Yes. For one or a few known Samba shares, you can configure a CIFS mount in /etc/fstab and run it without the standalone autofs service. On a systemd-based Linux system, you can also add x-systemd.automount so the share is mounted when its local mount path is first accessed, rather than connecting at boot. Use autofs when its maps and indirect, direct, or offset mount points solve a genuine need to manage many or changing paths.
Choose the mount method that fits your shares
| Situation | Suitable approach | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| One or a few fixed shares | Regular CIFS entry in /etc/fstab |
The share is managed through the standard mount configuration; systemd reads fstab and generates mount units. |
| A fixed share that should connect only when used | fstab with x-systemd.automount |
The configured path triggers the actual mount on first access. This uses systemd automounting, not the standalone autofs service. |
| Many or dynamically selected mount paths | autofs | Its maps support direct, indirect, and offset mount arrangements, which can be more suitable than listing every CIFS path in fstab. |
These approaches do not change how the SMB server authenticates the client: CIFS credentials and mount options still apply. The best choice is about how mount locations are configured and when connections are activated, not a universal performance or reliability ranking.

Configure a known share in fstab
First confirm the server’s UNC path, such as //server/share, and choose a local mount directory. Create a credentials file rather than putting a password directly in fstab or in a command that may be exposed through shell history or process listings.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Create the mount point. For example, create
/mnt/shareand ensure the intended users can access the local directory. - Create a credentials file. For example,
/etc/samba/credentials-sharecan containusername=YOUR_USERNAMEandpassword=YOUR_PASSWORD, each on its own line. Use the format documented for your installed CIFS utilities. - Restrict access to the credentials file. Set ownership and permissions so only the appropriate privileged account can read it; a common starting point is root ownership and mode
600. Check local policy and themount.cifsmanual before deployment. - Add the CIFS entry to
/etc/fstab. A basic example is//server/share /mnt/share cifs credentials=/etc/samba/credentials-share 0 0. Replace the server, share, mount point, and credentials path with your actual values. - Test before relying on it at boot. Use the system’s mount tools to test the fstab entry, then confirm the mounted contents and inspect system logs if it fails. Avoid assuming that an example’s protocol version or ownership settings suit your server.
Depending on how local users should see file ownership and permissions, you may need CIFS options such as uid, gid, or mode settings. These affect the client-side presentation of files; they do not grant permissions on the server. Check the installed mount.cifs documentation and the server’s supported SMB protocol rather than copying an arbitrary vers= value.

- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Defer the connection until first access
If you want the path configured but do not want the share mounted until something uses it, retain the fstab entry and add systemd’s x-systemd.automount option to its CIFS options. For example, the options field could begin credentials=/etc/samba/credentials-share,x-systemd.automount. With this arrangement, the automount watches the local path and access to it triggers the actual CIFS mount.
An optional systemd idle-timeout setting can request unmounting after a period without use. Timeout behavior and accepted options depend on the systemd version and generated units, so verify them on the target distribution. Automounting delays activation; it does not make the remote share available offline or change its authentication requirements.

Network ordering and common failure checks
On systemd systems, network mounts receive network-related ordering behavior. The _netdev option can force a mount to be treated as network-dependent when the filesystem type does not already identify it that way; it is not automatically necessary for every CIFS entry. Check the generated mount behavior and local systemd documentation if startup ordering is a problem.
- Mount fails immediately: Check the UNC path, local directory, credentials-file path, and CIFS options; then consult the mount error and system logs.
- Authentication fails: Verify the username and password format and the account’s server-side access. Keep credentials out of fstab itself.
- Files appear with unexpected ownership: Review client-side ownership and permission options in the local
mount.cifsmanual, alongside server-side permissions. - Mount works manually but not during startup: Check systemd network ordering and whether
_netdevis appropriate for the configuration. - The list of shares or paths keeps growing: Consider whether autofs maps better represent the way users select mount locations than an increasingly long fstab list.
When autofs is the better fit
autofs combines a kernel interface with a user-space automount program and maps. That design is useful when access to a path should select among a collection of mounts or when you need direct, indirect, or offset mount arrangements. For a single fixed share, those additional map and daemon configuration steps may add complexity without solving a problem fstab does not already handle.

Autofs does not eliminate CIFS authentication or server requirements. Configure the CIFS options through the relevant map or helper, and follow the autofs package documentation for the specific Linux distribution: map syntax and service setup are distribution-specific.

These examples describe Linux CIFS mounts and systemd-based systems. fstab processing, systemd automount options, network ordering, and CIFS utility behavior can vary with distribution, systemd, kernel, and cifs-utils versions. The systemd automount option is not a general substitute for autofs on systems that do not use systemd.
