Start with the Sabre, learn to parry during an enemy’s attack string, and treat Endurance as a reserve for your next defensive action. In Valor Mortis, a successful parry damages posture and opens a counter opportunity; a block is the safer fallback because an immediate counterattack restores the health lost while blocking. Dodge attacks that bypass a guard, and do not begin an attack you cannot finish: attacks cannot be canceled into a parry.
This guide lays out a repeatable combat loop, weapon and build choices, resource management, practice settings, and an exploration method for difficult quests. It also separates confirmed launch information from details that have not been published, such as an exact parry-window duration.

What makes Valor Mortis combat different
Valor Mortis is a first-person Soulslike built around dual-wielded swords, firearms, magic, secrets, shortcuts, sidequests, and historically inspired architecture. First-person perspective makes attack direction and camera positioning especially important: you must read an enemy’s body and weapon while keeping enough space to react.
The combat system has two linked goals. You are trying to reduce an enemy’s health, but you are also trying to damage its posture. Parrying is the most direct way to turn an incoming attack into posture damage and a counter window. Once posture breaks, follow with a heavy attack or a powerful finisher instead of drifting back into neutral.

Every action also competes for Endurance. Attacks, blocks, and dodges consume it, and an empty Endurance bar removes your ability to attack or defend. A fight is therefore won by controlling tempo rather than by holding the attack input until the enemy falls.
The beginner combat loop
- Watch the wind-up. Let the enemy show which attack is coming before spending the whole Endurance bar.
- Complete your current swing. You cannot cancel an attack animation into a parry. Connor Bridgeman, Lyrical Games’ Director of Marketing, put it plainly in official launch guidance on October 13, 2026: “You can’t cancel an attack animation into a parry, so never start a swing you can’t finish.”
- Parry inside the attack string. Do not automatically wait for the final hit. A parry during a string builds posture damage and can create a critical or counter opportunity.
- Use a block when timing is uncertain. Blocking buys information and keeps you alive, provided you retain enough Endurance to counter or move away.
- Counter immediately after a successful block. Official guidance says that counter-attacking right after a block restores the health you lost while blocking.
- Dodge guard-bypassing attacks. If an attack punches through a guard, blocking is the wrong answer; move clear and preserve your next defensive option.
- Spend the opening. When posture breaks, use the heavy attack or finisher you have been saving rather than starting another low-commitment exchange.
This rhythm is more reliable than a damage race. It gives every enemy action a response and keeps your resources available for the next exchange.
How to parry reliably
Read the release, not the threat pose
Enemies often hold a threatening pose before the actual strike. Use the moment the attack begins to travel toward you as your visual cue. Because the game has no published numeric parry-window duration, avoid training yourself to a fixed number of frames. Learn the animation for each enemy family and reproduce the same visual timing.
Parry during a sequence
Many attacks arrive as strings. The first hit may be a safe opportunity to establish the rhythm, while later hits punish panic. A parry during the sequence can add posture pressure before the last swing and shorten the fight. Waiting for the final hit every time gives the enemy more chances to drain Endurance and health.
Never parry out of an unfinished attack
Plan one attack, then return to defense. If an enemy begins a swing while your own animation is still running, you cannot convert that animation into a parry. The practical rule is simple: use only an attack you can finish before the opponent’s release, and keep enough Endurance for the next response.
Convert posture damage into a finish
A parry is not the end of the exchange. It is the posture tool that creates the end. When the enemy staggers or exposes a critical opportunity, perform the heavy attack or powerful finisher immediately. Backing away without taking that opening lets posture recover and forces you to rebuild it.

A five-minute practice drill
- Enable Target Lock if camera movement makes the enemy’s shoulders or weapon hard to read.
- Choose one enemy family and observe a complete attack string without attacking.
- Block the first few attempts so you can identify the release and the number of hits.
- On the next attempts, parry one chosen hit in the middle of the string rather than trying to parry everything.
- After a successful parry, perform the same follow-up every time so the posture-break response becomes automatic.
- Repeat until you can leave enough Endurance for a dodge or block after your own attack.
Instant Restart is useful for this drill because it removes the downtime between attempts. It does not change the timing; it simply lets you repeat the same lesson quickly.

These are complementary answers, not three damage rankings. Choose based on the attack you see and the resources you have left.
| Defensive answer | Best use | Payoff | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parry | A readable strike inside an enemy string | Posture damage and a counter or critical window | Missing the timing exposes you while Endurance is still committed |
| Block | Uncertain timing or an unfamiliar attack | Immediate counterattack can restore the health lost while blocking | Consumes Endurance and is not the answer to attacks that bypass guarding |
| Dodge | Guard-piercing attacks or a position you cannot safely block | Removes you from the hit path and can reset spacing | Consumes Endurance and can leave you out of position if used too early |
A useful priority is: parry when the release is clear, block when it is not, and dodge when the attack defeats a guard. Whichever response you choose, do not spend the final portion of Endurance on an attack that leaves no defensive action available.
Which weapon should a beginner use?
Sabre: the forgiving starting choice
The independent combat guide describes the Sabre as retaining all three defensive options: block, dodge, and parry. That coverage is valuable while you are still learning enemy animations. If a parry attempt is late, you can block; if the attack ignores guarding, you can dodge. Start with the Sabre until parrying is reliable under pressure.
Rapier: a deliberate high-precision alternative
The Rapier gives up blocking. It relies on a perfectly timed parry for defense but can damage weak points without spending firearm ammunition. Its advantage is access to weak-point pressure and a different resource profile, not a universally higher damage value. Choose it after you can recognize attacks consistently and are comfortable committing to parries.

|---|---|---|
| Block, dodge, and parry | All three available | No block; dodge and parry remain |
| Parry dependence | Moderate; block covers mistakes | High; a mistimed parry has fewer defensive backups |
| Weak-point access | Uses the normal firearm approach | Can damage weak points without firearm ammunition |
| Camera and timing burden | Lower while learning | Higher because defense is more timing-dependent |
| Best fit | Learning enemy families and difficult quests | Players who can read releases and want precision weak-point play |
Do not switch weapons because one appears to have a better damage number. The meaningful trade-off is defensive coverage versus precision and ammunition independence.
Manage Endurance and Nephtoglobin separately
Endurance is your immediate survival budget
Endurance pays for attacks, blocks, and dodges. Before every exchange, ask whether the planned attack leaves enough for the response that follows. A nearly empty bar turns a minor mistake into a death because you cannot block or dodge the next hit. Short attack strings, a brief reset in spacing, and deliberate counters are safer than exhausting the bar for one extra swing.
Nephtoglobin is your combat-earned upgrade currency
Nephtoglobin is earned through combat and spent on Transmutations. It is not a substitute for Endurance in the middle of a fight. Decide on a Transmutation plan between encounters, then enter the next quest with enough combat practice to use that effect deliberately. Avoid treating every available purchase as mandatory; your choice should support the way you actually create openings.
Use firearms and Transmutations with purpose
Firearm weak points
Ammunition is scarce, so firearm shots should create a specific advantage rather than replace sword fundamentals. Official guidance highlights glowing weak points, explosive barrels, and red-orange nodes that reveal blocked paths. Scan an arena before firing: a single weak-point shot or environmental explosion can remove a dangerous phase, while indiscriminate shooting can leave you empty when a boss exposes its vulnerable area.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFire Transmutation
Fire Transmutation sets enemies alight and exposes them for a follow-up. Treat the burn as an opening: apply it, reposition, and finish with a controlled melee sequence or a weak-point shot. Do not spend Endurance recklessly while waiting for the effect to create space.
Three named Amber approaches
| Amber | Effect | Playstyle it supports | Trade-off to plan around |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marksman’s Bane | Allows bullet parries and returns a pistol round after a successful bullet parry | Ranged counterplay and ammunition-efficient precision | Requires confident timing; a missed bullet parry gives no refund |
| Volatile End | Weak-point shots explode for additional damage | Weak-point burst and environmental control | Its value depends on finding and hitting weak points |
| Butcher’s Carnage | Restores health through melee strikes | Aggressive close-range sustain | Removes Ferrofluid Flask healing, so failed melee pressure is harder to recover from |
These are playstyle choices rather than a single best build. Marksman’s Bane rewards ranged timing, Volatile End rewards deliberate shots, and Butcher’s Carnage rewards sustained melee pressure while accepting a healing restriction.
How to approach difficult quests
Scout before committing
Do not assume the shortest route is the safest. Levels are interconnected, and later abilities reopen earlier areas. Villages can contain shortcuts and alternate paths; optional areas may hide Ambers, story records, echoes, journal pages, and minibosses. A route that looks longer on the map may be safer once it creates a checkpoint-like shortcut or supplies an upgrade.
Rank #4
Compare routes with four questions
- Combat exposure: How many mandatory encounters must you pass before the next safe opportunity?
- Shortcut value: Does opening this route make future retries faster?
- Optional reward: Is an Amber, record, echo, journal page, or miniboss worth the additional risk now?
- Ability timing: Would returning later with a new ability remove a blocked path or make the fight safer?
Use a failed attempt as mapping information
After dying, record what caused the failure: an unseen guard-piercing attack, an empty Endurance bar, a missed parry in a string, or ammunition spent before a weak point. On the next run, change one variable only. This turns a difficult quest into a route-and-timing problem instead of an uncontrolled damage race.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Settings that make learning easier
Target Lock and Instant Restart are official assist options described in the independent combat guide. Target Lock can reduce camera-management burden while you learn a new enemy. Instant Restart shortens the gap between a failed parry and the next attempt. Enabling either option does not remove the need to read attacks; it removes a source of repetition and camera friction so your practice focuses on timing.
Learn one attack string per enemy family. Once you can identify that string, add a second. This is more dependable than trying to memorize every animation at once, especially in first-person view.
Common beginner mistakes and fixes
Starting a swing during an enemy wind-up
Symptom: You press parry but remain trapped in your attack animation. Fix: finish only attacks that fit the available opening, then return to defense before the enemy releases.
Waiting for the final hit every time
Symptom: The enemy’s string drains your Endurance before you ever create posture damage. Fix: practice parrying a readable middle hit and use the resulting posture pressure to shorten the sequence.
Best Value
Blocking guard-piercing attacks
Symptom: Your guard appears correct but damage still lands. Fix: identify that animation as a dodge-only response and reserve enough Endurance to move.
Countering too late after a block
Symptom: You block safely but do not recover the health you lost. Fix: counterattack immediately after the block, as the official guidance specifies.
Emptying Endurance for damage
Symptom: Your attack connects, then the next enemy hit cannot be blocked or dodged. Fix: stop the string earlier and preserve Endurance for one defensive action.

Firing at every target
Symptom: You reach a weak-point phase without ammunition. Fix: reserve rounds for glowing weak points, explosive barrels, and red-orange nodes that reveal blocked paths.
What is confirmed about the launch version
