In Vampire Crawlers, a dependable beginner build starts with a usable ascending-mana card chain, reliable low-cost damage, and enough defense to survive while that chain develops. Treat Curse as an optional difficulty setting: enemies get stronger, and you gain more experience. It is a trade, not a free bonus.
How combat and card combos work
Vampire Crawlers is a turn-based, card-driven roguelite deckbuilder. In its TurboTurn system, you can queue actions at your own pace and have them resolve without the usual pauses between moves. The key sequencing rule is to play cards in ascending mana cost: each step multiplies the next card’s effect. Wild cards can extend a sequence. The official Steam page describes this combo rule; poncle’s launch announcement also calls out TurboTurn, dungeon points of interest, character cards, summoned survivors, card progression, and weapon evolutions.

Think of a hand as a chain to assemble, not just a set of individually powerful cards. Before spending a card, consider whether its cost fits the ascending order you can still play. A card that extends a useful sequence may be more valuable than a stronger card that breaks it.

Build a reliable early deck
Early on, consistency matters more than collecting several high-impact finishers. Your deck needs to produce useful turns while it is still developing, and you need to survive long enough to assemble a stronger chain.
#1 Best Overall
- Keep dependable low-cost damage. It gives you practical plays while your hand and combo options are limited.
- Add defense before relying on long chains. Armor can help you stay alive while setting up a sequence.
- Be cautious with duplicate finishers. Multiple finishers can crowd out useful plays if your draw support is not yet strong enough to reach them consistently.
These are flexible priorities, not a fixed tier list. What is reliable depends on the cards offered and how they fit your character and the rest of the run.
Compare cards by what they do for the build
When choosing between a new card and your current plan, judge its contribution to the whole turn and run—not only its standalone effect.
| Check | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Mana curve | Does this card preserve a useful ascending-cost sequence, or is it likely to interrupt one? |
| Consistency | Does it help you draw or reliably play the cards your plan needs? |
| Survival | Do you have defensive support before committing to a longer combo? |
| Synergy | Does it fit your character, color, or other effects in the current build? |
| Payoff | Does it help evolve a weapon or fill a clear finisher role? |
Mana and card draw limit what you can accomplish in a turn. A card is less useful when it repeatedly sits unused, even if its effect looks strong on its own. Draw support can make a planned chain more consistent, while weapon evolutions can meaningfully shape a build; weigh both against what the current run actually offers. The Epic Games Store strategy guide also recommends considering a range of mana costs, draw support, and weapon evolutions.

Curse makes enemies stronger in exchange for more experience, according to VGC’s game-stat guide. The extra experience comes with more dangerous encounters, so Curse is difficulty scaling as well as a progression tradeoff.

Use it when your current build can cope with stronger enemies. If you are learning a character or route, or your deck is not yet holding together, reducing the risk is a reasonable choice. VGC’s build guide frames Curse as an optional challenge for players with enough permanent upgrades; treat that as a practical starting point, not a universal requirement.
