Video Aspect Ratios Explained: Which One Should You Use?

Choose a video aspect ratio for its destination: 16:9 for conventional landscape viewing, 9:16 for portrait-first feeds, and 1:1 or 4:5 when the placement supports them.

Choose the aspect ratio for the place and screen where people will watch: 16:9 is the standard for YouTube’s computer player and conventional landscape video; 9:16 suits portrait-first viewing such as vertical short-video feeds. 1:1 and 4:5 are also common, but whether they fit depends on the platform and placement. Check the destination’s current guidance before recording or exporting.

What an aspect ratio means

Aspect ratio is the proportion of a frame’s width to its height. The University of Cambridge’s technical guidance describes it as “the shape of your video – the width compared to the height.” The first number refers to width and the second to height: 16:9 is wider than it is tall, 9:16 is taller than it is wide, and 1:1 is square.

Aspect ratio describes shape, not image detail. Resolution describes the frame’s pixel dimensions: for example, 1920 × 1080 is a 16:9 frame at 1080p. A video can keep the same aspect ratio at different resolutions.

Common video aspect ratios and when to use them

Ratio Frame shape Good fit Watch for
16:9 Landscape, wider than tall Conventional landscape videos, tutorials, presentations, and YouTube’s standard computer player. It may not fill a portrait-first feed as naturally as vertical video.
9:16 Portrait, tall and narrow Full-height vertical viewing. Cambridge’s guide associates it with Instagram Reels, Facebook Reels, TikTok, and LinkedIn. On a YouTube computer browser, a vertical video may appear with padding around it; player presentation varies with the device and video.
1:1 Square A balanced frame where the specific platform and placement support it. The sources do not establish a universal platform preference for square video.
4:5 Portrait, taller than square but less tall than 9:16 A feed layout where the platform’s current rules and composition make it suitable. Check the intended placement’s current specifications rather than assuming it will display like a 9:16 video.

These are practical starting points, not guarantees of identical display everywhere. Device, interface, feed placement, and platform updates can change how a video appears.

How to choose the right ratio

  1. Pick the destination and placement first. Decide whether the video is for a standard landscape player, a vertical short-video feed, or another layout. A platform may handle different placements differently.
  2. Choose the frame shape that fits that viewing context. Start with 16:9 for conventional landscape viewing or 9:16 for portrait-first viewing. Consider 1:1 or 4:5 when the target placement supports them.
  3. Check current official specifications. Do this before filming or exporting, especially if you plan to post the video in more than one place. Cambridge’s guidance also recommends checking the destination platform’s current requirements.
  4. Plan the composition for the chosen frame. Keep important action and text inside the area that will remain visible. If you need another ratio, make a deliberate reframe and inspect the result; an automatic crop may cut off a subject or text. There is no universal crop-safe margin established by the sources here.
  5. Export a separate version when the composition calls for it. A wide video cropped to portrait can lose important content, while adding empty space can make the subject small. Reframing for each destination gives you control over what stays in view.

What YouTube does with different frame shapes

YouTube identifies 16:9 as the standard aspect ratio for its computer player, but the player automatically adapts to the dimensions of the individual video and the viewer’s device. For some combinations, including 9:16 videos in computer browsers, YouTube may add padding. See YouTube’s video resolution and aspect-ratio guidance for its explanation of player behavior.

YouTube advises against adding black bars or padding directly to the video file. Baked-in bars can interfere with the player’s dynamic sizing. Export the video in its intended frame shape and let the player adapt.

If your video will run continuously on YouTube

Aspect ratio is determined by the video you create; a service that plays an uploaded video does not replace the need to choose and frame it for its intended display. For a 24/7 YouTube stream made from uploaded videos, StreamNeo lets you upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live while it loops from the cloud. It streams to YouTube, not from a camera. If that workflow fits, try StreamNeo’s first free day; no card is required.
