The open python-senior-teacher/SKILL.md template gives an AI instructions for explaining Python, reviewing code, and coaching through errors. Its defining teaching choice is to offer hints and questions before a full solution, while allowing a direct answer when the learner explicitly asks for one. It is a reusable instruction file—not a Python application or a packaged tutoring product.
What the Python educator template contains
Carl Henderson shared the template in a DEV Community article published September 26, 2026. He describes its goal as making an AI “less like an automated Stack Overflow and more like an authentic, patient Senior Software Engineer and CS Professor.” That is the intended teaching style, not a claim that the AI has professional credentials.

The file brings several kinds of help under one set of instructions:
- Concept explanations: start with an analogy, show a small Python example, and briefly explain relevant internals such as CPython behavior.
- Guided problem-solving: outline the concept, offer a hint or code skeleton, and finish with a check question. The template allows a complete solution when the learner explicitly requests one.
- Code review: use L.I.F.T.—Logic and Functionality, Idiomatic Python, Formatting and Standards, and Time and Space Complexity—and identify something done well before suggesting refinements.
- Traceback coaching: identify the relevant line, explain the exception in plain language, and ask a targeted question that helps the learner find the cause.
- Style guidance: encourage PEP 8, type hints, and appropriate idioms such as
enumerate(),zip(), safe dictionary access, context managers, and generators.
It also includes a scenario matrix for explanations, debugging, review, exercises, and direct-answer requests, plus analogies for mutability, dunder methods, iterables and iterators, and decorators. Read Henderson’s article and template on DEV Community.

Choose where to use the instructions
Henderson describes two ways to apply the file. The practical choice is whether you want the instructions available through a web LLM’s prompt settings or stored alongside a software project for an agent framework to use.
| Route | How the article describes setup | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Web LLM | Copy the prompt content into the service’s custom instructions or system prompt. | You want the tutor behavior attached to the web interface you already use. |
| Agent framework | Save the file as python-senior-teacher/SKILL.md in a project’s skills/ directory. |
You want the instructions stored with a project and your agent framework can load a SKILL.md file. |
The article names Claude Code, OpenClaw, Codex CLI, and Lumo AI as examples. Those are the author’s compatibility descriptions, not independently verified guarantees for every version or configuration. Check the documentation for the interface you use before relying on a particular file-loading path.

How to use the template without losing control of the answer
- Pick a route. Use custom instructions or a system prompt for a web LLM, or place the file in the project’s skills directory if your agent framework supports that setup.
- Ask for the kind of help you need. For a concept, request an explanation and example. For a bug, include the traceback and relevant code. For feedback, ask for a L.I.F.T. review.
- Work through the hint when learning is the goal. Try the proposed reasoning or skeleton, then answer the tutor’s check question. If you need to finish a task or compare approaches, explicitly ask for the complete solution.
- Check technical recommendations against your context. Python conventions and idioms depend on the project, supported Python version, and constraints; treat the AI’s suggestions as reviewable advice, not automatic requirements.
What the template does—and what it does not establish
Henderson reports testing the template with Lumo AI and local AI agents and describes the results as “fantastic.” That is an author-reported impression. The article does not give measured learning gains, a comparison group, or independent validation, so it does not establish that the template improves learning outcomes.

Treat those concepts as rationale for the design rather than evidence of its effectiveness. The opening reference to boot camps costing “£5,000+” is likewise not tied to a named study, organisation, or year-specific dataset; it should not be treated as a verified market statistic.
The template is most useful as a starting point for shaping an AI’s responses. You can adapt its teaching style and Python guidance to your goals, then judge whether its explanations and code suggestions are accurate for the task at hand.
