Kiro brings these approaches together: you can explore through conversation, then use specs, project guidance, and automated agent actions to make complex work more structured. Which approach fits depends on the task’s scope, ambiguity, and review needs—not on a universal rule that one is better.
What is the difference between vibe coding and spec-driven development?
“Vibe coding” and “spec coding” are useful labels for workflows, not formal standards or mutually exclusive camps. In a conversational workflow, a developer describes an idea, reviews the generated result, and refines it through further prompts. This is often practical when the change is bounded and the developer can readily tell whether the result is right.

Spec-driven work adds an explicit requirements and planning layer. The developer and agent clarify what the feature must do and how to approach it, then use that shared description to guide implementation. The code can still be produced and refined through conversation; the difference is that the work has a written reference beyond the prompt exchange.
AWS describes Kiro as “an agentic coding service that works alongside you to turn prompts into detailed specs, then into working code, docs, and tests.” That is AWS’s product description, not an independent assessment of the results. AWS also says prompt-and-iterate coding can work well for prototypes, while complex projects may lack clear documentation or an account of why decisions were made. That is a possible risk, not a claim that every conversational workflow has those shortcomings.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When should I write a spec before asking AI to code?
Use the lightest workflow that gives you enough control. A quick conversational loop is usually a sensible starting point for small, reversible changes. Write or refine a spec when the work is hard to define, spans several parts of a project, or needs a shared plan that reviewers can inspect.
| Question | Lean toward conversation | Lean toward a spec |
|---|---|---|
| Ambiguity | You can judge the desired result directly and clarify it by trying a small change. | Requirements need discussion before anyone can tell what a correct result is. |
| Scope | The task is a local edit, explanation, or interface exploration. | The feature crosses components, files, or services. |
| Traceability | A short prompt and review are enough context for the work. | Reviewers or teammates need requirements and planned work alongside the code. |
| Iteration cost | It is cheaper to try an idea and adjust it than to agree on a plan first. | Changing direction late would be costly, so agreeing on intent early is worthwhile. |
| Human review | Review and test the localized change before relying on it. | Review the implementation against the requirements and test the affected components. |
This is a practical decision rule, not a measured Kiro benchmark. AWS describes specs as a way to formalize complex features; its Builder Center guide identifies multi-component development, refactoring, onboarding, and high ambiguity as situations where specs may help.

Keep the loop conversational for bounded work
Try a prompt-and-review cycle when you are exploring an interface idea, requesting an explanation, or making a localized change that is easy to inspect and undo. If the result is wrong, the next prompt can narrow the change. Keep the request small enough that you can see what changed and decide whether it meets the need.
Add a spec when coordination or uncertainty grows
Write down requirements and an implementation plan when the feature affects multiple components, when the request leaves important behavior unclear, or when other people need to review and coordinate the work. A spec can give the agent and the team a common reference; it does not eliminate the need to check whether the code actually satisfies it.

How Kiro combines conversation with structure
Kiro’s documented features are intended to support both prompt-led interaction and more explicit planning. AWS positions the product as an agentic development environment built for spec-driven work. Its overview says Kiro is built on Amazon Bedrock.
Specs formalize complex work
Kiro’s specs provide structured artifacts for formalizing feature development and guiding implementation. They are most relevant when a task needs requirements and a plan that remain visible beyond an individual prompt. They add a layer of structure; they do not guarantee that the plan is complete or that generated code is correct.

Hooks trigger predefined actions
Hooks run predefined agent actions in response to IDE or other specified events. AWS gives examples such as actions on save, create, or delete, and describes uses including checks, documentation, and test generation. A hook can make a repeated action part of a workflow, but the resulting check or artifact still needs appropriate review.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSteering files preserve workspace context
Steering files are Markdown files that provide persistent workspace knowledge, such as project conventions, architecture, and standards. They can give the agent context that would otherwise need to be repeated in prompts. Their usefulness depends on that guidance being relevant and maintained.

Other agent capabilities support the workflow
AWS’s April 30, 2026 announcement also lists custom subagents, powers, terminal integration, inline chat, and MCP support. These capabilities broaden how Kiro can work with a development environment and project tools; they do not by themselves show that a particular workflow is faster or more reliable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Kiro’s features do—and do not—establish
AWS documentation and announcements establish what Kiro offers and how AWS frames its intended workflow. They do not establish that Kiro improves speed, code quality, or cost in every setting, nor do they provide a basis here for comparing its performance with conversational coding or other tools. Product features are not evidence that generated code is production-ready.
Regardless of whether work began with a prompt or a spec, developers still need to review the changes, run suitable tests, and verify that the implementation meets the project’s requirements. A spec can make intent easier to inspect; it cannot substitute for testing the resulting behavior.

AWS’s product overview says content from Kiro Free Tier and individual subscribers may be used for service improvement. It also says enterprise customers have the option of customer-managed keys. These statements depend on account type and the applicable terms; consult AWS’s current Kiro documentation for the details relevant to your account.
Is Kiro only for AWS projects?
The reviewed AWS materials establish that Kiro is built on Amazon Bedrock and describe capabilities including terminal integration and MCP support. They do not establish a complete list of supported providers, environments, or integrations, so they are not enough to determine whether a particular non-AWS project or toolchain is supported. Check current Kiro documentation for compatibility with your setup rather than inferring it from the product’s Bedrock foundation.
