You can’t delete a completed Venmo transaction using the controls described in Venmo’s current Help Center guidance. You can make a payment more private or hide past transactions from your view, but neither action deletes the payment record or removes it from the other participant’s history.
What you can do instead of deleting a payment
Venmo documents two visibility controls: changing an individual payment’s privacy and hiding past transactions from your view. These are not deletion or reversal tools. Venmo’s instructions for changing payment privacy and hiding past payments say you can adjust a payment’s privacy after it has been sent.

Make a past payment more private
- Open the payment in Venmo.
- Tap its current privacy setting.
- Choose a more private audience. Venmo says a past payment can only be made more private than it was originally.
Hide past transactions from your view
Open Me > Settings > Privacy and look for the option to hide all past transactions. This hides past activity from your view; it does not erase the underlying record. Venmo’s interface may change, so check the current Privacy menu if the labels differ.
Change the default for future payments
Go to Me > Settings > Privacy and choose Public, Friends, or Private. This setting controls the audience for future payments; it does not delete past ones.

Who can still see a private payment?
Private does not mean invisible to everyone. Venmo says a private transaction is not shared beyond the personal transaction feeds and the other participant. The people involved in the payment can still see its amount, note, sender and recipient names, and timestamp. Venmo’s privacy explanation also distinguishes Public transactions, which may be visible to anyone on the internet, from Friends transactions, shared with Venmo friends of the parties.
If you sent money to the wrong person or see an unauthorized payment
Wrong recipient or other payment problem
Do not assume that making a payment private or hiding it will get the money back. The reviewed Venmo guidance does not promise that support can erase a completed transaction. Contact Venmo through its current support options for help with the payment.

Unauthorized activity
Venmo advises contacting support as soon as possible. Have the transaction date, amount, and username of the person paid ready. Its stated in-app route is Me > Settings > Get Help > Chat With Us. See Venmo’s guidance on reporting unauthorized activity.

Venmo’s reviewed help pages do not establish a general cancellation rule for ordinary pending payments. Open the transaction details and follow the instructions shown there, or contact support; do not assume every pending payment can be canceled. A separate Venmo page about payments through Meta Messenger covers that distinct payment flow, so its cancellation rules should not be applied to ordinary Venmo payments. Closing your account or requesting data is not a deletion shortcut
Closing a Venmo account does not establish that old transaction records are erased. Venmo says pending transactions must be completed and remaining money moved before closure; after closure, it sends a final transaction-history message. Read Venmo’s account-closure instructions before closing an account.
You can request a copy of your account data through Venmo.com settings, but a data request is not a request to erase a payment. Venmo says reports usually arrive in 1–2 calendar days and may take up to 30 days. See Venmo’s data-download instructions.
