Platypus is a Linux host-management project, not a pentesting-specific command-and-control product. In an authorized assessment or lab, its agent/server design can provide interactive shell sessions, file handling and network tunnels on machines you are permitted to manage. The project is WangYihang’s Platypus repository; other projects use the same name.
What Platypus does—and what it does not claim to be
The repository describes Platypus as “A host management hub for fleets of Linux machines.” That framing matters: it presents a tool for managing Linux hosts, not a product built specifically for penetration testing or unauthorized access. For an assessment, use it only on systems you own or are explicitly authorized to manage.

How its agent/server architecture works
Platypus has three components. The server provides daemon, control and API functions; an agent runs on each managed host and connects back to the server; and Platypus Desktop is a standalone client. The server is described as an API, not an embedded web UI.

- platypus-server: Runs the management and API services.
- platypus-agent: Runs on a managed Linux host and dials back to the server. Agent communications use TLS and Protocol Buffers (protobuf).
- platypus-desktop: A standalone client for interacting with the system.
What you can do with a managed host
The project lists these management functions:
- Open interactive shell sessions, streamed over WebSocket.
- Read and write files in chunks, and upload or download files.
- Forward local and remote ports, or create dynamic SOCKS5 tunnels.
- Use the REST API, which authenticates with bearer tokens, or the Python SDK.
These capabilities can be useful during an authorized assessment, but their presence does not make a deployment safe by default. The operator remains responsible for access control, network exposure, credentials and key storage.
Deployment options and enrollment
The official README documents Docker Compose, builds from source and release-binary deployment. It also lists build prerequisites; consult the current repository instructions for the applicable versions and setup steps, since compiler and tool requirements can change.

For agent enrollment, the README directs operators to generate an installer command through the UI and describes use of a project CA and single-use credentials. Follow the current official instructions rather than reusing an old command. Run enrollment only on a host you own or are authorized to assess.

The project documents a single-instance deployment model. It warns against running multiple server replicas against one database because token revocation is not supported across processes. Its documented scaling shape is vertical scaling with a standby, rather than multiple active replicas.

For production protection of the CA private key, the README documents PLATYPUS_CA_KEK. Its development fallback stores the key and encrypted data on the same volume, which does not provide the separation expected for production key management. These are project-documented operational caveats, not the findings of an independent security audit. Review the repository’s current deployment guidance before exposing a server or enrolling agents.
License and project identity
The repository identifies Platypus as licensed under LGPL-3.0. Confirm the license and deployment details in the official WangYihang/Platypus repository before adopting it; similarly named projects are not interchangeable.
