What wire gauge should you use for a vape coil?
If you need a starting reference, Vaporesso’s coil-building guide names 26–28 gauge Kanthal as a common recommendation and also discusses Nichrome and stainless steel. That is one manufacturer’s guidance, not a universal prescription. Confirm that your atomizer and device support the material and build you intend to use, and follow their documentation.

Gauge describes wire thickness, but thickness alone does not determine a finished coil’s resistance or suitability. Alloy, wire length, coil geometry, and target resistance matter too. A gauge that suits one build may not suit another.

What determines the right gauge?
Wire material
Kanthal, Nichrome, and stainless steel have different electrical properties. The Kanthal handbook, for example, lists resistance per meter by diameter for Nikrothal 80, a named alloy. Those figures are specific to that material; they should not be treated as exact values for other alloys or as the resistance of a finished vape coil.

Diameter, length, and coil geometry
The selected wire diameter works together with the wire length and coil shape to determine the build. Consequently, choosing a gauge without accounting for the coil’s geometry and target resistance leaves out important information. The available sources do not establish that a thicker or thinner gauge is categorically better.
Device mode and compatibility
Material choice must match the mode supported by the device. Vaporesso’s guide discusses temperature-control use alongside wire options, but compatibility varies by device. Check the device manual for supported materials and modes rather than assuming a wire will work in every setting.

How to choose without treating gauge as a safety rating
- Check the device and atomizer documentation. Identify supported wire materials, operating modes, and any stated limits before selecting a build.
- Choose a material supported by the intended mode. Do not assume that Kanthal, Nichrome, or stainless steel are interchangeable in every device or mode.
- Plan the full coil, not just the gauge. Account for wire diameter, length, coil geometry, and the target resistance together.
- Verify the complete build against the hardware and battery specifications. A gauge recommendation alone cannot establish that a build is compatible or safe.
Vaporesso warns that a battery unable to support the device’s power can fail dangerously. Because no specific device or battery is identified here, no particular build can be declared safe. Use the specifications and safety guidance for your own equipment.

A peer-reviewed study reports experimental 36-gauge coils made from Kanthal A-1, Nichrome 80, and stainless steel 317L. The coils were reported as 4.2 Ω, with wire lengths of 36.7, 48.8, and 65.7 mm, respectively. Those are apparatus details from that study, not a recommended everyday gauge or evidence that the same build suits a consumer device.

Sources and what they establish
- Vaporesso’s coil-building guide provides a manufacturer-specific 26–28 gauge Kanthal starting reference, names Nichrome and stainless steel as alternatives, and discusses device mode and safety. Its exact publication date is not established.
- Kanthal’s handbook includes resistance-per-meter data for Nikrothal 80 by wire diameter. The figures apply to that alloy; the handbook’s publication date is not established here.
- The peer-reviewed study reports the experimental coils described above. Its setup does not establish an ideal consumer gauge.
