The answer depends on the specific listing and its checkout total. In a price report published October 6, 2026, Tom’s Hardware found refurbished and new listings at sharply different prices, with some new offers out of stock. Check current stock and terms before deciding.
What the reported prices say—and what they don’t
Tom’s Hardware reported on October 6, 2026, that GameStop had raised its refurbished PS5 Pro price to $1,399.99. It also reported new consoles listed at $899.99 at Sony, GameStop, and Target, though those offers were out of stock, while new listings at Best Buy and Walmart were $1,496.01 and $1,554.99, respectively. The report also noted sealed marketplace listings around $1,300 or more. These were observations at the time of publication, not guaranteed live offers or a complete market survey. At those reported prices, the $1,399.99 refurbished GameStop listing was a poor value against a $899.99 new listing if that new offer became available. Against the higher-priced in-stock retail listings, the refurbished console was nominally cheaper—but the difference has to compensate for the used unit’s condition, usage history, and potentially weaker coverage. A lower sticker price alone does not make a used PS5 Pro the better deal.

How to compare a specific used listing with a new one
Compare the total cost and the protection you actually receive, not just the headline price. Use the same region and currency, and include tax, shipping, and mandatory fees in both totals.
- Check the final checkout price. Verify that both consoles are in stock and compare their totals after tax, shipping, and required fees.
- Confirm exactly what “used” means. Look for disclosed condition, testing, repairs, damage, unusual noise, overheating, and any missing parts. Ask the seller questions that the listing does not answer.
- Check the package contents. Sony said the PS5 Pro package includes a 2 TB SSD and a DualSense wireless controller. For a used unit, confirm that the controller, power lead, and every advertised item are included and working; do not assume the original package is intact.
- Read the seller’s return terms for that exact listing. Find the return window, what qualifies for a refund, and who pays return shipping. A general policy or terms shown on another product page may not apply.
- Check warranty evidence. Ask for the original purchase receipt and confirm with Sony whether any manufacturer coverage remains. Treat a retailer warranty or optional protection plan as separate, and read its duration and exclusions.
- Assess whether you can get recourse if it fails. Prefer a seller that offers credible testing, a usable return option, or an in-person test where available.
If the used listing has unclear condition, missing accessories, weak returns, or no usable proof of purchase, choose new when the price premium is modest. Consider used or refurbished when the discount is meaningful and the seller provides credible testing and recourse. This is a value judgment based on the available warranty and seller terms, not a claim that either option has a particular failure rate.

In the United States and Canada, Sony’s limited PS5 hardware warranty covers the original purchaser for one year from the original purchase date. Sony requires valid proof of purchase showing that date for warranty service. A used buyer should not assume the console receives a fresh one-year warranty: ask for the original receipt and check remaining eligibility with Sony. For covered defects, Sony may repair the console or replace it with a factory-recertified product, at Sony’s option. Sony’s PS5 warranty terms

Sony’s manufacturer warranty is distinct from a retailer’s return window, a seller’s warranty, or an optional protection plan. GameStop’s product page has displayed a seven-day money-back guarantee and a general 30-day return statement, but those terms should not be assumed to apply to every used listing or remain current. Is the PS5 Pro upgrade itself worth choosing?
The performance case for a PS5 Pro applies whether the console is new or used. In its 2024 announcement, Sony said the Pro has 67% more GPU compute units and memory 28% faster than the then-current standard PS5, enabling up to 45% faster gameplay rendering. Sony also highlighted advanced ray tracing and AI-driven PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). Those are Sony’s published comparisons, not a guarantee of the same improvement in every game.
Sony says PS5 Pro-enhanced features are available only in select games and vary by game. If the games you play do not use the enhancements, those features may matter less to your purchase decision.
