Verizon typically controls certain messaging behaviors through account provisioning and app roles. When you switch from Verizon Message+ to Google Messages, Verizon may restrict how the Verizon app registers, how RCS credentials are handled, or which app is allowed to act as the active messaging client.

In practice, people report symptoms like:
- RCS doesn’t turn on in Google Messages after switching.
- Messages appear to send but never arrive or arrive as plain SMS without expected RCS features.
- Message+ prompts repeatedly or notifications suggest it must be used for certain functions.
- Confusion about whether Verizon is “blocking Message+” or “blocking Google Messages RCS” on the same line.
Why this happens (and what you can still use)
Google Messages supports both SMS/MMS and RCS. Verizon can provision capabilities (especially RCS) so that the device can register with the right backend. When your setup changes—new app, cleared data, different default messaging app, VPN/DNS filters, or a SIM refresh—the registration can fail.
The key point: even when RCS is blocked or fails, SMS/MMS often still works. Your goal is to confirm what’s working, then re-enable RCS in Google Messages.
Prerequisites before you switch
Before you change anything, confirm your baseline so you can tell what fixed the problem.

Method A: Switch to Google Messages while keeping SMS/MMS working
This method ensures the basics work first, so you can troubleshoot RCS without guessing.
- Set Google Messages as default: Open Settings > Apps > Default apps > SMS app (or Messaging app) > select Google Messages.
- Verify SMS is enabled: In Google Messages > tap your profile icon (top-right) > Messages settings > ensure Send as SMS or SMS fallback options are present (wording varies by Android version).
- Confirm your SIM line is active: If you recently changed devices, wait for activation to complete. Try sending a plain SMS to another phone from the contact you tested earlier.
- Reboot once: After changing default apps, restart the phone to clear old messaging bindings.
After this, test two things: (1) a plain SMS delivery and (2) whether the conversation shows an RCS indicator (like “Chat features” enabled). If SMS works but RCS doesn’t, go to Method B.
Method B: Set up RCS in Google Messages on Verizon
RCS registration is where Verizon provisioning and Google Messages settings collide most often.
- Open Google Messages: Go to Settings > Chat features.
- Enable Chat features: Toggle Enable chat features.
- Check Wi‑Fi vs mobile data: If RCS fails on Wi‑Fi, try mobile data (and vice versa). Some networks can block required endpoints.
- Turn off Private DNS/VPN: In Android: Settings > Network & Internet > Private DNS set to Off. Disable VPN apps if any are installed.
- Confirm Wi‑Fi Assist isn’t breaking connectivity: If you have a “data saver” or “background restrictions,” disable them temporarily for Google Messages.
- Wait for activation: After enabling chat features, wait 2–10 minutes. If it gets stuck, don’t keep toggling every few seconds—go to troubleshooting.
If you see an error like “Chat features can’t be enabled” or it stays on “Connecting,” it’s almost always a registration/config issue. Use the troubleshooting section below to pinpoint which one.

Method C: Verify provisioning and stop Verizon app interference
Even though you’re using Google Messages, Verizon’s apps can still affect registration state via background restrictions, permissions, or how the carrier expects the line to behave.
- Unrestrict permissions for Google Messages: Settings > Apps > Google Messages > Permissions. Ensure permissions required for SMS notifications and storage (varies by OS) are allowed.
- Remove background limits: In the same App info screen, disable Battery optimization for Google Messages if it’s set to restricted.
- Disable Message+ from being active (not uninstall): For Verizon Message+ open App info and set it to Don’t allow notifications temporarily while you test RCS. This reduces confusion during troubleshooting.
- Reset both apps carefully (only if needed): If RCS is stuck, you may need to clear cache/data for Google Messages (and sometimes Message+). Do this only after verifying SMS works, and be prepared to sign in again if prompted.
Clearing data is disruptive, but it often forces a clean RCS registration attempt when Verizon’s prior state is cached or inconsistent.
Troubleshooting when RCS fails or texts don’t deliver
Use this as a decision tree: confirm SMS first, then focus on the specific RCS failure mode.
1) SMS works, RCS won’t enable
- Check Wi‑Fi/Private DNS: Turn off Private DNS and any VPN. Retry in Google Messages > Chat features.
- Switch networks: Try mobile data if you were on Wi‑Fi (or vice versa).
- Restart after toggles: If you changed default SMS app or permissions, reboot once before reattempting RCS.
- Clear cache for Google Messages: Settings > Apps > Google Messages > Storage > Clear cache. Retry RCS.
- If still stuck, clear data: Storage > Clear storage (this resets the app). Then open Google Messages and re-enable Chat features.
2) Messages send as SMS but fail to deliver
- Verify the number format: Ensure you’re connected to the correct Verizon line and that your phone number hasn’t changed during device migration.
- Test with a different contact: Try sending to a second number. If only one recipient fails, it may be their phone/line.
- Check SIM provisioning status: If you recently swapped SIM/eSIM, allow time for activation. Some lines appear “online” but don’t fully provision messaging yet.
- Update carrier services: Ensure Google Play services and the carrier services components are current.
3) RCS shows enabled but bubbles still behave like SMS
- Confirm chat features per conversation: In Google Messages, open a chat and check for the “chat” indicator (it varies by UI). If the icon isn’t there, it’s still not fully registered.
- Re-register: Turn off Chat features, wait 30 seconds, turn it back on, then restart the phone once.
- Remove blocking apps: Disable call/SMS filtering or “blocker” apps that may intercept data connections.
4) Verizon Message+ keeps overriding or prompting you
- Confirm default SMS app remains Google Messages. Verizon apps sometimes try to regain the default after updates or line changes.
- Disable Message+ notifications while testing: Don’t uninstall immediately—keep it available so you can compare behavior if something breaks.
- After 24 hours, reassess: If your line was recently moved or provisioned, temporary prompts can clear once Verizon finishes backend syncing.
Common mistakes that cause the Verizon Message+ block symptoms
- Changing default SMS app but leaving old background restrictions on: Google Messages may be restricted from the network or notifications.
- Using a Private DNS provider that blocks Google messaging endpoints: This can prevent RCS handshake while SMS still works.
- Frequent toggling of Chat features: Too many toggles can put the registration state into a retry loop.
- Uninstalling Message+ before confirming RCS: You lose a comparison baseline and the ability to quickly revert.
- Assuming RCS and SMS failure are the same: They’re different systems. Fix SMS first, then RCS.
Comparison: Google Messages vs Verizon Message+
Both apps can support texting, but the “blocked” feeling usually comes from RCS registration expectations.

| Feature | Google Messages | Verizon Message+ |
|---|---|---|
| SMS/MMS | Supported on Verizon lines as long as SMS provisioning is correct | Supported; may prompt you to be the active client |
| RCS (“Chat features”) | Controlled by Google’s RCS registration; depends on provisioning and connectivity | May use Verizon-aligned services or behave differently depending on line and device |
| Cross-device features | Can use Google’s ecosystem features depending on setup | Can include Verizon-specific experiences |
| Carrier prompts when switching | RCS may fail if registration expectations aren’t met | Often stays as the “preferred” experience for Verizon branding |
When you should escalate to Verizon support
If SMS works but RCS never enables after you’ve followed the connectivity + cache/data steps, it may be provisioning at the account level.
Escalate when you can truthfully report:
- Chat features in Google Messages can’t be enabled after cache/data resets and network changes.
- You see repeated prompts or errors tied to Verizon’s provisioning state.
- This problem began after a device change, SIM change, or recent account migration.
When you call, ask them to check RCS/service provisioning for your line and whether your number is in a state that blocks Google Messages RCS registration. Provide your device model and Android version.
FAQs
Will I lose SMS if Verizon blocks Message+ when I use Google Messages?
Usually, no. Verizon’s “blocking” reports typically affect RCS behavior or app registration, while SMS/MMS continues to work if your SMS provisioning is correct.
Does uninstalling Verizon Message+ fix RCS in Google Messages?
Not reliably. Uninstalling can remove variables during testing, but it can also remove a rollback option. Keep Message+ installed until Google Messages chat features are stable.

Can I use Google Messages on Verizon without enabling chat features?
Yes. Google Messages will still send SMS/MMS. You’ll just get plain-text behavior where both sides don’t support chat.
How long does it take for RCS to activate after switching apps?
Often it’s within minutes, but after a device/SIM change it can take longer—sometimes up to 24 hours—because the carrier backend may need to finish syncing.
What if Google Messages RCS works on one network but not another?
That points to DNS/proxy/private network filtering. Disable Private DNS and VPN, and try both Wi‑Fi and mobile data to confirm.

Bottom Line
Verizon’s Message+ “block” reports usually boil down to RCS registration and default messaging/app provisioning—not a total loss of texting. Get SMS/MMS working first, then re-enable Chat features in Google Messages after fixing connectivity constraints like Private DNS and background restrictions.
If RCS still won’t enable after cache/data resets and network changes, it’s a strong sign your line needs carrier-side provisioning attention—have Verizon verify RCS-related account status for your number.
