Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Compare quotes for the same service address, then weigh price after promotions, data policy, speed caveats, equipment costs, and contract terms.
Compare plans offered at your address first
Both providers make availability and plan offers dependent on location. Start by entering the same service address on each provider’s site; otherwise, you may be comparing offers that are not actually available to your home. Their public plan descriptions establish provider terms, not independent performance results or a head-to-head test.

When comparing quotes, use the exact plan names and order terms shown for your address. A headline price or advertised maximum speed alone does not tell you what the service will cost or how it will perform at your home.

Neither provider’s “unlimited” wording means that every byte receives the same network priority. Check the plan’s allowance and what happens when it is used.

- ⚠️ CABLE INTERNET ONLY - NOT COMPATIBLE WITH: Fiber (Verizon FiOS, AT&T), DSL, Satellite, or Fixed Wireless. ONLY works with cable providers like Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox. Verify your internet type BEFORE purchase.
- 🚫 NO WiFi INCLUDED - ROUTER REQUIRED: This is a modem ONLY. You MUST buy a separate WiFi router to get wireless internet. Without a router, only ONE device can connect via Ethernet cable. This does NOT replace your current WiFi router.
- 🔌 CABLE INTERNET REQUIRED: Works EXCLUSIVELY with cable internet service (DOCSIS) from providers like Xfinity, Spectrum, or Cox. Will NOT work with fiber (Verizon FiOS, AT&T), DSL, satellite, or fixed wireless internet. Contact your ISP to confirm compatibility BEFORE purchasing.
- 🚀 MULTI-GIG PERFORMANCE: Supports internet plans up to 2.5 Gbps with 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port. Designed for plans 1 Gbps and faster from certified providers: Xfinity (up to 2.33 Gbps), Spectrum (1 Gbps), Cox (2 Gbps). Verify your plan speed and provider compatibility.
- 💡 SETUP REQUIREMENTS: You need: (1) Cable internet service, (2) Separate WiFi router with 2.5 Gbps port for full speeds, (3) ISP activation. This modem cannot create WiFi networks or connect multiple devices without additional equipment.
Viasat: Essentials and Unleashed
Viasat’s plans page describes Essentials as including 150 GB of High-Speed Data, followed by unlimited Standard Data. Standard Data may be deprioritized during network congestion. The page describes Unleashed as having unlimited High-Speed Data, but Viasat also applies a congestion-related typical-usage priority policy. “Unlimited” therefore does not guarantee that performance remains unchanged at busy times. See Viasat’s current plans and terms.
Hughesnet: Priority Data and Standard Data
Hughesnet says each service plan includes a plan-specific amount of Priority Data, with unlimited Standard Data afterward. The provider says Standard Data may be slower during high-traffic periods. Its plan page explains that Standard Data starts automatically after Priority Data is used; check the current terms for the amount included in the specific offer. See Hughesnet’s plans and plan-finder information.
For a household that regularly uses a lot of data, compare the monthly priority allowance and congestion policy—not just whether the plan says “unlimited.” For lighter use, Essentials may be worth considering if it is available and its allowance suits the household. Viasat positions Unleashed for heavier use, but its congestion-related priority terms still matter.

Compare the real price, not just the introductory rate
Viasat’s public plans page displayed an Essentials promotion of $39.99 per month for the first three months, then $69.99 per month, when accessed on October 7, 2026. Conditions apply and the offer can change; it is not a guaranteed price for every address or a promise that the promotion remains available.
Hughesnet’s consumer page uses an address lookup to show locally available plans and offers. Equipment charges may be extra. Before choosing, compare the quoted monthly bill after any introductory period and ask what other charges apply.
- Monthly price after the promotion ends
- Modem or other equipment lease or purchase charges
- Installation charges or conditions
- Optional add-ons, taxes, and surcharges shown in the order
Use each provider’s current address-specific offer page—Viasat plans and Hughesnet plans—rather than relying on an old advertised price.

Speed claims are not household guarantees
Hughesnet advertises Elite at speeds of up to 100 Mbps. The provider says actual speeds may vary, uninterrupted use is not guaranteed, and the advertised maximum is not a promise of the speed available at a particular home. Viasat’s plan and location also affect the service offered; do not treat a general marketing comparison as an address-specific speed estimate. Ask each provider what plan and expected performance apply to your address. Hughesnet’s home plans page gives its speed qualifications.

Consider Fusion separately
Hughesnet describes Fusion as combining satellite and wireless technologies and markets it as a lower-latency option. That description does not establish latency at your home or guarantee that a particular activity will work well. If latency matters for video calls, gaming, or a VPN, ask whether Fusion is offered at your address and what performance terms apply; do not assume the marketing description guarantees suitability.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check contract, equipment, and installation terms
Contract terms vary by plan. Viasat describes Unleashed as month-to-month with no annual contract, while other plan choices may carry a 24-month minimum service term. Hughesnet says a minimum term is required and early termination fees apply. Confirm the exact commitment and cancellation terms in the offer before ordering.

Viasat describes professional installation and built-in Wi-Fi. Hughesnet describes provider-supplied or installed modem and dish equipment, with lease or purchase costs potentially extra, and professional installation. The actual equipment and charges depend on the offer. Check the provider’s installation information and the order details rather than assuming equipment or setup is included.
Choose based on the household’s needs
- Prioritize the lowest ongoing cost: Compare each address-specific quote after the promotion, including equipment and other listed charges.
- Expect substantial data use: Compare Viasat’s Essentials allowance or Unleashed priority terms with Hughesnet’s plan-specific Priority Data and Standard Data policy.
- Need a short commitment: Verify whether Viasat Unleashed is offered; Viasat describes it as month-to-month. Compare that with Hughesnet’s required minimum term and fees.
- Need lower latency: Ask whether Hughesnet Fusion is offered at your location and what to expect. Its lower-latency positioning is not an address-specific guarantee.
If the issue is weak Wi-Fi in one room rather than the internet service itself, treat that as a separate in-home coverage problem. Hughesnet offers an optional Mesh Wi-Fi Node that pairs with its modem; its installation guidance also discusses a booster for weak signal. A mesh node or extender can improve Wi-Fi coverage inside the home, but it does not add satellite capacity or change data-priority terms. Confirm compatibility before buying any third-party device. See Hughesnet’s Mesh Wi-Fi information.
