Video Aspect Ratios Explained for YouTube Live Streaming

YouTube Live supports horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 formats, including dual-format streams. Learn how to choose a layout, check the crop, and prepare encoder settings.

For YouTube Live, 16:9 is the conventional horizontal format, while 9:16 is the portrait format for vertical mobile viewing. You can stream in both at once: YouTube’s Live Control Room supports a horizontal and a vertical output under one live event. Its default vertical layout crops the horizontal image, so check the portrait preview and keep essential action and text in view.

What aspect ratio means—and what it does not

An aspect ratio describes the relationship between a video frame’s width and height. It is separate from resolution, which describes the number of pixels in that frame.

  • 16:9: horizontal widescreen. Both 1920×1080 and 1280×720 are 16:9.
  • 9:16: vertical portrait, suited to full-screen mobile viewing.

Changing a stream’s resolution does not change its composition. A 1920×1080 image remains landscape even if you lower its resolution; making a portrait version requires a vertical composition or a crop/layout that produces one.

Choose horizontal, vertical, or both

Format Good starting point Main tradeoff
Horizontal 16:9 Shows, gameplay, presentations, and events designed for desktop or television viewing. Vertical-feed viewers may see a crop rather than a portrait composition designed for their screen.
Vertical 9:16 Mobile-first portrait content. Requires framing and graphics designed for a tall screen.
Dual 16:9 + 9:16 When you want horizontal and vertical viewing formats under one live event. You need to review the vertical crop or layout and graphics as well as the horizontal output.

YouTube Help describes the computer player’s standard ratio as 16:9, while the player adapts to other video ratios, including vertical and square. YouTube also says vertical live streams can appear while viewers browse Shorts in the mobile app and open in a full-screen mobile experience. These are format and platform behaviors, not a guarantee of greater reach or engagement.

How YouTube Live handles dual-format streaming

YouTube Help says Live Control Room streams go live in both horizontal (16:9) and vertical (9:16) formats by default. The outputs share one live event and URL, and viewers receive one go-live notification. Viewers browsing the Shorts feed on mobile see the vertical version; other viewers see the horizontal version.

Review the portrait layout before going live

The default vertical output is a center crop of the horizontal image. Live Control Room also offers layouts such as fit to phone width and stacked, plus zoom and position adjustments. Because a crop can remove content near the left and right edges, keep faces, important action, text, and overlays inside the part of the frame that remains visible in the vertical preview. YouTube does not publish a pixel-based safe-area specification in the cited guidance; treat this as a practical check, not a fixed measurement.

Review both previews and choose the layout that suits the source. A separately composed or stacked vertical layout can be preferable when cropping would cut off important content. You can adjust zoom and position while live if you edited the layout in the editing canvas.

Set up a dual-format stream

Using YouTube Live Control Room

  1. Open Live Control Room and configure the live event.
  2. Review the horizontal and vertical previews. Choose center crop, fit to phone width, or stacked, and adjust zoom or position as needed.
  3. Check the portrait preview for cropped content, text, and overlays; make layout changes before viewers need to see them.
  4. Start the stream and monitor stream health.

Using an external encoder

  1. Configure the external-encoder dual-stream workflow using RTMP(S).
  2. Use a second stream key for the vertical stream. Match each video format to its corresponding stream key.
  3. Confirm both previews and check that each output has the intended composition before starting.
  4. Start the stream only after both formats are ready. YouTube’s guidance says the vertical format cannot be added after the stream has started.

Encoder settings are a separate decision

Aspect ratio determines frame shape; encoder settings determine how the video is delivered. YouTube’s encoder guidance asks creators to specify resolution, frame rate, and bitrate, and says YouTube detects settings and transcodes output formats. Choose resolution and bitrate your encoder and internet connection can sustain, then test before the event and monitor stream health.

  • Use progressive scan and square pixels, as YouTube recommends.
  • YouTube lists encoder frame rates up to 60 fps.
  • Set a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Test with motion and audio similar to the actual stream, rather than relying only on a static preview.

Do not add black bars or padding just to force portrait footage into a 16:9 canvas. YouTube advises against baked-in bars because they can interfere with the player’s dynamic sizing. Its 16:9 recommendation on the 360-degree live page applies to 360-degree content; it is not a universal requirement for every live stream.

Common problems and fixes

  • The vertical preview cuts off a person, title, or overlay: The default center crop may exclude content near the horizontal frame’s edges. Adjust zoom and position, choose another layout, or compose a separate vertical view.
  • The picture is landscape despite a lower resolution: Resolution changes pixel dimensions, not the frame’s width-to-height relationship. Use a vertical composition or a vertical layout.
  • The external encoder sends the wrong image to one output: Check that the horizontal and vertical formats are paired with their matching stream keys.
  • You cannot add the vertical output after going live: The vertical format must be set up before the stream starts. Stop and configure the dual-format workflow for a new start if it was omitted.
  • The player shows bars or does not size as expected: Remove bars baked into the video and let YouTube’s player adapt to the source ratio.
  • The stream is unstable: Check stream health, then lower bitrate or resolution to a level the connection and encoder can sustain. Test with representative motion and audio before the event.
