Apple wired EarPods turn the cable’s inline remote into a call, media, volume, and Siri control panel. Press the center button once to pause audio or answer a call, press it twice quickly to skip, press it three times quickly to go back, and hold it until the Siri tone to speak a request. The volume buttons change the iPhone’s listening level.
First identify what you own. EarPods are wired; AirPods are Bluetooth products with model-specific gestures. Connector type—USB-C, Lightning, or 3.5 mm—is the most common compatibility issue, and a physical adapter does not guarantee that a microphone or every remote command will work.

Identify your headphones and connector
| Headphone type | Connection | Typical issue |
|---|---|---|
| USB-C EarPods | USB-C port | Apple lists compatibility with USB-C iPhone models running iOS 17 or later. See Apple’s USB-C EarPods page. |
| Lightning EarPods | Lightning port | They do not plug directly into a USB-C iPhone. |
| 3.5-mm headphones | Headphone jack or audio adapter | Most recent iPhones need a compatible Lightning-to-3.5-mm or USB-C-to-3.5-mm adapter. |
| AirPods | Bluetooth | They must be paired and use gestures, stems, or a Digital Crown rather than an EarPods remote. |
| Third-party wired headset | USB-C, Lightning, or 3.5 mm | Audio may work even when volume, microphone, call, or Siri functions do not. |
To connect wired headphones, unlock the iPhone if needed, insert the connector fully, play audio, and check that sound comes from the headset instead of the speaker. Record a short Voice Memo to verify the inline microphone. USB-C is only a connector shape: an accessory must also implement USB audio and, where required, microphone and remote controls.

Apple documents the core controls in its iPhone User Guide. “Double” and “triple” mean quick presses; a slow sequence can be interpreted as separate commands.
#1 Best Overall
- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Answer and manage calls
Answer or end a call
When a cellular or FaceTime call rings through recognized EarPods, press the center button once. Press it once during the active call to hang up.
Handle call waiting
- Press the center button once when the second call arrives. The first call is placed on hold and the new call is answered.
- Press it again to switch back to the first call.
The inline button is not a universal substitute for the on-screen Phone controls. Declining a call, switching to speakerphone, merging calls, muting, and routing audio elsewhere may require the iPhone display. Third-party calling apps can assign remote commands differently from Apple’s Phone and FaceTime apps.

Use Siri through EarPods
- Press and hold the center or call button.
- Wait for the Siri tone.
- Release the button and speak.
You can say “Call Alex,” “Send a message to Sam,” “Set a timer for 10 minutes,” “Play my workout playlist,” “What is the weather?,” “Remind me to buy coffee,” or “Turn on Do Not Disturb.” Siri can handle calling, messaging, media, information, navigation, and compatible smart-home commands; availability varies by language, country, app, and account. See Apple’s Siri guide.
Apple says ordinary Siri requests require an internet connection. Siri must be enabled in Settings, and spoken responses and what can be done while the phone is locked depend on your settings. Apple documents EarPods activation even when the iPhone is locked, but personal-data actions or individual apps may still require unlocking. The activation procedure is described in Apple’s Siri instructions.

- LONG BATTERY LIFE — Get up to 5 hours of listening time on a single charge. And get up to 30 hours of total listening time using the case.*
Control music and video
Use one press to pause or resume, two quick presses for the next track, three quick presses for the previous track, and two quick presses followed by holding the second press to fast-forward. The volume buttons adjust system volume. Apple’s controls are the baseline for Music and Apple’s media apps; podcast, video, and other third-party apps can ignore or reinterpret some commands.
Use the inline microphone
A recognized headset microphone can carry cellular and FaceTime calls, Siri, dictation, Voice Memos, recordings in compatible apps, and voice chat. The iPhone normally selects it when the accessory is recognized, but app routing and accessory design can differ.

- Open Voice Memos.
- Record several seconds while speaking close to the inline microphone opening.
- Play the recording through the headset or speaker.
- If it is silent or distant, inspect the opening, connector, adapter, and the app’s microphone permission.
A wired microphone offers a direct connection, but that alone does not establish better noise cancellation or voice processing than a wireless headset.

Troubleshoot common problems
No sound
- Push the connector fully into the phone or adapter.
- Confirm that the connector matches the iPhone’s port and that a 3.5-mm adapter supports audio, not charging only.
- Raise volume and check the selected audio output.
- Try the headphones on another device.
- Check the iPhone port for lint or debris and restart the phone.
Buttons do not work
- Repeat double and triple presses quickly; holding the center button too briefly will not start Siri.
- Check whether the third-party headset follows Apple’s remote wiring.
- Make sure the adapter passes remote signals, not just audio.
- Try Apple’s Music or Phone app because another app may not support the command.
- Inspect the inline remote and cable for damage.
Siri does not activate
- Hold the center button until the tone.
- Verify Siri is enabled and test it with the iPhone’s side or Home button.
- Confirm an internet connection.
- Test another compatible headset or iPhone.
- Check that the connector is recognized and the microphone is unobstructed.
The caller cannot hear you
- Speak toward the inline microphone and clear lint from its opening.
- Check whether Voice Memos also records poorly; if it does, suspect the headset or adapter.
- For a third-party calling app, allow microphone access in Settings.
- Confirm that the iPhone has selected the headset rather than another input.
USB-C headset fits but behaves incorrectly
Physical fit does not prove USB audio, microphone, or remote compatibility. Use a headset explicitly identified for USB-C audio and iPhone controls; Apple’s own compatibility details are on its USB-C EarPods page.

How AirPods differ
AirPods are wireless and pair through Bluetooth, as explained in Apple’s pairing guide. They do not use the wired EarPods center-button system.
| AirPods family | Typical control method |
|---|---|
| AirPods 1 and 2 | Configurable double-tap |
| Newer AirPods | Stem presses or model-specific gestures |
| AirPods Max | Digital Crown and listening-mode button |
Depending on model and settings, AirPods can answer calls, activate Siri, control playback, and support head gestures for accepting or declining calls when Announce Calls and Announce Notifications are enabled. Apple’s control details are in its AirPods guide.
