Use Java Selenium to Capture a Screenshot After Scrolling to the Bottom

Use Java Selenium to scroll to a page’s bottom and save a screenshot, with guidance for lazy-loaded content, iframes, and full-page capture limits.

Use Selenium’s JavascriptExecutor to scroll the current page to its bottom, then capture a screenshot with TakesScreenshot. This produces a screenshot of what the browser’s screenshot implementation captures at that point; scrolling to the bottom alone does not guarantee a stitched image of the entire document.

Capture the viewport after scrolling to the bottom

This Java example opens a page, scrolls the current document to its reported bottom, saves a PNG screenshot, and closes the browser even if capture or file saving fails.

public class ScreenshotAfterScroll {
    public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException {
        WebDriver driver = new ChromeDriver();
        try {
            driver.get("https://example.com");

            JavascriptExecutor js = (JavascriptExecutor) driver;
            js.executeScript("window.scrollTo(0, document.body.scrollHeight)");

            File screenshot = ((TakesScreenshot) driver)
                    .getScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE);
            Files.copy(screenshot.toPath(), Path.of("page-bottom.png"),
                    StandardCopyOption.REPLACE_EXISTING);
        } finally {
            driver.quit();
        }
    }
}

Replace https://example.com with the target page. Selenium’s documented Java pattern uses ((TakesScreenshot) driver).getScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE); the script runs in the currently selected frame or window. [Selenium WebDriver documentation] [JavascriptExecutor API]

The call to window.scrollTo is synchronous, but page rendering and asynchronous content loading may continue afterward. For a static page, capture immediately after scrolling. For a dynamic page, wait for a meaningful condition before requesting the screenshot.

#1 Best Overall

Decide whether you need a bottom-of-viewport image or a full-page image

  • Viewport at the bottom: the example scrolls down, then captures the browser’s screenshot at that position. It is useful when the goal is to see the content currently in view near the bottom.
  • One image of the entire document: do not assume that scrolling first makes TakesScreenshot stitch the page. Selenium’s screenshot API does not establish identical whole-document behavior across every browser and driver combination. Confirm the behavior with your browser, driver, and Selenium version; if you need a guaranteed full-page result, use a browser-supported full-page capture method and verify its limits.

Handle lazy-loaded pages

Some sites load or append content only as the browser approaches the bottom. A single jump to the document’s current height may miss later content. Scroll in increments, wait for the page to settle or for a known element to appear, then check whether the document has grown. Bound the loop so an endlessly expanding page cannot keep the test running indefinitely.

JavascriptExecutor js = (JavascriptExecutor) driver;
long previousHeight = 0;

for (int i = 0; i < 20; i++) {
    long height = ((Number) js.executeScript(
            "return document.body.scrollHeight")).longValue();
    if (height == previousHeight) {
        break;
    }
    previousHeight = height;
    js.executeScript("window.scrollTo(0, arguments[0])", height);
    Thread.sleep(500); // Prefer an explicit condition wait when available.
}

This illustrates the loop, not a universal lazy-loading solution. A fixed sleep can be too short on a slow page or unnecessarily long on a fast one. If the application exposes a reliable signal—such as a loading indicator disappearing or a known item appearing—wait for that condition instead. If height stops changing before the expected content appears, inspect the site’s load trigger and wait condition rather than increasing the loop indefinitely.

Scroll the correct frame

JavascriptExecutor runs in the currently selected browsing context. If the content you want is inside an iframe, switch into that frame before executing the scroll script; otherwise the script targets the parent document. After capturing or interacting with the frame, switch back to the default content if subsequent steps target the top-level page. See the Selenium JavascriptExecutor API.

Common problems and fixes

  • The screenshot shows the middle or top of the page. Confirm the scroll script ran in the intended window and frame. For content inside an iframe, switch to it first. If the page changes its height after the scroll, wait for the relevant content and scroll again.
  • The bottom content is missing. The site may load content incrementally. Use bounded incremental scrolling and wait for a page-specific condition before capturing.
  • The output is not a stitched full-page image. The code captures through the driver’s screenshot API; scrolling does not itself establish full-document stitching. Check the behavior of your specific browser and driver or use a supported full-page capture approach.
  • The image file is missing or stale. Ensure the process can write to the chosen path. The example copies to page-bottom.png in the process working directory and replaces an existing file.
  • The browser remains open after an error. Keep driver.quit() in a finally block so the session is closed when capture or saving throws an exception.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot from an application rather than a Selenium browser session, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. It accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does scrolling to the bottom make Selenium capture the whole page?

No. The driver screenshot API’s full-document behavior can vary by browser and driver, so verify your setup if you need a stitched image.

Why can a page still be loading after Selenium scrolls?

Scrolling can trigger lazy-loaded content. Wait for a relevant page condition and scroll again if the document grows.
