Using Technology to Fight Distraction and Improve Focus

The right focus tool depends on what distracts you: incoming alerts, habitual app checking or broad internet access. Start with a targeted change and preserve essential communication.

Start with the smallest change that addresses your main distraction: silence nonessential alerts, add a pause before opening a tempting app, or schedule a period offline. These tools can make focused work easier, but they are aids—not guaranteed cures. Keep essential contacts reachable and adjust the setup to your communication needs.

Choose a tool for the kind of distraction you have

Different tools target different interruptions. Muting alerts will not necessarily stop habitual app checking, and blocking internet access may be too restrictive if you need to stay reachable.

Approach Targets How restrictive it is Useful when
Notification controls Incoming alerts Low to moderate; selected apps or contacts can remain allowed Messages and alerts keep breaking concentration, but you still need some communication.
App limits or blocking Use of selected apps Moderate to high, depending on whether the limit can be dismissed You tend to open particular apps during work.
App-opening friction Automatic attempts to open selected apps Low; a prompt or brief wait gives you a chance to reconsider You want to interrupt a checking habit without blocking the app outright.
Timed offline interval Access to the phone or internet during a planned work period Variable; you can put the phone away or use a broader block You can work without checking the phone for a defined stretch.
Mobile-internet blocking Broad access to mobile internet High You are willing to test a more restrictive, scheduled intervention and can plan around being offline.

Identify whether the problem is incoming alerts, automatic checking, or broad online access. Then try the least restrictive option likely to help. Review whether work is becoming more continuous without cutting off communication you need.

Reduce interruptions without becoming unreachable

A one-workday field experiment found that people instructed to disable notifications as far as possible experienced fewer notification-caused interruptions. The study authors reported improved performance and reduced strain through the reduction in interruptions. Effects varied with participants’ fear of missing out and perceived pressure to respond, so the result does not mean everyone should shut off every alert. Read the field experiment.

Try a focused notification setup for one work block:

  1. Mute nonessential apps for the block, using your device’s focus or do-not-disturb controls.
  2. Allow calls or messages from people who may need to reach you urgently, if your device supports exceptions.
  3. Tell colleagues when you will check messages if your team expects quick replies.
  4. After the block, check whether fewer alerts interrupted you and whether anything important was missed. Adjust the allowed contacts or apps accordingly.

This approach works best when the alert itself is the interruption. If you still pick up the phone to check apps, add a separate limit or pause rather than making notification controls do a different job.

Add friction to habitual app opening

When you open an app automatically, a short pause can create a moment to choose whether you actually want to continue. In a six-week field experiment, the one sec intervention used a deliberation prompt and brief wait, with an option to abandon the opening attempt. The study reported that participants’ actual openings of target apps decreased by 57% after six weeks. That result applies to the study’s participants and selected apps; it is not a typical or guaranteed result for app blockers generally. Read the one sec study.

Use an app-opening pause for the specific apps you tend to open without intending to. A prompt that is easy to dismiss may be a better fit than a hard block when you still use those apps for legitimate reasons. If the pause is not changing your behavior, consider a firmer app limit or moving the app off your home screen.

Use a timer for a planned offline interval

Timer-based focus periods give a work session a clear beginning and end. A review of digital well-being apps identifies Pomodoro-style timers as a way to support offline focus periods; it does not establish that a physical timer works better than a phone timer. Read the review of digital well-being app functions.

  1. Choose a work interval that fits the task and your need to stay reachable.
  2. Set a timer, then silence nonessential alerts.
  3. Put the phone out of reach if seeing it prompts checking.
  4. When the timer ends, take a planned break and check messages you deferred.

If using your phone as a timer invites more checking, use a separate timer or another way to keep time. That is a practical way to reduce temptation, not evidence that physical timers are more effective.

Consider broad mobile-internet blocking only if narrower changes are not enough

A 2025 study examined a two-week intervention that blocked mobile internet. In the intervention group, authors reported average daily screen time falling from 314 minutes at baseline to 161 minutes at the end of the intervention, then rising to 265 minutes at follow-up. They also reported improvements in objectively measured sustained attention, mental health, and subjective well-being. The rebound and compliance figures matter: only 119 of the 467 people who initially committed to the intervention met the study’s compliance definition. These findings describe that study, not a promise that a two-week block will be easy or sustainable for everyone. Read the study.

Before trying a broad block, plan how you will handle maps, work communication, authentication, emergencies, and other essential phone tasks. A scheduled block may be impractical if those depend on mobile internet. You can instead test a narrower app-specific limit or a shorter offline interval.

App features are not equally effective

A 2023 multimethod study examined 13 apps designed to reduce phone use. It grouped features such as self-tracking, social tracking, goal setting, blocking, gamification, simplification, and assessment, and found effectiveness varied from weak to strong. The authors called for further evaluation, so the presence of a feature is not proof that an app will improve your focus. Read the study summary.

Choose by the behavior you want to change, not by the number of features. For example, a blocker may suit a particular distracting app, while self-tracking may help you notice when and how often you check. Test one change at a time so you can tell whether it helps your work.

Keep age and study scope in view

A 2023 randomized trial studied focus and social-comparison functions in 305 adolescents using Android phones. It found small effects, but those results should not be generalized automatically to adults or users of other devices. Read the trial summary.

A practical way to test your setup

  1. Name the distraction: note whether work is interrupted by alerts, a habit of opening specific apps, or unrestricted internet access.
  2. Pick one intervention: start with notification controls for alerts, app friction or limits for habitual checking, or a timer for a defined offline interval.
  3. Protect necessary communication: allow urgent contacts and decide when you will check nonurgent messages.
  4. Review the outcome: after several work sessions, ask whether interruptions fell, whether you stayed on task more easily, and whether the setup blocked anything you needed.
  5. Adjust rather than escalate automatically: keep a change that helps; modify or replace one that creates too much friction or is hard to maintain.
