Yes, you may be able to use pfSense with Optimum Fiber, but whether it can replace the gateway’s routing depends on the exact Fiber Gateway and your account. Optimum’s public installation information describes a Fiber Gateway but does not establish a universal bridge-mode or bring-your-own-router procedure. Confirm the supported handoff with Optimum before changing equipment or entering WAN settings.
Identify the equipment before configuring pfSense
Optimum says its Fiber installation replaces the previous modem and router with a Fiber Gateway. That does not establish that every installation has a separate, customer-accessible ONT and a conventional router. Record the gateway’s exact model and determine whether the fiber terminates in a separate ONT or in the gateway itself. See Optimum’s Fiber installation information.

Confirm the handoff Optimum supports for your gateway
Ask Optimum whether your specific gateway and account support bridge mode or another customer-router configuration. Also confirm which gateway LAN port to use, whether Optimum must enable a setting, and whether Optimum TV or phone equipment needs the gateway to remain connected. These are questions for the provider: the public information available does not give a universal procedure or establish that every gateway supports bridging.

Customer discussions describe different bridge-mode experiences across gateway generations, but those reports are anecdotal and do not confirm current support for your model. Do not treat them as a setup guide or a guarantee.
Choose between two possible network layouts
Use this as a decision framework only after Optimum confirms which arrangements are supported for your equipment. A bridged handoff is not established as universally available.

Netgate documents WAN options such as DHCP and PPPoE, and says the selected configuration must match the ISP’s requirements. The Optimum information available here does not specify a WAN type, login credentials, VLAN ID, or authentication method for every gateway and account. Ask Optimum for the requirements for your handoff, then configure pfSense accordingly. See Netgate’s interface configuration documentation.

Connect a LAN and check link speeds
After the WAN handoff is working, connect pfSense’s LAN interface to an access point or switch for your home network. pfSense needs an internal interface as well as a WAN interface; Netgate documents assigning physical and virtual interfaces in its interface documentation.
If you subscribe to multi-gig service, check the full wired path rather than just the internet plan. Optimum’s guidance calls for Cat 6 or better Ethernet, a switch with a 10Gb port, and a 2.5Gb or 10Gb network adapter or built-in PCI card. A pfSense appliance with only 1Gb ports can constrain wired throughput even when the service is faster; actual performance depends on the equipment and configuration. See Optimum’s Fiber guidance.

Set expectations for support
The Optimum information cited here describes its gateway and installation, but does not define whether support will troubleshoot a third-party pfSense configuration. Keep the gateway details and any provider handoff instructions available, and ask Optimum which parts of the connection it will support before making changes.
