS or DASH. Do not choose from a general codec list without checking the relevant route.
- Choose a codec listed for that exact path. For YouTube third-party ingest, Google’s comparison lists H.264 for RTMP and RTMPS, H.264 and HEVC for HLS, and H.264 and VP9 for DASH.
- Check your encoder’s real-time capability. If you are considering AV1, verify both hardware or software support and whether the encoder can sustain your chosen resolution and frame rate. OBS warns that software AV1 encoding can demand a high-end CPU.
- Set resolution, frame rate and bitrate together. Use the destination’s recommendation for that codec and output mode, then verify that your upload connection can sustain it. For YouTube’s listed settings, use CBR and begin with a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- For YouTube HDR, use the documented HEVC settings. YouTube Help identifies HEVC for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR.
- Test the complete stream before relying on it. YouTube recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate. Its Help page also advises testing with representative movement and audio, then monitoring stream health.
Multistreaming and other platforms
If you send one output to several destinations, choose a codec accepted by every destination on the relevant ingest route. If your workflow allows separate outputs, you may be able to configure distinct settings for each service. The available platform guidance does not establish one codec recipe that works everywhere. In particular, the cited Twitch Broadcasting Guidelines page did not provide accessible, verifiable codec details for this guide, so check Twitch’s current official requirements rather than relying on a specific codec claim here.
