You can escape without stopping for optional objectives, but the jail is one-way: after you leave, you cannot return. If you want the Choir quest, your equipment, and its Remnant’s Return reward, collect the journals, keys, and prisoner letter before entering the sewer exit.
The Armoury Key is on a table in the upper-floor kitchen, reached via the rafters. It opens the lower-floor armoury, where your confiscated equipment is stored.

Before leaving the prison
- Chapter 10 is “Shackled,” in the City of Orphans region.
- The jail cannot be revisited once you leave.
- The optional Choir quest becomes permanently missable if you exit before completing its prison steps.
- Death in this area respawns you at the cell. The guide reports no notable prison items beyond consumables and the quest materials listed below, although exact placements and patrols can vary between versions.
Choose your route based on your goal:
| Approach | What you do | Best for | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Escape-only | Follow the main route through the jail and sewer, then leave. | Players who want to advance Chapter 10 quickly. | You permanently lose access to the Choir objectives and the prison’s Armoury Key opportunity. |
| Choir completion | Collect both journal parts, recover the Armoury Key, take the Chapel Key, retrieve the deceased-prisoners letter, and deliver it after the sewer. | Players seeking optional quest rewards and a fuller completion run. | Requires detours and careful exploration before exiting. |
Step-by-step prison escape
1. Find the first warden journal
Follow the linear escape path from your cell. On the left, enter the room containing a horn and pick up “Prison Warden’s Journal – Part One.” This starts The Choir. If you are only escaping, you can continue, but do not expect to start this quest after leaving the jail.

2. Reach the upstairs hallway
Continue to the upper floor, where soldiers patrol around the rafters. At the end of the long hallway, interact with the door to advance the next Choir step. Move carefully around the patrols rather than assuming every enemy follows the same timing in every game version.
#1 Best Overall
- HARNESS CORRUPTED POWER - Each death is a chance to grow stronger. Master a combat system of parries, dashes, and visceral finishers across a variety of weapons. Channel your power to enhance attacks and unlock new supernatural abilities to inflict upon your enemies.
- SECRETS LITTER THE BATTLEFIELD - Navigate a 19th-century alternate history where the costs of endless war have corrupted the landscape. Use your newfound mobility to outmaneuver the plague-ridden abominations of Napoleon’s Eternal Guard and uncover environmental secrets that may increase your chances of survival.
- UNCOVER A HORRID CONSPIRACY - Witness a compelling story where historical figures and realities intertwine with elements of horror and the supernatural. Explore beyond the dark corners of the world to discover the truth behind the plague and your unholy resurrection.
3. Use the rafters to reach the kitchen
Follow the rafters toward the centre of the upper floor. Drop into the kitchen and take the Armoury Key from the table. This is the key item for recovering your gear.
4. Recover your confiscated equipment
Return to the lower floor and use the Armoury Key on the armoury door. The room contains your equipment, allowing you to resume the chapter with your normal loadout instead of relying on the prison escape setup.

5. Pick up the second journal
In the small room beside the Armoury Key, collect “Prison Warden’s Journal – Part Two.” Both journal parts are required for the Choir sequence.
6. Get the Chapel Key
Cross to the opposite side of the upper floor. Enter the side room containing a memory and take the Key to the Chapel from the table.

7. Search the chapel
Return to the chapel door and use the key. Behind the bodies, on the counter, collect “Letter to Headquarters – A List of Deceased Prisoners.” This letter is the final prison item needed for The Choir.
8. Escape through the sewer
Continue along the main route through the jail and into the sewer. Once you emerge back in the city, do not stop at the prison entrance: the quest turn-in occurs beside the Lantern.

9. Complete The Choir in the city
At the board directly beside the Lantern, interact with it and place the deceased-prisoners letter. This completes The Choir and awards a Remnant’s Return.

Common mistakes
- Leaving before checking the upper floor: the Armoury Key, second journal, and Chapel Key are all inside the jail and cannot be collected later from this area.
- Skipping the chapel: opening the door is not enough; take the deceased-prisoners letter from the counter behind the bodies.
- Looking for the reward in the prison: The Choir finishes at the city board beside the Lantern after the sewer section.
- Assuming the quest is mandatory: The Choir is optional, while the main escape route can be completed without it.
