The phrase is player shorthand, not a confirmed in-game name. If it refers to the plague-mass enemy called Carrion, the fight is primarily a damage-type test: Carrion reportedly resists cutting damage and is vulnerable to fire or another burning effect. Other encounters are harder for different reasons—strict parry timing, unblockable attacks, ranged fire, summons, phase changes, or guard-breaking heavy blows.
The most useful answer is therefore a mechanics comparison, not a universal tier list. Valor Mortis is scheduled for release on October 13, 2026, according to its Steam listing, and several enemy details come from preview or demo material rather than a confirmed retail build.

What “red blobs” means in Valor Mortis
No researched official source identifies an enemy literally named “red blob.” The indexed bestiary does describe Carrion, a plague mass, but it does not say that players officially call Carrion red blobs. Treat the description as a visual nickname until the in-game name is confirmed.

This distinction matters because the correct counter depends on the enemy’s actual type. If the creature is Carrion, the bestiary says cutting damage does not make it react and recommends Fire or another burning effect while you reposition. If your target has a different name or behavior, do not assume that the Carrion counter applies. Check its health response, animation and codex entry first.

That uncertainty also rules out a responsible headline such as “red blobs are the hardest enemy.” Their apparent toughness may simply be the result of bringing a weapon that the target ignores.
How to judge which fights are hardest
Valor Mortis’s combat is built around parries, dashes and visceral finishers. A successful parry advances an enemy’s posture toward a critical or finisher window; blocking consumes endurance and can fail against heavy attackers. Difficulty changes substantially depending on which of the following demands an encounter combines.
| Difficulty axis | What it asks you to do | Typical failure |
|---|---|---|
| Parry and posture | Read attack timing, parry repeatedly and convert a posture break into a finisher. | Attacking too early, missing several parries or spending endurance on ordinary blocks. |
| Red or unblockable cues | Recognize the reported red-light warning and dodge instead of attempting a parry. | Trying to block or parry an attack that should be avoided. |
| Damage type or weak point | Use the weapon or effect that the enemy can actually respond to, then expose a weak point when available. | Using cutting damage against a Carrion-like plague mass and seeing little or no progress. |
| Ranged and crowd pressure | Track several threats, break line of sight and prevent adds from surrounding you. | Focusing on one target while a second enemy fires or attacks from behind. |
| Phase changes | Learn a new rhythm after a transformation or enraged stage. | Repeating first-phase reactions after the boss changes its moveset. |
| Terrain and approach | Use cover, distance and reload windows instead of crossing open ground under fire. | Charging a siege enemy head-on and taking a projectile before reaching it. |
These axes explain why two players can disagree about the “hardest” fight without either being mistaken. A precise parry specialist may find a duel manageable but struggle with a pack, while a player who prefers spacing may find a slow heavy enemy easier than a fast swordsman.
Quick comparison of the hardest encounter types
| Encounter | Main pressure | What makes it difficult | Best first adjustment |
|---|---|---|---|
| First major boss | Early parry and posture demands | The game expects accurate parries before the player has fully learned its timing. GamesRadar’s reviewer called this the most troublesome encounter in that review. | Practice parry timing on ordinary enemies and avoid treating every attack as blockable. |
| General Lothaire | Melee strings, ranged weapons and summoned minions | Several threats compete for attention; reported preview details include shoulder-mounted pistols, a longsword, a flagpole and adds. | Keep the boss and minions in view, dodge reported red-flash attacks and punish posture breaks. |
| Sphinx | Mobility and phase adaptation | The four-legged boss reportedly changes to an erratic enraged stage, invalidating a learned first-phase rhythm. | Save stamina and space for the second stage; do not anchor yourself to one pattern. |
| High Justiciar Aurelius | Fast duel followed by transformation | Low-wind-up sword swings demand reactions, then a plague-infected arm and ground slam introduce a new timing problem. | Relearn the transformed phase instead of relying on first-phase parry cues. |
| Carrion, if this is the “red blob” | Damage-type check and repositioning | The bestiary says cutting damage does not produce the expected reaction; fire or burning is recommended. | Switch to fire before judging the enemy’s raw difficulty. |
| Risen Sapeur and heavy elites | Guard-breaking blows | Heavy attacks can break guard and punch through held defence. | Dodge and create space rather than holding block through the swing. |
| Howler packs and mixed groups | Surround pressure | The group becomes dangerous when you tunnel on one enemy and lose track of the rest. | Separate the pack with area damage or Stasis, then fight from a clean angle. |
Why the first major boss can feel hardest
The first major boss is the strongest candidate for “hardest” only in the sense of learning shock. GamesRadar’s October 12, 2026 review said Valor Mortis demands “precise sword-tennis right from the start,” with even rank-and-file enemies taking multiple parries to break their guard. The reviewer described the first major boss as the most troublesome encounter in that playthrough.

- Solitaire Play
- 22 x34 Map
- 300+ Counters
- Unit Size: 1 Plane
That is an individual review experience, not a win-rate statistic or a universal ranking. Still, it identifies a real design pressure: the game asks you to understand posture and parry conversion before you have accumulated much practical experience. If ordinary enemies are taking several parries, do not waste endurance on repeated blocks. Learn the attack cadence, parry the safest part of the string and use the resulting posture opening for the finisher.
General Lothaire: the layered execution test
General Lothaire is difficult because the encounter reportedly combines several kinds of attention. The secondary boss guide describes a mutated soldier with extra shoulder arms carrying pistols, a longsword and a flagpole, plus summoned minions. Those details come from demo or preview reporting, so the retail version should be checked for changes.
What to watch
- Multiple attack sources: a melee string can demand a parry while a pistol or minion threatens from outside your immediate view.
- Reported red cues: preview coverage describes red-light attacks as attacks intended to be dodged, not parried. This cue is reported rather than publisher-confirmed.
- Posture opportunities: once a parry sequence advances posture to a critical window, take the finisher instead of extending a greedy combo.
How to approach the arena
- Begin by identifying which Lothaire attacks are safely parryable and which carry the reported red warning.
- Keep the boss, summons and your escape route inside the camera view; a successful parry is not useful if an add hits you during recovery.
- When minions create a surround, create distance or remove the most disruptive angle before returning to the boss.
- Use a posture break immediately, then reset your spacing rather than assuming the next exchange follows the same rhythm.
Lothaire is usually harder than a single-target duel for players who lose situational awareness. The problem is execution under interruption, not one secret weakness.
Sphinx: the fight that punishes a solved first phase
The Sphinx is described as a four-legged boss with a golden headpiece and an erratic enraged second stage. Its difficulty comes from a rhythm change: learning stage one does not complete the fight, because stage two requires you to read movement and timing again.
Why mobility matters
A mobile target gives you less time to stand still and wait for a familiar parry window. Preserve room to dash, avoid getting pinned against terrain and watch the boss’s body movement rather than only its headpiece. The key mistake is treating the second phase as a faster version of the first. The description emphasizes less predictable movement, so expect to adapt rather than simply accelerate your old reactions.
High Justiciar Aurelius: two different duels
Aurelius reportedly starts as a human-sized sword duel with fast swings that have little wind-up. That makes visual reaction and disciplined parrying more important than memorizing a long telegraphed animation. After transformation, a plague-infected arm and a ground slam introduce a different move set.
The likely failure mode is carrying first-phase timing into the transformation. Once the ground slam appears, re-evaluate your safe distance and dodge timing. Do not assume that a response that worked against a low-wind-up sword swing also works against an area-impact attack. The fight tests adaptation more than damage type.

If your red blob is Carrion, the first objective is not to rank its damage or health. It is to verify that your build is using the correct damage answer. The bestiary says Carrion does not react to cutting damage and recommends Fire or another burning effect while repositioning.

A practical Carrion check
- Confirm the identity. Compare the creature’s name, appearance and behavior with the in-game codex. Do not rely on the red color alone.
- Test your current weapon briefly. If cutting attacks produce little or no meaningful reaction, stop spending endurance on the same approach.
- Equip fire or a burning effect. The bestiary’s recommendation is Fire or another burning option; the exact availability and balance may differ in the retail release.
- Reposition continuously. The guidance specifically pairs the fire recommendation with repositioning, so do not stand still to trade hits.
- Reassess after the first successful response. If fire creates the expected reaction, the earlier difficulty was likely a damage-type mismatch rather than proof that Carrion is the game’s strongest elite.
This is why the “red blobs versus elites” question has a conditional answer. With the right effect, Carrion may become straightforward; with an unsuitable cutting setup, it can appear inexplicably resistant.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Risen Sapeur and other heavy elites: do not hold block
The bestiary says Risen Sapeur heavy blows can break guard and punch through held defence. That makes the enemy a dodge-and-spacing check. Blocking is not a neutral fallback when the attack is designed to defeat it.
Approach the heavy enemy after its committed swing, not during the wind-up. A short attack, dash away and reset is safer than a long combo that leaves you in front of the next guard-breaking blow. If your timing is uncertain, prioritize survival and observe the attack cycle before attempting a parry.
The same bestiary describes heavy siege or artillery mutants whose reload cycle creates an approach window. Use terrain and move during reload rather than crossing open ground while the weapon is ready. This is an environmental problem as much as a melee one.

Howler packs: why groups outrank individuals
Howlers and Risen Soldiers are described as dangerous when the player focuses on one target and forgets the rest. Their difficulty is positional and compound: the individual may be manageable, but the pack can attack from several angles and punish tunnel vision.
Break the formation
- Use area damage or Stasis to interrupt the group and create separation.
- Fight from a clean angle where you can see the next attacker instead of standing in the middle of the pack.
- Do not chase a nearly defeated enemy into a blind corner if another threat is still active.
- Return to single-target parry and posture play only after the surrounding pressure is controlled.
This is one of the clearest cases where “hardest enemy” is the wrong unit of measurement. The group’s formation is the threat.
Should you parry, dodge, block or use fire?
Choose the response from the enemy’s mechanic, not from a universal preference.

So, what is the hardest fight?
There is no official developer difficulty ranking, win-rate table, complete damage chart or confirmed final boss list in the available material. The most defensible conclusions are conditional:
- Hardest while learning the system: the first major boss, because precise parries are demanded early and even ordinary enemies may require multiple parries to break guard.
- Hardest execution encounter: General Lothaire, if the preview description of summons, melee weapons and ranged fire carries into the retail build.
- Hardest adaptation fight: Sphinx or High Justiciar Aurelius, because each reportedly changes rhythm or moveset after the first stage.
- Hardest matchup mistake: Carrion, if that is the enemy meant by “red blob,” when approached with cutting damage instead of fire.
- Hardest group situation: Howler and Risen Soldier packs, where awareness and positioning matter more than any single enemy’s statistics.
- Hardest defence check: Risen Sapeur and similar heavy elites, because blocking the obvious way can fail.
Those categories are more useful than claiming one universal champion. They tell you what to change when a fight stalls: sharpen parry timing, dodge the red cue, switch damage type, control the crowd or exploit terrain.
What is still unconfirmed
The Games Wiki boss page stated in its September 13, 2026 snapshot that official materials had not published the boss count, final-boss identity, health or phase counts, or whether The Relentless are bosses or elites. Preview descriptions of Lothaire, Sphinx and Aurelius may also change before or after launch.
Valor Mortis is listed for October 13, 2026 on Steam. Release patches can change enemy names, balance, attack cues, boss ordering and storefront information. Recheck the in-game codex and current patch notes when the retail build is available, especially if “red blobs” remains a community nickname rather than an official label.
