The Valerion VisionMaster Max pairs standout brightness and color with unusually deep blacks for a projector, according to Mark Knapp’s TechRadar review. That combination makes it an appealing all-round home cinema option, but TechRadar’s review price of $4,999 / £4,349 / AU$5,999 is difficult to justify when less expensive rivals can match it on many fronts.
What makes the VisionMaster Max’s picture stand out?
TechRadar reviewer Mark Knapp found the VisionMaster Max exceptionally bright and colorful, with a black floor among the deepest he had seen from a compact projector. The review describes a clear 4K picture that can remain compelling without always darkening the living room. These are reviewer observations, not a guarantee that every viewer or room will produce the same impression.

Valerion specifies 3,500 lumens. Knapp reports that 3,500 ISO lumens bore out during his testing and found the projector bright enough for varied everyday viewing conditions; this is a reviewer’s test observation, not a separately conducted independent lab result. The projector uses a three-laser DLP optical system.

In a dedicated dark viewing room, the Max’s contrast can also make reflections from surrounding surfaces more noticeable, so the room itself may affect how convincing the blacks look.

Picture trade-offs to know before buying
- Some color profiles oversaturate. The review says adjusting picture mode can help.
- Motion smoothing may look artificial. Knapp notes a soap-opera effect; picture-mode changes can mitigate it.
- DLP rainbow effects are present. The review says an anti-rainbow option is available, with some additional fan noise.
Whether these issues matter depends on the viewer and settings. The review’s overall picture verdict remains strongly positive, particularly for brightness, color and contrast.
How much does it cost, and is the premium justified?
TechRadar lists a review price of $4,999 / £4,349 / AU$5,999. Those are figures from its September 2026 review, not a guarantee of current local retail pricing; check the seller’s current price and any bundle terms before buying.
TechRadar names the Xgimi Horizon 20 Max and Hisense C2 Ultra as less expensive competitors that can rival the Valerion on many fronts. Its comparison table lists the Xgimi at $2,999 and the Sony Bravia Projector 7 at $9,999 alongside the VisionMaster Max at $4,999. These are review-page figures, not current-price guarantees. Knapp says he would direct most buyers to the Xgimi at the Valerion’s full review price. The Sony is a premium black-level benchmark in the comparison, not a value alternative.

The Max makes most sense for buyers who place a high value on its reported contrast and color and are comfortable paying more for that picture. If a lower price matters more, or you rarely dim the room, TechRadar’s assessment suggests a cheaper model may suit you better.
Features and setup: versatile, but plan for sound
TechRadar lists Google TV, image sizes from 40 to 300 inches, two HDMI 2.1 ports and one HDMI 2.0 port with eARC. It also describes flexible optics and a gaming mode. The review’s summary, however, flags speakers that do not match the visuals and a remote with limited backlighting. Buyers who want sound to keep pace with the picture should budget for an external home theater speaker system.
TechRadar mentions screen, ThunderBeat 4.1.2 wireless sound system and external-lens bundles. Treat these as setup possibilities rather than required purchases: the review does not establish a particular compatible screen model or an independent accessory test. An external lens may be relevant if your room needs a longer throw, but confirm VisionMaster Max compatibility and availability before purchasing one.

Who should consider it?
- Consider it if contrast, bright color and all-round home entertainment matter more than getting the lowest price.
- Compare lower-priced models first if the premium is hard to justify for your room or viewing habits.
- Look beyond the Max for a gaming-first purchase. TechRadar advises gaming-focused buyers to consider waiting for newer competitors with VRR support.
This is the Valerion VisionMaster Max, not the VisionMaster Pro 2. Valerion’s official product comparison page presents them as separate models, with Max-specific features including refined EBL control and optical adjustments; Pro 2 review findings should not be treated as Max specifications.
