What servants are for
A converted servant is a permanent castle worker and defender until it dies on a failed hunt or is otherwise lost. Servants can protect your castle, accompany your command structure, and return with mission loot. The Castle Throne is the control point for sending them to destinations you have already discovered.
Servant performance is determined primarily by two things: the quality of the NPC you captured and the gear level you give that servant. Blood quality is translated into an expertise value under the current servant system, while gear level controls hunt proficiency and much of the servant’s combat power. The equipment’s secondary bonuses, set bonuses, and durability do not improve servant performance, so upgrading the item level is a more reliable investment than chasing player-oriented affixes.

Requirements before you capture anyone
- Complete the Servants quest. This unlocks Dominate, the power used to subdue a target.
- Build at least one Servant Coffin. The coffin is where the NPC is converted and where the finished servant is summoned and managed.
- Have 100 Blood Essence available. This is paid when conversion begins, not when Dominate is cast.
- Plan a route home. Waygates cannot be used while you are escorting a subdued target. If the route is unsafe, an item called Dusk Caller can move a dominated target to an empty Prison Cell instead.
- For missions, complete Army of Darkness and build a Castle Throne. The throne sends servants to discovered destinations and sets hunt duration.
Servant Coffins must be approximately within 14 tiles of the Castle Throne to be available for assignments. Build the coffins and throne in the same practical castle area rather than scattering them across distant rooms.
How to convert an NPC into a servant
- Find an eligible target. Dominate works on humans and some draculin. The target must have an active blood type; creatures outside those categories cannot be converted with this method.
- Activate Dominate and select the target. The target can still attack while the channel is running, so begin in a defensible position and avoid starting the channel beside additional enemies.
- Lower the target to roughly 30% health. Dominate only completes when the target is sufficiently weakened. Stop dealing damage once the health threshold is reached so you do not kill the NPC before the channel finishes.
- Finish the channel. A successful channel makes the target subdued and neutral. It follows you, but it can still take damage from enemies, environmental hazards, or stray attacks while you escort it.
- Return to your castle on foot. Waygates are unavailable during the escort. Clear the route first if possible, and keep the target away from patrols and area damage. If you need to relocate it directly, use Dusk Caller on an empty Prison Cell.
- Start conversion at a Servant Coffin. Interact with the coffin and choose the conversion option. Pay 100 Blood Essence to begin the timer.
- Wait for completion. Conversion takes 20 minutes of real time. A coffin on matching Crypt Flooring reduces that time to 10 minutes.
- Summon and equip the new servant. When the timer ends, use the coffin’s management interface to summon the servant, give it equipment, and make it available for defense or a hunt.
Conversion is not an instant rescue mechanic. The NPC must survive the escort, and the castle must remain secure during the conversion timer. If an enemy reaches the coffin room, deal with the threat before starting another conversion rather than leaving a new servant vulnerable.
How to choose a good servant
Target eligibility and blood type
Humans and some draculin are valid targets, but the best capture is not necessarily the first eligible NPC you find. Check the target’s blood type and percentage before committing to the escort. Blood quality is converted into expertise under the current system introduced with Update 1.1. The cited mechanics reference gives the formula as expertise equal to half the blood-quality percentage. A high-quality capture therefore starts with more expertise than a low-quality capture of the same blood type.
Expertise improves maximum health, physical power, hunt proficiency, and loot. Those bonuses make a high-quality NPC valuable both as a guard and as a mission worker. If you are building a roster rather than converting one emergency recruit, keep several blood types and regional backgrounds so you can match a servant to the destination later.

Blood-type perks
Blood-type perks reduce hunt difficulty in the environments they support. These perks do not stack, so assigning several servants with the same useful blood type does not multiply the reduction. A varied roster gives you more ways to answer different destination requirements.
Faction perks
Faction perks increase loot when a servant works in its home region. The practical choice is to pair a servant’s faction with a destination where that faction has the regional advantage, then use blood type to reduce the location’s difficulty. The two bonuses address different parts of the calculation: blood type helps the chance of success, while faction affiliation improves the amount brought home.
Servant equipment: prioritize gear level
Give a servant the highest gear level you can spare. Gear level improves combat statistics and raises hunt proficiency by 10 times the gear level. That scaling makes a modestly higher-level loadout more useful than a lower-level set covered in attractive secondary effects.
- Gear level matters: it directly improves the servant’s hunt proficiency and combat power.
- Secondary stats do not matter: bonuses that are useful to a player character do not improve servant results.
- Set bonuses do not matter: do not reserve a complete set solely for a servant because its set effect will not increase servant performance.
- Durability does not matter: a servant’s equipment durability does not affect its mission outcome.
Equip the servant before sending it out, and replace the loadout when you obtain a clear gear-level upgrade. Since missions can last up to 16 real-time hours, a servant with inadequate gear can remain inefficient for most of a day.

Build and use the Castle Throne
After completing Army of Darkness, build a Castle Throne. Its in-game description says: "Sit down in the Throne and command your servants. Send them to hunt for treasure, knowledge and blood." The throne is not merely decorative: it is the interface that turns converted NPCs into mission workers.
- Place the throne near the coffins. Keep every Servant Coffin approximately within 14 tiles so the throne can detect it.
- Interact with the throne. Choose an available coffin and select a destination.
- Use only discovered locations. A servant cannot be dispatched to a location you have not discovered with your character.
- Select a duration from 2 to 16 hours. The duration is real time, not accelerated castle time.
- Review the projected success and loot values. Match the servant’s blood type, faction, and gear level to the destination before confirming.
- Confirm the hunt. The servant leaves the coffin for the selected period and returns with loot if the hunt succeeds.
Because hunts continue in real time, start a long mission when you expect to be away from the game. Use shorter missions when you will be online to react to changing priorities or replace a servant’s gear.

The servant reference lists the following game-table values. They are real-time durations and should be checked against the current game version after major patches.

The duration bonus is not a guarantee of success. It adds to the hunt’s success calculation while also increasing the time before the servant returns. A long hunt with a poorly matched servant can still fail, and failure kills the assigned servant.

How to plan a hunt
Start with the destination
Choose the region and its difficulty before choosing a servant. Confirm that the destination is discovered, then look for a servant whose blood type supports that environment and whose faction is associated with the region. This order prevents you from assigning a strong servant to a location where its specific perks provide little value.
Use the roster instead of one “best” servant
Because blood-type perks do not stack, a roster with different blood types is more flexible than several nearly identical servants. Keep at least one well-geared option for each environment your current map progress makes available. A high-quality servant with the wrong environmental perk can be less useful than a slightly weaker servant whose blood type reduces that hunt’s difficulty.
Pick duration according to risk
Use the 2-hour setting when losing the servant would disrupt your defense or when you are still learning a destination’s difficulty. Move to 4 or 6.5 hours once the success chance is comfortable. Reserve 10- and 16-hour hunts for servants with strong expertise, suitable perks, and an appropriate gear level, because a failed long mission still ends with the servant’s death.
Keep a defensive reserve
Do not send every capable servant away if your castle needs protection. Leave enough strength behind to defend the castle while the mission team is absent, especially when you are playing on a server where other threats can reach the base. The throne lets you choose which coffin to dispatch, so treat your roster as two pools: mission workers and guards.
What happens when a hunt fails
A failed hunt kills the servant assigned to it. This is a permanent mission failure until you use that servant’s coffin to resurrect it; the servant does not simply return wounded with reduced rewards.

- Choose resurrection. The coffin offers the recovery action after the failed hunt.
- Pay 50 Blood Essence. This is the resurrection cost.
- Wait 10 minutes. Resurrection takes 10 minutes of real time.
Resurrection is blocked while the castle is under attack. End the attack and secure the castle before trying again. If you lack 50 Blood Essence, the coffin remains unavailable until you obtain the required amount. Once the timer completes, reassess the servant’s gear, blood-type match, faction, and chosen duration before sending it back to the same destination.
Servant or prisoner: which should you choose?
A subdued target does not have to become a servant. You can place it in a Prison Cell instead. The right choice depends on whether you need a renewable blood source now or automated missions and castle labor over time.

Use the Prison Cell route for a rare, high-quality blood source you expect to consume repeatedly. Use the Servant Coffin route for a target whose expertise and perks will improve your castle or mission roster. Dusk Caller can move a dominated target to an empty Prison Cell when escorting it through the open world is impractical.
Troubleshooting common conversion problems
Dominate will not start
- Confirm that the Servants quest is complete and the Dominate power is unlocked.
- Check that the target is a human or one of the draculin types that can be converted.
- Look for an active blood type on the target. An invalid creature cannot be converted just because it is humanoid in appearance.
The target dies before conversion
- Stop attacking as the target approaches roughly 30% health.
- Begin the channel away from other enemies, since the target can attack during the channel.
- Protect the subdued target during the escort; it can still take damage after Dominate succeeds.
The target will not reach the castle
- Remember that Waygates cannot be used while the target is subdued.
- Clear a route before starting the escort and avoid area damage that could hit the follower.
- Use Dusk Caller to send the dominated target to an empty Prison Cell if that is your intended destination.
The coffin is not available at the throne
- Check that the Castle Throne has been built after Army of Darkness was completed.
- Move the coffin closer; it should be approximately within 14 tiles of the throne.
- Make sure the destination has been discovered and that the servant is not already assigned to another activity.
A hunt fails too often
- Raise gear level first, because it directly increases hunt proficiency by 10 times the gear level.
- Match blood type to the destination’s environment and faction to the servant’s home region.
- Choose a shorter duration until the roster can support the location. The extra loot from a long hunt is not worth repeatedly losing servants.
Resurrection is unavailable
- End any active castle attack; resurrection is blocked during an attack.
- Have 50 Blood Essence ready and allow the full 10-minute timer to complete.
A practical servant-management routine
- Capture selectively. Inspect blood quality and type before deciding whether the NPC deserves a coffin or a prison cell.
- Convert near the throne. Keep the coffin in range and place matching Crypt Flooring underneath when reducing the timer matters.
- Equip by gear level. Ignore secondary stats, set bonuses, and durability when choosing a servant loadout.
- Maintain a mixed roster. Different blood types and factions give you more destination-specific options because blood-type perks do not stack.
- Keep guards home. Send only the servants you can safely spare for the selected mission duration.
- Scale duration gradually. Move from 2 hours to 4, 6.5, 10, or 16 hours as success becomes reliable, rather than committing a new servant to the longest mission immediately.
- Rebuild after failure. Resurrect the dead servant when the castle is safe, then correct the gear, matchup, or duration that caused the failed hunt.
The servant system rewards preparation more than frantic captures. A smaller roster of high-quality, well-equipped servants matched to several regions is generally more useful than a large group of under-geared NPCs sent on missions they are poorly suited to complete.

The expertise formula cited here applies after Update 1.1, and the hunt table is described as game-table data.
