If VALORANT opens to a black screen, restart your PC first. Riot’s black-screen notice was tied to patch 10.05 and recommends restarting, then cleanly reinstalling the graphics driver if the restart does not help. That advice is specific to that patch; it does not establish one cause or fix for every black screen. Try the steps below in order, starting with actions that are quick and reversible.
Why VALORANT may open to a black screen
A black screen is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Riot’s launch-crash guidance identifies several possible contributors to launch problems, including outdated or corrupted files, graphics-driver problems, and background software interference. Without an error code, logs, or details about your PC, the screen alone cannot show which one is responsible.

Riot’s specific notice concerns VALORANT failing to launch or opening to a black screen after patch 10.05. For that situation, Riot recommends restarting the PC first and then trying a clean graphics-driver reinstall if needed. Treat the remaining suggestions here as general Windows or game-launch troubleshooting, not confirmed fixes for every black-screen case.
Try these fixes in order
1. Restart Windows
Choose Start > Power > Restart, rather than shutting down and immediately turning the PC back on. Once Windows is running, open Riot Client and launch VALORANT again. Restarting is Riot’s first recommendation in its patch 10.05 black-screen notice.

2. Reset the display driver if the whole screen is blank
If Windows itself is showing a blank screen—not just the VALORANT window—press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B. Microsoft describes this shortcut as resetting the graphics driver. The display may flicker or beep. If your desktop is visible and only the game is black, this general Windows recovery step may not address the game problem.
3. Update or cleanly reinstall the graphics driver
Riot’s patch-specific notice recommends a clean graphics-driver reinstall if restarting does not help. Riot’s broader crash guidance also includes updating graphics drivers. Get the driver from your GPU manufacturer’s official support channel; the available guidance does not require a third-party driver-cleaner utility.

If you are unsure how to perform a clean reinstall for your particular GPU, follow the manufacturer’s instructions rather than removing driver components at random. Restart Windows after the driver change, then test VALORANT.

5. Use a clean boot to check for background interference
Riot recommends a clean boot as a way to check whether background processes are interfering with the game. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure for your version of Windows, then try launching VALORANT. If the game behaves differently, re-enable services selectively to identify a possible conflict. Do not leave necessary security services disabled as a permanent workaround.
6. Reset graphics software settings to defaults
Riot notes that graphics software settings can override game settings and recommends resetting them to defaults as a general crash-stability step. Use the reset option in the control panel or software for your GPU. This may not be practical when VALORANT cannot reach its settings screen, and Riot’s guidance does not identify it as a guaranteed startup black-screen fix.

7. Check firewall or third-party antivirus interference
Riot’s launch-crash guidance includes checking firewall rules and whether third-party antivirus software is interfering. Use Riot’s official exception instructions if an exception is appropriate. If you temporarily test whether antivirus interference is involved, restore protection promptly; do not leave antivirus disabled or broadly weaken firewall protection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors8. Reinstall VALORANT and Vanguard as a later step
Riot lists reinstalling VALORANT and Vanguard among later launch-crash troubleshooting options. Try this only after the simpler checks above, since reinstalling takes more time and does not guarantee a fix. Use Riot Client’s available uninstall and reinstall process, and follow Riot’s current instructions for Vanguard rather than deleting unrelated files.

9. Lower video settings if you can reach them
If VALORANT eventually opens and you can access its settings, lower the video or graphics settings and test again. Riot includes reducing graphics settings in general PC crash guidance. This cannot help while the game remains inaccessible at startup, so treat it as a conditional step for a game that opens before turning black or crashing.
10. Send logs to Riot Player Support
If the black screen continues, submit a ticket to Riot Player Support and include the logs Riot requests. Logs and system-specific details give support a way to investigate; the symptom alone is not enough to establish a cause.

If restarting, graphics-driver troubleshooting, Windows updates, and the relevant launch checks do not resolve the problem, contact Riot rather than relying on unsupported registry edits or leaving security protections off. Describe when the black screen began, whether Windows remains usable, what troubleshooting you tried, and attach the requested logs.
