Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide, dated April 11, 2024, documents installation, networking and maintenance but does not set a processor, core-count or memory floor. A commonly cited community starting point is 2 vCPU and 4 GB of RAM for a Linux VPS; that is an informal consensus, not an Iron Gate requirement or a guarantee for every world.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Valheim servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
Your practical choice depends on world complexity, how many people connect, whether you can administer a machine and router, and whether you use Steam networking or Crossplay. The sections below separate documented requirements from estimates and show how to plan, install and maintain a server without buying more capacity than you can justify.

What is officially required?
Iron Gate’s “A Guide to Dedicated Servers” explains how to install and run the server, select a save location, configure networking and manage backups. It does not publish minimum RAM, CPU core count, processor speed or a supported player-to-hardware formula. That absence matters: a listing that presents a precise hardware floor as an official Valheim specification is adding information that the guide does not provide.
Iron Gate describes the purpose clearly: “Running a dedicated server is a great way to provide a persistent world in which you and your friends can play anytime.” Persistence is the reason to run a separate process, but it does not imply a single universal hardware profile. A lightly used world and a heavily developed world can have different resource needs, and the official documentation does not attach a guaranteed capacity to a particular CPU or RAM amount.

Published information versus community sizing
| Figure or claim | Source and status | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| No RAM or CPU minimum | Iron Gate dedicated-server guide, April 11, 2024; no minimum is stated | Treat the official hardware requirement as unspecified rather than guessing a floor |
| 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM | Valheim Server Help community FAQ; publication year not stated | Use only as an informal Linux VPS starting point, then measure actual use |
| Memory can rise as a world becomes more complex | Valheim Server Help community FAQ | Leave headroom and increase capacity when monitoring shows sustained pressure |
The community FAQ itself says no published minimum exists, then reports “2vCore 4GB ram” as general consensus for a Linux VPS. That number is useful for initial planning, but it is not a manufacturer specification, a benchmark, or a promise that a particular number of players will fit. The page is undated, so it should not be presented as a current official requirement.
How much RAM and CPU should you plan for?
Start with the community baseline, not a guarantee
If you are renting a Linux VPS and need a first configuration to test, 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM is the clearest published community heuristic available in the supplied material. “Starting point” is the important phrase: install the server, observe its actual consumption during normal play and busy periods, and resize when the measurements show that the allocation is no longer comfortable.
Why a fixed number cannot answer every case
World complexity changes over time. Exploration, construction, stored objects and other persistent state can make a mature world different from a new one. The community guidance specifically warns that memory use can increase as the world becomes more complex. It does not publish a player-count table or a CPU benchmark, so do not convert 4 GB into a promised maximum number of players.
CPU allocation affects how much processing headroom the server has, but the official guide does not identify a required processor model, clock speed or core count. A faster host may improve responsiveness under load, yet that is an operational choice rather than a documented minimum. Monitor before upgrading: look for sustained high CPU utilization, memory pressure or swapping during the periods when your group is active.
A sensible capacity rule
- Use the 2 vCPU/4 GB figure only as an initial Linux VPS experiment.
- Keep operating-system and server processes from consuming all available memory; a system that is constantly paging needs more capacity even if it technically starts.
- Check utilization while players are connected and while the world is being saved, not only when the server is idle.
- Increase resources when usage remains high or when players experience delays, rather than buying a large instance solely because a listing claims it is “required.”
Home hosting or rented hosting?
Both approaches run the same dedicated-server software. The difference is who supplies and administers the machine, network connection and storage. Iron Gate’s guide supports a self-managed installation; it does not publish provider prices, uptime figures or a performance ranking, so those details must be verified with any host you consider.

| Decision factor | Home machine | Rented or managed host |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Install Windows or Linux, edit the launch script, choose storage and maintain the process | Provider may preinstall the server; exact automation varies by service |
| Router administration | Steam networking normally requires forwarding the selected port and the next port on your router | Often avoids home-router changes, but provider network and firewall settings still need checking |
| Control | Direct access to scripts, saves, backups and operating-system settings | Convenience can come with provider-specific file access and backup limits |
| Ongoing cost | Uses existing hardware but adds electricity, storage and your maintenance time | Recurring rental charge; price and included resources differ by provider |
| Scaling | Upgrade or replace the machine yourself | Resize the instance if the provider supports it |
A small always-on Windows or Linux computer can be practical when you already own suitable hardware and have a wired network connection. A rented machine is attractive when you do not want a home computer running continuously or cannot configure inbound networking. In either case, the community memory estimate remains a heuristic; verify the actual allocation and monitor it.
Networking: Steam ports versus Crossplay
Steam backend and the default port range
Iron Gate documents a default Steam-backend range of 2456–2457. The server uses the configured port and the following port, so selecting another base port means forwarding that port and its port+1 as appropriate. Your router rule must match the port selected in the launch configuration. Firewalls on the host and the router can both block connections even when the server process is running.
Crossplay relay
With the -crossplay option, Iron Gate says the server transmits data through a relay and therefore does not require port forwarding to be accessible outside the local network. Crossplay joins can use a public IP and port, a join code or the server list. In this mode, the guide says players cannot join with a local or loopback IP, so testing with an address such as 127.0.0.1 is not a valid way to verify an external Crossplay connection.
Iron Gate’s Crossplay FAQ says the join code can be copied from the pause menu and entered through Join Game on another platform. Xbox consoles can join a dedicated server when Crossplay is enabled, but an Xbox console cannot host a dedicated server itself.
Operating-system and software requirements
Windows
The official installation path uses Steam’s Library and the Tools section to install the dedicated server. Windows launches it with start_headless_server.bat. Iron Gate recommends editing a copy of the launch script because updates can reset the original file; otherwise, an update may remove your changes.

Linux
Linux uses ./start_server.sh. The guide lists these package dependencies: libatomic1, libpulse-dev and libpulse0. Install the dependencies required by your distribution before troubleshooting the game server itself. Distribution package names and installation commands differ, so use the package manager documentation for the Linux release you selected.
Docker
Iron Gate documents Docker as an alternative when a Linux installation has older libraries. The minimum library versions stated in the guide are GLIBC_2.29 and GLIBCXX_3.4.26. Check those versions in the image and host environment before assuming a container will solve a compatibility problem; Docker does not remove the need to provide storage, networking and a process that stays running.
Step-by-step setup checklist
- Choose the host. Decide between a home Windows/Linux machine and a rented Linux VPS or other managed environment. For a VPS trial, 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM is an informal community starting point, not an official floor.
- Install the dedicated server. On Steam, open Library, select Tools and install the Valheim dedicated-server package.
- Preserve your configuration. Copy the Windows batch file or Linux shell script before editing it, because updates reset the original script.
- Select the backend. Use the Steam backend when you can administer the required network forwarding. Add
-crossplaywhen relay-based access and cross-platform joining are more useful; Crossplay changes how players connect and rules out local or loopback-IP joining. - Set the save location. Keep the default location if it suits your host, or use the documented
-savediroption to place worlds on a deliberate storage path. - Configure access. For Steam networking, forward the selected port and port+1 through the router and host firewall. For Crossplay, do not add forwarding merely to expose the server; use the public address, join code or server list methods described by Iron Gate.
- Start and test. Launch
start_headless_server.baton Windows or./start_server.shon Linux. Test from the same connection method your players will use, rather than assuming a local test proves outside access. - Record administration settings. Use the documented admin, banned and permitted lists to control who can manage or enter the world.
Saves, backups and shutdown
Choose storage with enough room for the world and its backups, and make sure the account running the server can write to the save directory. Iron Gate documents save intervals and automatic-backup settings, so configure those deliberately instead of relying on a single live file. A backup is only useful if it is retained separately enough to survive accidental deletion or corruption.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStop the process with Ctrl+C. Iron Gate warns that closing the command window can leave the server running in the background, which can complicate a restart or maintenance. Confirm that the process has actually stopped before replacing files, changing launch parameters or rebooting the host.
Monitoring and upgrade decisions
Capacity planning is an ongoing task rather than a one-time checkbox. Record RAM use, CPU use, swap activity and storage growth while players are online. Compare quiet periods with events that stress the world, such as several players exploring or building at once. The community FAQ’s advice to watch utilization is more defensible than assigning a made-up player limit to a hardware package.

Signs that the allocation needs attention
- Memory remains close to the allocation and the operating system begins swapping.
- CPU usage stays high during ordinary play rather than only during startup.
- The save directory or backup set approaches the available disk capacity.
- Players report delays that coincide with measurable resource saturation or network errors.
When those symptoms persist, first check configuration, firewall rules and storage health. If the host is genuinely constrained, increase RAM or CPU allocation, move to a stronger machine or reduce competing workloads. There is no official upgrade threshold in the guide, so document your own observations and change one variable at a time.
Common failure points
Players cannot connect through Steam
Verify that the configured base port and port+1 are forwarded to the correct internal address, that the host firewall permits the server and that the launch script uses the port you forwarded. A mismatch between the script and router is more likely than a missing “minimum” hardware setting.
Crossplay works for some players but not a local-IP test
That behavior can be expected. Crossplay uses a relay and does not support joining by local or loopback IP in that mode. Test with the public address and port, join code or server-list entry instead.
The server stops after an update
Check whether you edited the original launch script. Iron Gate recommends editing a copy because updates reset the original. Reapply your saved parameters to the copy, then confirm the save directory and backend option before restarting.
Linux reports missing libraries
Install libatomic1, libpulse-dev and libpulse0 for the distribution, or evaluate the documented Docker route when the system libraries are too old. Docker still requires at least GLIBC_2.29 and GLIBCXX_3.4.26 according to Iron Gate’s guide.
Bottom line for choosing a Valheim server
Do not shop for a server based on an alleged official RAM or CPU minimum: none is published in Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide. If you need a concrete first experiment, the Valheim Server Help FAQ’s 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM Linux-VPS consensus is a reasonable informal baseline. Treat it as a measurement starting point, keep backups and monitor the world as it grows.

Choose rented hosting when avoiding home-router administration and always-on hardware is worth a recurring fee. Steam networking uses the documented 2456–2457 default range and normally needs forwarding; Crossplay uses a relay, supports cross-platform joining and avoids that outside-access forwarding requirement.
