For short-form video meant to be watched on an upright phone, start with vertical framing. Choose horizontal when the scene needs width—such as a group, landscape, or side-by-side demonstration—or when viewers are likely to watch in a landscape player. The right choice depends on the composition and where the video will appear, not on a universal rule that one orientation performs better.
Choose by destination and what needs to fit in the frame
- Choose vertical (portrait) for a single person or tall subject and portrait-first viewing on an upright phone.
- Choose horizontal (landscape) when width matters, several subjects or details must appear together, or the likely viewing setup is widescreen.
- If you need both formats, plan for both. Record or compose separate versions when possible; a portrait crop from a horizontal original can cut off important detail at the edges.
Before recording, consider the final viewing context and check that the subject and essential text will remain visible if a platform crops or overlays the frame.

Ordinary mobile playback
YouTube Help says the YouTube app for Android “automatically adapts the player to the size of the video.” Its mobile player supports vertical, square, and horizontal video dimensions, so horizontal is not required for every phone video. See YouTube’s Android player help.

YouTube ads
Ad presentation is a separate case from ordinary playback. Google says a 9:16 vertical ad appears larger than a horizontal ad in the initial portrait-held mobile experience, and can fill the screen when a viewer selects fullscreen while holding the device vertically. Placements, overlays, and rotation can change what is visible. For its video and app campaigns, Google recommends 16:9 horizontal, 9:16 vertical, and 1:1 square assets; other ratios between those are allowed. See Google Ads’ video asset guidance.
Does vertical video get more views?
There is no established universal engagement advantage for vertical video across platforms, subjects, and audiences. Google’s advertiser guidance reports results from its own global 2024 campaign data: adding vertical video to Demand Gen campaigns led to more than 35% more conversions on Shorts; in video view campaigns it increased Shorts view-through rate by over 40%; and in video reach campaigns it increased Shorts viewability by over 45% and average watch time by 20%. These are Google-reported advertising results in specific campaign contexts, not a controlled cross-platform comparison or a forecast for an individual creator. A 2024 study by Caroline Violot, Tuğrulcan Elmas, Igor Bilogrevic, and Mathias Humbert analyzed 70,000 channels, 9.9 million Shorts, and 6.9 million regular YouTube videos uploaded between January 2021 and December 2022. Shorts generally had more views and likes per view, but fewer comments per view; results varied by category, and education and political content did not show the same Shorts advantage. A practical recording checklist
- Pick the destination. Decide whether the main use is portrait-first short-form viewing, widescreen playback, or both.
- Check the scene. Use portrait for a tall or centered subject; use landscape if the shot needs width to include people, setting, or multiple details.
- Protect important content. Keep faces, action, and text away from edges where a crop or interface overlay could obscure them.
- Make separate compositions if both matter. Reframe for each orientation rather than assuming one crop will preserve every important detail.
- Compare performance carefully. Treat campaign results as specific to their platform and advertising context; do not infer that one orientation guarantees more organic views.
