When an app doesn’t provide alternate icon art, iOS can’t “invent” a dark version automatically. In that case, you have two choices: accept the default icon, or use Shortcuts to place a custom icon on the Home Screen.

Prerequisites (iOS 18 and the things you need first)
- iPhone on iOS 18 (Settings > General > About > iOS Version).
- Icon files for the dark version (usually PNG, transparent background preferred).

- Background: transparent or intentionally dark.
- Resolution: higher is better (you can start with 1024×1024 and scale down).
Store the files somewhere easy to access—typically in Files (for example, in iCloud Drive) so you can select them during icon setup.
Step 2: Build a Shortcut that opens the app
- Open the Shortcuts app.
- Tap + (Create Shortcut).
- Tap Add Action.
- Search for and select Open App.
- Tap the app picker and choose the app you want (for example, YouTube, eBay, or another app).
Leave the shortcut action as-is for now. Next you’ll assign the icon that shows on the Home Screen.

- In your shortcut, tap the … (or the settings/options button) at the top right.
- Tap Details (wording can vary slightly, but you’re looking for the screen with the name and icon options).
- Tap Icon.
- Choose Choose Photo or Choose File (depending on what options your Shortcuts version shows).
- Select your dark-mode icon image.
- Tap Done.
You’ll now have a custom launcher that displays your icon artwork. The next step is placing it on the Home Screen.
Step 4: Add the shortcut to the Home Screen
- From the same shortcut details screen, tap Add to Home Screen.
- Enter a Home Screen Name (match the app name so it feels native).
- Confirm the icon preview looks correct.
- Tap Add.

Step 4.5: Hide the original app icon (optional, but usually necessary)

- Long-press the original app icon on the Home Screen.
- Select Remove App.
- Choose Remove from Home Screen (not Delete App).
This keeps the app installed while removing its default icon from your Home Screen.

Shortcuts can sometimes react to system appearance changes, so your Home Screen could swap between light and dark launchers. Whether it works on iOS 18 depends on what triggers your Shortcuts automation UI exposes.
If you see an Appearance trigger
- Open Shortcuts.
- Tap Automation at the bottom.
- Tap + > Create Personal Automation.
- Search for Appearance (or browse the trigger list for appearance-related options).
- Select the trigger that corresponds to Dark Mode turning on/off.
- Choose actions that swap which shortcuts are visible (commonly, you’ll create separate “light icon” and “dark icon” home-screen launchers and then control visibility if your iOS/Shortcuts options allow it).
- Save and confirm prompts.

Common Issues and Troubleshooting
Icon looks blurry or cropped
That usually comes from low-resolution art or images that don’t match iOS’s square icon framing. Re-export your icon as a crisp square PNG and try again.
- Start from a high-res source (example: 1024×1024).
- Use transparent padding only if the graphic’s edges aren’t being cut.
- Re-select the icon under Shortcuts > Details > Icon.
Tap opens the wrong app or doesn’t open at all
Double-check that your shortcut action is exactly Open App and that the chosen app is correct.
- Open Shortcuts.
- Open the shortcut you added to Home Screen.
- Confirm the action is still Open App.
- Confirm the app selection didn’t reset.
Automation won’t trigger when Dark Mode toggles

- Verify the trigger type you selected actually mentions Dark Mode.
- Re-check Automation settings after saving.
- If no appearance trigger exists, switch to the fallback approach (Home Screen pages or manual mode).
Home Screen layout keeps changing
Rebuilding shortcuts can shuffle icons if you add them in different sessions. If you care about layout, do your icon replacements in one focused run, then stop adding until everything is placed.

- Match names: Use the same Home Screen Name as the original app so it feels native.
- Keep a consistent icon style: Use the same padding, corner style, and contrast level across apps.

Does iOS 18 let me switch app icons based on Dark Mode automatically without Shortcuts?
