Utah’s labor rules depend on the issue, the worker’s age and whether federal law also applies. The state lists a $7.25 hourly minimum wage, but federal overtime protections may still cover Utah workers, and adult meal breaks generally are not required. Here is how to check the rules for pay, final wages, leave, discrimination complaints and workers under 18.
What is the minimum wage in Utah?
The Utah Labor Commission lists the state minimum wage as $7.25 per hour. It also lists a tipped cash wage of $2.13 per hour when tips bring the worker’s total pay to at least the applicable minimum wage. For minors under 18, the state page describes a limited $4.25 training wage during the first 90 days of employment. These are figures published on the state’s wage page; check current state and federal coverage, exceptions and requirements before applying them to a particular job. See the Utah Labor Commission wage-claim information.

Utah’s description of “hours employed” includes time an employer requires a worker to work, remain on the premises ready to work, be on duty or at a prescribed workplace, and attend required meetings or training. Established rest periods are included. A meal period of at least 30 minutes can be excluded when the worker is relieved of all responsibilities.

Utah has no state overtime law, according to the Labor Commission. That does not mean Utah workers are categorically excluded from overtime: the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) may require overtime pay for covered, nonexempt workers. Coverage and exemptions depend on the worker and job, so check the U.S. Department of Labor’s overtime guidance for an individual situation.

Does Utah require lunch or rest breaks?
Utah generally does not require employers to provide meal or rest breaks to adult workers. If an employer offers breaks, whether time must be paid depends on what the worker is required to do and applicable rules. Required training time is compensable under the state agency’s summary; established rest periods count as hours employed, while a qualifying duty-free meal period of at least 30 minutes may be excluded.
Workers under 18 have separate meal, rest and scheduling protections. The state says a minor’s meal period of at least 30 minutes must begin no later than five hours into a shift. Exact limits depend on age, school schedule, work and applicable federal requirements; consult the state minor-worker information and the U.S. Department of Labor’s child-labor guidance.

When is my final paycheck due in Utah?
The Utah Labor Commission says that when an employer separates a worker, wages are due immediately and payable within 24 hours, subject to an exception for state employees. For many workers who resign without a definite-term written contract, wages are due on the next regular payday. The agency notes possible exceptions, including some commission earnings, so the timing is not identical for every worker or compensation arrangement. Review the state’s wage-claim page if a final payment is late or disputed.
Does Utah require paid sick leave, vacation or severance?
Utah generally does not require private employers to provide vacation, holiday pay, sick leave or severance. If an employer adopts a policy or practice providing a benefit, the Labor Commission says it should be followed in a nondiscriminatory manner. A contract, employer policy, federal law or special coverage may affect a particular worker’s rights; the general rule does not resolve every leave situation.

How do I pursue unpaid wages?
The Labor Commission Wage Claim Unit administers Utah’s Payment of Wages Act, Minimum Wage Act, Employment of Minors Act and related administrative rules. A worker may be able to file a wage claim with the Commission or pursue an eligible claim in small-claims or state court. The agency warns that a worker cannot pursue both an agency wage claim and a court action for the same claim at the same time.
Before choosing a route, check the amount at issue, worker status, applicable deadline and current filing procedure. The Commission’s wage-claim information explains the agency process.
What counts as employment discrimination, and how long do I have to file?
The Utah Antidiscrimination Act prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, age 40 or older, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, pregnancy, childbirth or pregnancy-related conditions, according to the Utah Antidiscrimination and Labor Division (UALD). UALD also describes protections concerning reasonable workplace expression of religious and moral beliefs on equal terms with similar expression, and restrictions on adverse employment actions based on expressions of religious, political or personal belief outside work. Unfair treatment or favoritism alone does not necessarily constitute unlawful discrimination; the conduct must be assessed in relation to a protected basis and applicable law. See UALD’s employment discrimination information.

UALD describes a 180-day filing window measured from when a person learns of the last alleged discriminatory act. It says a charge filed after 180 days but before 300 days is sent to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) for investigation. The process may involve reviewing an intake questionnaire, preparing and signing a charge if requirements are met, and possible dual filing. Because deadlines and jurisdiction matter, contact UALD or the EEOC promptly rather than waiting.

What are the rules for minors working in Utah?
Utah has state restrictions on minors’ hours, schedules and work, including limits on hazardous occupations. Federal child-labor standards can be stricter; when federal rules apply, the stricter applicable requirement must be followed. State summaries give examples involving school-day hours and evening work for younger teens, but the exact rule depends on age, school schedule, task and authorization. Check the current Utah minor-worker rules alongside federal child-labor requirements before assigning work.
Which Utah agency handles a workplace problem?
The Utah Labor Commission includes multiple divisions. UALD handles wage and discrimination matters; Utah Occupational Safety and Health (UOSH) administers the Utah Occupational Safety and Health Act. The Commission homepage says an employer must report an accident within eight hours under the cited rule. That is an employer reporting obligation, not a worker filing deadline. For imminent danger, the agency directs callers to its listed phone numbers rather than its ordinary complaint form. Start with the Utah Labor Commission for division contacts and the right channel.
Which rule applies: Utah law or federal law?
Some workplace issues are governed by state law, some by federal law, and some by both. The Utah Labor Commission says employers should follow the stricter applicable standard when both laws govern. The practical starting points are:
