There are three practical arrangements for a small group. They use the same game world concept, but differ in who keeps the process running, who controls the files, and who handles networking and updates.

Client or LAN hosting
This is the lowest-effort choice. Start a private or LAN world from the game and invite the people who should play. It is suitable when everyone plays at roughly the same time and nobody needs to enter the world while the host is away. The limitation is structural: the world depends on the host’s active game session. Closing the game, losing the connection or suspending the computer ends access for everyone else.

Self-hosting the dedicated application
A standalone server process separates the world from the player’s game client. You can run it on a spare Windows PC or on a machine that stays powered on, then join from another computer. This route gives you direct control over the server name, password, player limit, PvE or PvP mode, save behavior and other rules, but you are also responsible for keeping the process updated, protecting the files and exposing it safely to the internet.
Renting a managed server
A rental provider runs the dedicated process for you and normally supplies a browser control panel. Stunlock Studios’ hosting article states: “You can rent and manage your server through POCKETHOST.” The same article describes controls for status, basic settings, logs, configuration files, restart, update and permissions. A managed plan reduces operating work, but it introduces a recurring charge and provider-specific limits, so check the exact plan before paying.
How to set up a self-hosted V Rising dedicated server on Windows
Stunlock’s documented workflow uses Steam’s Tools library and the Windows server executable. Follow these steps on the computer that will run the world.
- Install the tool. Open Steam, switch to the Tools section of your Library, search for
V Rising Dedicated Server, and install it. This is separate from the normal game client. - Open the installation folder. Use Steam’s management option to browse the files, or locate the folder you selected during installation.
- Run the actual server executable. Launch
VRisingServer.exefrom that folder. Pressing Steam’s Launch button by itself opens documentation rather than starting the server process, so verify that the executable is running. - Preserve the example startup file. Copy or rename the supplied example start script before editing it. Stunlock warns that an update can restore the original example file and erase changes made directly to it. Keep your edited copy under a recognizable name.
- Set an identifiable server name. Put a clear name in the startup configuration or host settings so your group can distinguish the world in the in-game list. Avoid names that reveal private information if the server will be publicly visible.
- Start and observe the process. Leave the server window open while testing. Wait for initialization to finish and for the world to appear in the in-game server list; the first startup can take longer than later restarts.
- Connect locally first. From another device on the same network, look for the listed server name. This isolates game and configuration problems from internet routing problems.
- Test external access. Friends outside your home network can use the listed name or the host’s external IP, provided the computer firewall and router are configured to pass the server traffic. The exact port values and forwarding rules are not specified in the supplied official instructions, so use the current server documentation and your router’s terminology rather than guessing a port.
Do not close the server process after a successful test if you expect an always-on world. If the host computer sleeps, reboots or loses power, the world becomes unavailable until the process starts again.

V Rising separates hosting-related options from gameplay rules. The two principal files are listed below.

The installation files provide defaults. Put your changes in the LocalLow override directory instead of modifying the installed templates. Keeping the override files small—only the values you intentionally changed—makes them easier to review and allows new defaults from later versions to apply automatically where you have not set a custom value.

The -persistentDataPath launch parameter can move the persistent data location. This is useful when one computer runs more than one server: give each process its own data directory so saves, logs and settings cannot be mixed. Record the path in the startup script and back up each directory separately.
Edit JSON safely
- Stop the server process before changing either JSON file. Editing a file while the process is running can leave you unsure which values were loaded.
- Make a dated copy of the current file before each change. Keep the original formatting and valid JSON punctuation.
- Change only keys documented in the current settings reference. Do not copy an option from an older guide without checking that the installed version still supports it.
- Restart the server and inspect its behavior in game. If the process refuses to start, restore the last known-good file and reapply one change at a time.
- Keep host settings and game settings in their respective files. A valid value in the wrong file will not have the intended effect.
Settings to decide before inviting friends
A server that is technically reachable can still be frustrating if its rules are unclear. Decide these items before publishing the name or sharing the IP.
- Identity and access: choose a recognizable name, add a description if your host interface supports it, and set a password for a private group.
- Player limit: select a limit that matches the people you actually intend to support. A higher limit can increase management and hardware demands.
- World mode: choose PvE or PvP deliberately. Explain the choice to every player because it changes the consequences of combat and base protection.
- Save behavior: select an interval and retention approach that protects progress without creating an unmanageable collection of old files.
- Clan and castle rules: review grouping, territory and castle-related options so the rules fit whether this is a cooperative world or a competitive one.
- Rates: resource gathering, crafting and other progression modifiers should be agreed by the group before the first session; changing them later can alter the balance of an existing world.
- Vampire and enemy modifiers: use these to tune difficulty and survivability rather than changing several unrelated values at once.
- Raid scheduling: if the world allows raids, set a window that is reasonable for the players’ time zones.
Use the current V Rising settings reference for the exact key names and allowed values. The filenames and folders above tell you where to place the values; they do not make an undocumented value valid.
Networking: making the server reachable
Server discovery and internet connectivity are separate tests. A server may appear on the host’s computer while remaining unreachable to friends outside the home network.

If the server does not appear in the list
- Confirm
VRisingServer.exeis still running and has completed startup. - Check that the server name in the startup configuration or settings file is spelled exactly as intended.
- Restart the process after changing a settings file; most values are read at startup.
- Temporarily test from the same local network. If local players cannot see it, solve the process or firewall issue before changing router settings.
- Allow the server application through the operating system firewall on the network profile you actually use. Avoid disabling the firewall globally.
If local players connect but remote friends cannot
The server is probably running, so focus on the path between the internet and the host computer. Confirm the host’s current external IP, ensure the router forwards the server traffic to the correct internal computer, and check that the computer’s firewall allows the same traffic. A changing residential IP can invalidate an address you sent earlier. Test from a genuinely external connection, such as a friend’s network or a mobile hotspot, rather than from inside the same router.
If a name works but an IP does not
Recheck which address you shared. The internal address shown by the host computer is not normally usable by someone on the internet. Use the address and connection method displayed by the server interface or current official instructions, and do not post a private IP publicly.
Backups, updates and routine operation
Operating a dedicated server is mostly an exercise in preserving the world and making changes reversible.
Back up before every major change
- Stop the server cleanly so the latest save is flushed.
- Copy the persistent save directory and both settings files to a separate location. If you use
-persistentDataPath, back up that custom directory. - Add the date and server name to the backup folder.
- Keep at least one copy on a different drive or computer. A second copy in the same failing drive is not a reliable backup.
- After an update, start the server with the previous settings, confirm the world loads, then make one planned change at a time.
Plan updates
Update the dedicated-server tool when your players can tolerate downtime. Stop the process, preserve the edited startup script and backups, apply the update through Steam, then check whether the example files were replaced. Start the server and verify the name, rules and save before announcing that the world is open again. Keep the game client and dedicated server on compatible versions; a client update can make an older server unsuitable for joining.

Keep an operating note
Record the installation folder, persistent-data path, server name, password-sharing method, backup location and the last update date. This short note prevents a future administrator from editing the wrong copy of a file or restoring an unrelated world.

Managed rental: what to verify before subscribing
A managed host can be the sensible choice when nobody wants to maintain Windows, router rules and a server process. The control panel described by Stunlock includes status, basic settings, logs, configuration files, restart, update and permission controls, but the exact interface and limits belong to the provider.
Before ordering, ask for the current details in writing:

- Monthly or recurring price, billing interval and cancellation procedure.
- Server location and whether you can change regions later.
- Included player slots and what happens if you exceed them.
- Automated backup frequency, retention period and whether you can download a backup.
- How updates are scheduled and whether you can delay one while checking compatibility.
- Access to
ServerHostSettings.json,ServerGameSettings.jsonand logs. - Support for the mods or configuration changes your group expects, if any.
- Permission roles for additional administrators and the process for removing them.
- What happens to your save files when you cancel or move to another provider.
Do not assume that “managed” means unlimited performance or guaranteed uptime. Read the provider’s current terms for resource limits, maintenance windows and data retention.
Hardware and operating-system expectations
Windows has the simplest documented beginner path because the official instructions use Steam and a Windows LocalLow settings directory. Linux or Wine can work for experienced administrators, but it adds operating-system and command-line dependencies that are outside that basic workflow.
The following figures come from a community V Rising Wiki guide, crawled in 2026. They are useful planning context, not universal current requirements from Stunlock Studios.

Actual needs vary with world age, player activity, settings and what else runs on the machine. Watch memory, CPU and free disk space after your group has played for several sessions rather than relying on a single specification.
Common failure modes and recovery steps
Steam opens documentation instead of a server
Use the installation folder and launch VRisingServer.exe. The Steam Library launch action described by the official article is not, by itself, the server process.
Your settings revert after an update
Restore the edited startup script you copied before making changes, then compare the two files. Updates can replace the original example script, which is why your working copy should have a separate name. Also verify that your JSON overrides are in the LocalLow directory, not only in the installation’s defaults folder.
A setting appears to do nothing
Confirm that you changed the correct file, used the exact key and value accepted by the current settings reference, and restarted the process. Remove unrelated edits and test a single documented value. If the server still ignores it, restore the backup and check version-specific documentation.
The world loads with old progress
Stop the process and inspect the active persistent-data path. A second server may be pointing at another directory, especially if you recently added -persistentDataPath. Restore the newest verified save only after making a copy of the current files.

Players lose access after the host reboots
Start the dedicated process again and confirm that the machine’s sleep settings, automatic updates and power plan are not stopping it. For a world that must remain online while the owner is away, a managed service or a separately administered always-on machine may be a better fit than a gaming desktop that is routinely shut down.
