Some refurbishers consider eligible repairable units with dead batteries; acceptance and value depend on the equipment. To estimate yours, identify the unit and compare an as-is offer with the net cost and potential proceeds of replacing its battery.
What determines the value of a used UPS?
The UPS itself matters as much as its battery. Buyers may consider the exact model and generation, capacity, age, whether the electronics work, physical condition, included parts, quantity, and the cost of shipping or pickup. Eaton Service Canada and APC Service Canada describe these factors in their buyback information; their programs are examples, not proof that every buyer will accept a similar unit.

Eaton Service Canada says a dead battery does not by itself disqualify a unit from refurbishment, because batteries are replaced during that process. APC Service Canada likewise describes evaluating some repairable units with dead or aged batteries. Both statements apply to units that meet the providers’ criteria, not to every UPS or market.

What information should you gather before asking for an offer?
Record the details buyers need to identify the hardware and judge its condition:
- Manufacturer, exact model, and approximate age
- Capacity in VA and watts, if shown on the label
- Battery type or cartridge number, if listed
- Whether the UPS powers on, and any fault lights or error indications
- Physical condition and whether the battery is the only known problem
- Included rails, modules, network cards, cables, and other accessories
- Quantity and your location, including whether shipping or pickup is practical
Photograph the nameplate, front, rear, and any visible damage. These details align with information requested or cited by the Canadian buyback services.

How to compare selling, replacing the battery, and recycling
Sell it as-is
Ask buyers that handle your UPS’s class and model whether they will consider it with a dead battery. State the battery condition plainly and provide the details and photos above. Ask whether an offer is for a working unit, repair, parts recovery, or recycling, and account for shipping or pickup. Eaton Service Canada describes working units as setting its offer ceiling and parts-recovery units as its floor; that is the provider’s framing, not a universal pricing formula.
Replace the battery before selling or keeping it
First identify the exact compatible battery or cartridge for your model. APC provides a replacement battery selector and information about replacement battery cartridges. Do not assume a generic battery will fit or work safely. Get a current price for the confirmed part, then consider any diagnosis or repair costs and the time and expense of selling the unit.

Compare the as-is offer with likely proceeds after repair, subtracting the battery, diagnosis or labor, selling fees, and shipping or pickup. The result depends on your unit and actual offers; the sources do not provide a universal resale formula or the battery cost for an unspecified model.
Recycle it if sale or repair does not make sense
Follow the manufacturer’s battery-recycling instructions or contact an appropriate local collection point. APC’s US FAQ describes return-label eligibility for official cartridges under specified conditions, while Eaton describes North American collection options for small single-phase and larger three-phase batteries. Does APC TradeUPS still accept old UPS units?
No. APC Canada says its TradeUPS program ended on August 31, 2025, and points readers to refresh and recycling options instead. Do not count on TradeUPS as a current buyback offer. APC Canada’s TradeUPS notice
