firstQuartile can appear under <NonLinearAds> in IAB Tech Lab CTV signaling proposal examples, but that does not guarantee a CTV player will schedule or fire it. Treat markup acceptance, meaningful event timing, and runtime delivery as three separate questions—and test them against the exact player and final VAST response you deploy.
What does a valid firstQuartile declaration tell you?
A VAST tracking declaration such as <Tracking event="firstQuartile"> identifies an event and its tracking URL. Whether it is accepted depends on the applicable VAST version, schema, extensions, and validator. Even if the declaration validates, that only establishes that the markup is acceptable to that check; it does not establish that a player will schedule the event or send the tracking request.

The IAB Tech Lab’s May 2026 CTV Ad Format Signaling Proposal includes examples that declare firstQuartile, midpoint, thirdQuartile, and complete under <NonLinearAds>. This is evidence that quartile declarations appear in official proposal material, not a guarantee of support in every deployed implementation.
Can a nonlinear creative have meaningful quartile timing?
Quartiles are time-based events. For them to represent progress through an ad experience, the player needs a meaningful duration or timeline to use. The IAB’s CTV Ad Portfolio for VAST 2.0 says Duration should be included whenever the nonlinear experience’s duration is known. It also requires Duration for video and interactive CTV Ad Portfolio creatives when quartile or other time-based tracking is expected.

A static-image unit may not have a known duration when the VAST response is generated. The portfolio guidance allows Duration to be omitted in that case and describes other measurement events supported by the integration. Do not assume every nonlinear image has a conventional video playhead or that video quartiles automatically measure how long an overlay remains visible.
The portfolio extension distinguishes standard NonLinear tracking from CTV-specific tracking events. It is intended to signal format, creative, and tracking information; the applicable structure and event choice depend on the creative and integration. The IAB’s current Signaling Implementation Guidelines for Digital Video and CTV Ad Formats also address CTV nonlinear creative structure, including SIMID placement.

Why might a tag validate while a tracking event is absent?
Validation and runtime behavior are different layers. A validator can accept the XML and event vocabulary, while a player may still lack the timing basis, support, or implementation behavior needed to schedule the event. A creative can render and an impression can be recorded without proving that quartile or duration-related tracking is working.

A 2026 article by Aleksander Sekowski describes a squeezeback debugging case in which impressions and the rendered creative were present, but completion and time-on-screen reporting were absent. That is the author’s reported experience, not an independently established pattern across CTV players. It should not be generalized into a rule that portfolio players never schedule firstQuartile.

How to investigate a missing quartile event
- Confirm the format and version. Identify the VAST version and any CTV portfolio extension or other signaling guidance the integration expects. Check the relevant format structure against the IAB guidance rather than relying on event-name acceptance alone.
- Inspect the final resolved response. Review the VAST after wrappers have been resolved, and verify that the tracking declaration and event URL are still present in the response delivered to the player.
- Check whether Duration is meaningful and present. For a time-based quartile, confirm that the creative type has a usable timeline and that the response supplies Duration when required by the applicable portfolio guidance.
- Verify the expected measurement. Decide whether you need to measure progress through a timed creative or how long a nonlinear overlay is visible. Those are not necessarily the same event or measurement.
- Test on the target runtime. Use the exact player or platform in scope, then inspect its playback and event logs to determine whether the event was scheduled and whether the tracking request was emitted. Standards examples cannot answer this for an unidentified player.
What can you conclude across CTV players?
The available IAB materials establish that quartile declarations under <NonLinearAds> appear in a CTV signaling proposal and that duration matters when time-based tracking is expected. They do not establish a universal scheduling rule or compatibility matrix across CTV players. For a deployment decision, distinguish the declaration’s acceptance from observed event delivery on the named platform.
