Unified threat management (UTM) means combining multiple network-security functions—such as firewalling, intrusion prevention, anti-malware, VPN, and web filtering—under one managed device or platform. FortiGate can perform a UTM role when configured with the relevant protections; Sophos Firewall is the current Sophos product family, distinct from the legacy Sophos UTM line. Neither product is a universal winner: the right fit depends on the exact appliance, subscriptions, inspection settings, workload, and operating environment.
What does unified threat management mean?
UTM describes a consolidation approach: several security capabilities are delivered and managed together. Fortinet’s UTM overview lists functions including antivirus, content filtering, email and web filtering, and anti-spam; its broader discussion also covers intrusion prevention (IPS), VPN, and data-loss prevention (DLP).

There is no universal checklist that every product labeled UTM must satisfy. The modules available, how they are configured, and the protection they provide depend on the product, licensing, software release, and appliance capacity. UTM and next-generation firewall (NGFW) are overlapping descriptions, not mutually exclusive categories. Fortinet explains that a FortiGate NGFW can serve a UTM role when the relevant protective features are enabled.

FortiGate is an NGFW product family that can provide UTM functions. In FortiOS, administrators apply security profiles to firewall policies; those policies and the inspection configuration determine how traffic is handled. Simply owning a FortiGate does not mean every security feature is active.
#1 Best Overall
- Next-generation firewall for small office and branch security with NGFW, IPS, and web filtering built in
- Secure SD-WAN improves cloud and SaaS performance while maintaining consistent security policy
- Deep visibility with SSL inspection and application control to identify and govern encrypted traffic
- Simple deployment and centralized management via FortiGate Cloud or FortiManager
- Seamless integration with FortiSwitch and FortiAP for a unified, secure wired and wireless network
Fortinet’s FortiOS 7.4.6 inspection-mode documentation describes differences between flow-based and proxy-based inspection, and notes limitations on some low-memory models. Confirm that the intended features, inspection mode, appliance model, and software release work together before deployment.
Is Sophos UTM the same as Sophos Firewall?
No. Sophos UTM and Sophos Firewall are distinct product generations. Sophos presents Sophos Firewall as the migration destination for UTM customers; its current hardware family is XGS, and its product messaging highlights Xstream architecture, encrypted-threat detection, built-in network detection and response (NDR), Active Threat Response, Synchronized Security, and Sophos Fusion cloud management.

What is the difference between FortiGate and Sophos Firewall?
Both product families can consolidate network-security functions, but the comparison only becomes useful when it is narrowed to specific models, licenses, software releases, and deployment configurations. Fortinet’s May 2026 FortiGate Product Matrix publishes separate firewall, IPS, NGFW, and threat-protection throughput measures by model. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent head-to-head test results.
| Comparison area | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Inspected throughput and capacity | Compare threat-protection or NGFW throughput under equivalent settings, rather than comparing a basic firewall figure with a fully inspected figure. Check traffic mix, TLS inspection, enabled profiles, concurrent sessions, and VPN load. | Inspection features consume resources; a headline firewall throughput number does not establish the speed of a configured security workload. |
| Feature scope and configuration | List the needed anti-malware, IPS, web filtering, application control, sandboxing, VPN, DLP, and response functions. Verify licensing and model and release support for each. | Available features and inspection behavior vary by configuration and appliance capacity. |
| Operations and integrations | Assess existing endpoint and email tools, identity systems, central management, logging, reporting, and threat-response workflows. | Integrations can affect daily operations and may have licensing or deployment requirements. Sophos documents integrations across its product family; validate them against the actual environment. |
| Deployment and lifecycle | Check interfaces, high availability, branch rollout, migration effort, support term, updates, and operator skills. | Migration and ongoing administration are part of the practical fit, not just appliance specifications. |
| Total cost | Request like-for-like local quotes covering hardware, security subscriptions, support, renewals, and professional services. | Comparable current regional prices are not established here, and a hardware-only price would not represent total cost. |
How do I compare firewall throughput with threat protection enabled?
- Choose the exact appliances and software releases. A family-level comparison can hide differences in interfaces, memory, and supported features.
- Define the same security workload. Specify which protections are enabled, whether TLS inspection is used, the traffic mix, VPN load, and expected concurrent sessions.
- Match the metric to the workload. Compare threat-protection or NGFW figures with equivalent figures, not one vendor’s basic firewall throughput against another’s inspected-traffic result.
- Read the test notes. Record each figure’s model, metric, traffic mix, and manufacturer caveats. Fortinet’s matrix separates multiple throughput measures; obtain equivalent Sophos model data before drawing a numerical conclusion.
- Validate against the live environment. Use a deployment-relevant evaluation where possible, since published specifications do not establish performance for every network or configuration.
Which firewall is better for a small business?
There is no evidence here for a categorical winner. A small business should select the appliance and subscription configuration that meets its inspected-throughput needs, required features, support expectations, and operating capacity—not simply the model with the largest headline firewall number.

Neither vendor’s product descriptions establish independent superiority in security or speed. A defensible choice comes from matching a named model and configuration to the organization’s real workload and operational needs.
