Choose PvE if you want cooperative progression, castle building and boss hunting without other players attacking you. Choose PvP if fights, territorial pressure and possible castle raids are the reason you are playing. On PvP, inspect the server’s player-damage rule, castle-damage rule, raid hours, group-size limit, reset cadence and moderation before committing. Your character and castle are tied to that server, so changing modes normally means starting over.
The short answer: PvE for progression, PvP for conflict
V Rising’s two broad server modes support different kinds of survival game. PvE protects players from direct attacks by other players and prevents direct attacks on their castles. You still fight bosses, wildlife and environmental hazards, gather resources, defend routes and develop a vampire castle, but another player cannot simply kill you or destroy your base under the PvE rules described by the server.

PvP adds human opposition. Depending on the individual server configuration, other players can damage you, contest territory and potentially raid your castle. “PvP” is therefore not one universal ruleset. A server can permit player combat while restricting castle attacks to particular hours, or it can make both forms of damage available at all times. Read the complete listing rather than choosing from the PvP label alone.
- Pick PvE when uninterrupted co-op, exploration, crafting, V Blood bosses and building are your priorities.
- Pick PvP when ambushes, build adaptation, territory disputes and the risk of losing progress make the game more exciting rather than frustrating.
- Use the middle path if you want to learn fighting without an open-world raid environment: Update 1.1 adds risk-free duels and castle arenas.
What the server settings actually change
The base ruleset is the server’s GameModeType. The practical experience is further determined by separate damage settings. Stunlock’s documented rule definitions distinguish player damage from castle damage, so two servers marked PvP can feel radically different.

GameModeType |
PvE or PvP | Sets the server’s overall mode, but does not by itself tell you every combat or raid condition. |
PlayerDamageMode |
Always or TimeRestricted | Determines whether players can damage one another continuously or only during scheduled interaction windows. |
CastleDamageMode |
Never, Always or TimeRestricted | Determines whether castles are protected permanently, vulnerable continuously or vulnerable only during specified periods. |
On a PvE server, direct player and castle damage is blocked by the mode. On a PvP server, the two damage settings decide how much of that danger exists. “TimeRestricted” is not a universal clock: the owner or official listing must state the applicable hours and timezone. If the listing does not make the window clear, treat that uncertainty as a reason to ask the owner or choose another server.
Why PvE is usually the best first server
You can learn the survival loop without social pressure
New players have several systems to absorb at once: daylight management, blood quality, weapon abilities, spell choices, crafting stations, resource routes, castle-heart progression and V Blood boss patterns. PvE lets you practice those systems without repeatedly reacting to an enemy player who knows the map better. You can test a build, abandon a route, or spend an evening decorating and reorganizing a castle without expecting a raid.
Co-op groups keep their own pace
For a group whose goal is to defeat bosses and build a shared home, PvE removes the conflict that most often interrupts that plan. Friends can gather materials, explore and return to a base without another clan using the same session to attack them. This is particularly useful when players have different experience levels or cannot all be online at the same time.

Removing player attacks does not remove V Rising’s core survival demands. Bosses still require preparation and pattern recognition. Wildlife can interrupt travel, sunlight limits movement, resource nodes force route planning and progression gates determine which recipes and abilities you can unlock. The available server-setting evidence does not establish one universal PvE difficulty or a guaranteed completion time, so do not judge a server by an invented “easy” or “hard” label.
Choose PvE when loss would end the session for you
If losing a castle, being interrupted during a boss attempt or having to rebuild after a raid would make you quit, PvE is the safer fit. It also suits players whose schedules rarely overlap with a server’s published combat windows; you do not have to plan every login around protecting a base.
When PvP is worth the risk
You want opponents, not just tougher monsters
Human enemies change the value of every decision. A familiar route may be watched, a popular resource area may become contested and a strong-looking build may fail against a counter-build. PvP rewards scouting, deception, timing and communication in ways NPC encounters cannot reproduce.
You can accept setbacks and play the server’s schedule
PvP is a better choice when your group regards a lost fight or damaged castle as part of the story rather than a reason to stop. Time-restricted servers still require schedule discipline: you need to know when players can attack and when castles can be damaged, then decide whether those hours overlap with your own availability.

Understand the variants in official listings
Official listings include variants such as PvP Weekend Raid and PvP Merciless. Examples include daily-raid and weekend-raid schedules, one-month or three-month resets, and squad or duo formats. These labels are useful filters, not permanent guarantees. Schedules and server policies can change, so the live listing for the exact server you join is authoritative.
Compare a server on six decision axes
Before creating a character, write down the following values from the listing. A server that looks ideal under one heading may be a poor fit under another.
1. Player-damage timing
Always means fights can occur whenever the rules otherwise permit them. TimeRestricted confines player damage to a published period. Confirm the timezone and whether the restriction applies every day, only on weekends or on another schedule.
2. Castle-damage timing
Never protects the castle from direct player damage. Always allows attacks whenever the server’s other conditions are met. TimeRestricted creates a raid window. Do not infer castle protection from the player-damage setting; they are separate controls.

Look for exact days and hours, not just phrases such as “casual PvP.” Weekend-only windows favor players who can be online then, while daily windows create more frequent exposure. If the listing omits a timezone, obtain clarification before investing in a long-term base.
4. Group-size rules
Servers may be configured for solo, duo or larger squads. A duo server changes the balance of scouting, defense and resource sharing compared with a squad server. Join a server whose limit matches your actual group; an informal extra player can violate the owner’s rules or create an unfair advantage.
5. Reset cadence
Official examples include one-, three- and six-month cycles. A short cycle produces a fresh race for territory more often but gives a castle less time to mature. A longer cycle supports extended projects while allowing established groups to accumulate more power. Treat the displayed cadence as a policy, not a promise of an exact future date.
6. Moderation and conduct rules
Stunlock’s code applies to official servers. Private-server owners can set their own code and enforcement approach. Check how griefing, exploits, harassment, offline raiding and disputes are handled, and find out where reports are submitted. Mechanical settings cannot compensate for unclear moderation.
Solo, duo or co-op: match the mode to your group
| Player situation | Usually the better starting point | Why | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo player learning the game | PvE | Provides time to learn bosses, crafting and movement without defending a base from human attackers. | Server population, reset date and whether the owner expects a particular play schedule. |
| Two friends seeking competition | Duo PvP or PvE with duels | A duo-limited PvP server keeps team sizes comparable; PvE plus duels offers practice without open-world raids. | Duo enforcement, player-damage hours and whether duels have gear-risk rules. |
| Established group that wants territory fights | Squad PvP | Supports coordinated scouting, defense and sieges when the group accepts the reset and raid schedule. | Maximum clan size, castle-damage window, reset cadence and moderation. |
| Friends with irregular availability | PvE or protected PvP schedule | Reduces the chance that an absence coincides with an attack window. | Exact raid hours and offline-protection behavior stated by the server. |
The table is a decision aid, not a guarantee of population or quality. An empty PvP server may offer little combat, while a busy PvE server can still feel highly competitive around resources and boss routes.
Can players raid your castle on PvE?
Under the PvE mode described in the rules, players cannot directly harm other players or their castles. That means another player cannot use the normal player-versus-player or castle-damage mechanics to destroy your base on a PvE server. PvE does not make the castle invulnerable to every possible problem: server resets, owner policy, technical failures or a rule violation can still affect your progress. Read the specific listing for any custom settings before assuming it follows the default behavior.
How raids and castle loss work on PvP
Player combat and castle attacks are separate risks
A server may let players fight while setting CastleDamageMode to Never. In that case, you can be ambushed or challenged but your castle is not directly raidable under the configured rules. Conversely, a server with a time-restricted castle window may require you to defend a base only during those hours. Confirm both settings.
Build around the published window
On a time-restricted server, schedule storage, crafting and group defense around the vulnerable period. Before joining, convert the listed hours to every member’s local timezone. If the window falls while your group is normally offline, the server’s rules may create a disadvantage you cannot solve with better gear.
Expect the possibility of a reset as well as a raid
A successful defense does not make a server permanent. Official resets can erase the world’s accumulated progress, including vampires, castles and other server data. A private owner may wipe on a different timetable or keep the world persistent. Raid defense and wipe policy are separate questions.
Do V Rising servers wipe, and what do you lose?
Official-server resets clear land held by inactive users and create a fresh experience. When an official reset occurs, Stunlock’s support information says vampires, castles and other server data are deleted. Therefore, a character that has reached late-game progression on one official server is not a permanent investment if that server is scheduled to reset.
Private servers can establish their own reset policies. Some may advertise a cadence; others may be intended to persist until the owner decides otherwise. Read the owner’s wipe policy, ask whether the policy has changed before, and save any screenshots or rules you may need for a dispute. Do not assume that a private server follows official reset behavior.
Can you move a character from PvE to PvP?
No cross-server transfer should be expected. Progression is server-bound: characters, gear, castles and abilities do not transfer between servers. Moving from PvE to PvP normally means creating a new character and progressing again on the destination server. The same limitation applies when moving between two PvP servers or between private and official servers.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Practice combat without joining open-world PvP
Update 1.1 adds two ways for a PvE-oriented player to train against other people. Duels are one-on-one battles without gear risk. Castle arenas support custom 1v1, 2v2 or 4v4 fights. These activities let you test weapon abilities, spell combinations and movement against human opponents without exposing a main castle to an open-world raid environment.
Use them to answer practical questions before switching modes: Can your build pressure an opponent? Which defensive cooldowns are you wasting? Does your duo communicate well enough for a larger fight? Practice does not remove every PvP difference, but it provides information without requiring a new server commitment.
Official or private server?
Official servers
Official servers provide Stunlock’s published rules and code. Their reset behavior is part of the experience: inactive land is cleared and, at a reset, vampires, castles and other server data are deleted. Choose official when you want a standardized ruleset and a clearly defined ecosystem, while accepting that the world is not permanent.
Private servers
Private owners can alter rules, moderation and reset policies. This can produce a persistent world, a custom raid schedule or a group-size format that official servers do not offer. It also means the owner’s administration becomes part of your risk assessment. Check uptime expectations, administrator activity, dispute handling, password or whitelist requirements and the exact wipe policy.
Hosting considerations
Stunlock’s hosting guide documents the V Rising Dedicated Server application and names PocketHost as a rental and management option. Its PlayStation 5 FAQ lists PocketHost and GPORTAL among private-hosting providers that support PS5. Provider availability, regional support, pricing and program terms can change, so verify those details at the time you rent or join a server.
For a hosted V Rising server, Godlike.Host provides its own game panel, free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day with restore.
A practical server-selection checklist
- Decide what failure feels acceptable. If rebuilding a castle or losing a fight would end your interest, start with PvE or a PvP server that protects castles.
- Filter by group size. Select solo, duo or squad rules that match the people who will actually play.
- Record both damage settings. Write down
PlayerDamageModeandCastleDamageMode; do not rely on the headline mode. - Convert raid hours to your timezone. Check whether the vulnerable period overlaps with your normal sleep, work or school hours.
- Read the reset statement. Note whether the cadence is one, three, six months or another period, and whether the owner can change it.
- Read conduct and moderation rules. Find the reporting channel and the policy on harassment, exploits, griefing and offline attacks.
- Check population and activity. A technically suitable server may not deliver the social experience you want if few players are online.
- Confirm platform and region support. PS5 players should verify that the specific private host and region support their platform before investing time.
- Join briefly before building a major base. Test latency, time-zone fit, population and rule clarity before committing to a long progression cycle.
Troubleshooting does not determine PvP or PvE
Crashes, rubberbanding and connection problems can make either mode unpleasant, but they are technical issues rather than evidence that one ruleset is better. For PC problems, Stunlock’s guidance includes verifying game files, updating graphics drivers, reducing background threads and checking server configuration. Apply those checks before abandoning a mode you otherwise enjoy.

Platform note: PlayStation 5
V Rising has a PlayStation 5 version. If you plan to play on PS5, distinguish the game platform from the server mode: PS5 availability does not imply that every private server, host or region supports your setup. Confirm support with the specific server or provider before creating a long-term character. Physical-versus-digital stock and retail availability are not fixed server rules and should be checked separately.
A simple decision framework
Choose PvE if most of these statements are true
- My group’s main goal is bosses, crafting, exploration and castle building.
- We want to log in without checking an attack schedule.
- A destroyed castle would feel like wasted time rather than an exciting setback.
- At least one player is still learning movement, spells or resource routes.
- We want to practice against people through duels or arenas without open-world exposure.
Choose PvP if most of these statements are true
- We specifically want ambushes, territory disputes and human opponents.
- We can play during the server’s interaction or raid windows.
- Our group accepts that a fight, raid or wipe can erase substantial progress.
- We are prepared to adapt builds, routes and defenses to other players.
- We have read the clan-size, reset and moderation rules for the exact server.
If your answers are evenly split, begin on PvE, use duels or castle arenas to test combat and move to PvP only after you understand the systems. Because progress does not transfer, this is not a shortcut to preserve your character; it is a way to make the second start more informed.
Bottom line
PvE is the dependable recommendation for a first run, a relaxed co-op group or anyone who values a protected castle and flexible play schedule. PvP is the right choice when player conflict is the central attraction and your group can accept scheduled vulnerability, possible raids and server resets. The mode label is only the beginning: inspect player damage, castle damage, raid hours, group size, reset cadence and moderation before you create a character. If you want human combat without committing to an open-world raid server, Update 1.1’s risk-free duels and castle arenas provide the safest bridge.
