To use Grammarly in Google Docs, install its browser extension for Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge, then open a document and click the Grammarly button at the lower-right of the browser window. Review suggestions one at a time; you can accept, dismiss, or investigate each change rather than applying them automatically.
Before you start: choose a supported browser
Grammarly’s Google Docs workflow uses its browser extension. Grammarly lists Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge as supported browsers; its installation guidance does not support Opera or Brave. Use a current stable browser and operating-system version where possible. See Grammarly’s browser installation instructions for the current browser-specific steps.

Install and enable the extension
-
Open Grammarly’s extension installation page and select your browser.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Follow the browser’s installation flow. Grammarly’s instructions use “Add to Chrome” for Chrome, “Add to Firefox” for Firefox, and “Get” followed by “Add Extension” for Edge. Safari’s flow uses “Get” and then “Install.” The exact screens may vary as browser stores update.
-
If you use Safari, open Safari’s extension settings and enable Grammarly for Google Docs. Safari extensions are off for websites by default; you can allow Grammarly on Docs specifically or choose to allow it on every website.
Open Google Docs and bring up Grammarly
-
Sign in to your Grammarly account if prompted. Grammarly says an account carries settings across devices; you can create or sign in to one as part of setup. Open Google Docs and create a document or open an existing one.
-
Click the Grammarly button in the lower-right corner of the browser window to open its sidebar. Grammarly’s Google Docs support guide describes this as the way to access suggestions.

If you see an underline in the document, hover over the marked word or passage to inspect its suggestion card. Some correctness and style-guide suggestions appear inline rather than only in the sidebar.
Review suggestions without losing your meaning
Choose a suggestion card in the sidebar and click its proposed change to accept it. Use the explanation link on the card when you want more context. If the suggestion does not fit, use its menu to dismiss it or report it. For a correctly spelled name or unfamiliar term, you can add the word to your personal dictionary or dismiss the suggestion. Grammarly’s suggestion guide explains these controls.
Read the revised sentence in context before accepting a change. A suggestion is an option to consider, not proof that the original wording is wrong; only you can judge whether an edit preserves your intended meaning and voice.

In Safari, confirm that Grammarly is allowed for Google Docs in Safari’s extension settings.
-
Sign in if Grammarly prompts you, then click into the document’s text area. Grammarly’s browser guidance says its icon appears when you click into a text field; it also notes that Grammarly does not initialize in text areas shorter than 38 pixels. That general text-area note is not a Google Docs-specific diagnosis.
Grammarly says “Update required”
Follow the browser-specific update or reinstall steps in Grammarly’s extension update instructions. If your browser is managed by an employer or school, automatic extension updates may be controlled by the organization; ask its IT administrator to allow updates if needed.
You see a different logo or tab
If you activated Superhuman Go, its logo or tab may appear instead of the Grammarly one. The current Google Docs support guide also describes the Superhuman Go interface and sidebar behavior.

The desktop app and browser extension seem out of sync
Grammarly says using its Windows or Mac app turns the browser extension off by default, while the extension remains active in Google Docs. Check the extension’s status in the browser if you are troubleshooting a difference between apps. See Grammarly’s extension guide.
You need to work offline
Grammarly is cloud-based and is not available offline, according to its setup guide. Make sure you have an internet connection when you need Grammarly’s feedback.
