What is Valve Lepton?
Valve describes Lepton as a compatibility layer that allows Android games to run on Linux. Its Steamworks documentation says Lepton is implemented as a container intended to minimize overhead. Lepton and Proton serve a similar broad purpose but start with different game builds. Proton is Valve’s compatibility layer for Windows games on Linux; Valve describes it as using a modified version of Wine and graphics implementations including DXVK. Lepton targets Android games. On Steam Frame, the Windows route also uses FEX to translate x86 code for the device’s Arm64 hardware.

Steam Frame is described by Valve as running SteamOS, based on Arch Linux, on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Arm64 chip. FEX translates x86 code to Arm64 and forwards graphics API calls to native host libraries such as OpenGL or Vulkan. Those different source platforms and hardware considerations explain why Valve presents separate paths rather than one compatibility layer for every game. The Valve GDC 2026 hardware presentation diagrams Windows x86 through Proton/FEX and Android through Lepton, both leading to SteamOS on Arm.
Why start with Android games?
Valve frames Lepton as an alternate path for VR developers who have already made a mobile-optimized version of a game. In that situation, an Android build—typically Android Arm64 in Valve’s example—may make more sense than adapting or relying on a Windows x86 build. Valve says most developers will likely use the Windows route through Proton and FEX; it does not provide adoption figures or a count of games using either path.

This is the grounded meaning of “starting smaller”: Valve describes a narrower intended developer use case for Lepton, not a measured limitation in the number of compatible games. The available documentation does not establish comparative performance, compatibility rates, or whether particular Android titles work.
What Steam Frame owners and developers can conclude
For players
Lepton is the Android-game compatibility route Valve documents for Steam Frame. The documentation does not name tested Android games or provide a title-by-title compatibility list, so it cannot answer whether a particular game will run. Nor does it establish support for apps that depend on specific Android services.

For developers
If a VR game already has a mobile-optimized Android build, Valve identifies that build as a possible fit for the Lepton path. Otherwise, Valve’s guidance is that most developers are likely to use a Windows x86 build with Proton and FEX. The materials explain the intended architecture, but do not provide performance benchmarks to decide between the paths.

Those details are not supplied by Valve’s compatibility overview or GDC 2026 presentation. Lepton is a documented compatibility approach for Steam Frame, but the materials do not amount to an exhaustive compatibility database or a comparative test.
