Claude in Chrome can read and interact with websites, including clicking, navigating, typing, and filling forms. WebMCP is a separate, experimental way for participating websites to expose structured actions to AI agents. You can use Claude’s browser extension without WebMCP; a site must specifically provide WebMCP tools before an agent can discover and call them.
How to use Claude in Chrome
Anthropic describes Claude in Chrome as an extension that lets Claude “read, click, and navigate websites alongside you.” Its help page, dated August 26, 2026, says the extension can also type and fill website forms. It is for Google Chrome; Anthropic says it is not supported on other Chromium-based browsers or mobile devices. See Anthropic’s setup and availability guide.

- Open Google Chrome and find Claude in Chrome in the Chrome Web Store.
- Add the extension, sign in to Claude, and grant the browser permissions it requests.
- Open the page you want Claude to work with, then use the extension to ask for a task. Review what it proposes and does, especially before it submits a form or changes information.
Anthropic’s August 26, 2026 help article lists Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise as eligible paid plans. Its side-panel and Cowork options have separate rollout conditions: the help page describes the side panel as beta; Cowork behavior is available on Max and Team, rolling out to Pro, and subject to enterprise-admin settings. Check Anthropic’s live guide for current access details.
Using the extension with Claude Desktop
For the desktop connector route, Anthropic’s instructions are to enable Claude in Chrome under Settings > Connectors, install the extension, and enable it for the conversation. Some features require the Claude Desktop app to be open and connected.

What WebMCP is—and what it is not
Chrome for Developers calls WebMCP “a proposed web standard to help you build and expose structured tools for AI agents.” It is a website-side capability, not another name for Claude in Chrome. A site can expose tools using an imperative JavaScript API or declarative annotations on HTML forms. An agent can discover the tools offered by a site it visits and use relevant ones; ordinary sites that do not expose WebMCP tools do not gain them just because Claude’s extension is installed. Read Chrome’s WebMCP overview.
Chrome’s documentation describes experimental access through an origin trial from Chrome 149, or local testing by enabling chrome://flags/#enable-webmcp-testing and relaunching Chrome. This is not a stable, universally enabled Chrome feature, and availability depends on the browser setup and the site.

How direct browser interaction differs from WebMCP
| Question | Claude interacting with page controls | WebMCP tools |
|---|---|---|
| What does the agent use? | It interprets the page and interacts with visible controls such as links, buttons, and forms. | It can discover and invoke structured actions that the site explicitly exposes. |
| What must the site do? | No WebMCP support is required for ordinary browser interaction. | The website must implement and expose relevant tools or annotated forms. |
| What is the availability caveat? | Claude in Chrome requires a supported Chrome setup and an eligible paid Claude plan. | WebMCP remains experimental in Chrome’s documentation; browser access and site support both matter. |
| What can make a task difficult? | The agent may need to infer what controls mean from page content and state. | Structured actions can reduce ambiguity, but complex applications may still need extra JavaScript or changes to how their state is managed. |
WebMCP does not guarantee that every task will be simpler or succeed. Chrome notes that complex applications may need additional JavaScript or state refactoring, and its overview also discusses limitations for headless use.
Is it safe to let Claude interact with your browser?
Browser agents process page content that may be untrusted, and their actions can affect real accounts and transactions. Anthropic advises reviewing its Claude in Chrome safety guidance. Its separate API documentation for browser use—not a complete specification of the Chrome extension—warns that web pages can contain instructions intended to manipulate an agent. It recommends browser isolation, URL restrictions, and human confirmation for consequential actions such as purchases, account changes, messages, or accepting terms. See Anthropic’s browser use tool documentation.

Chrome’s WebMCP security guidance asks developers to mark consequential tools so an agent or browser can request confirmation before execution. For example, a tool that books travel or transfers money should set consequentialHint: true. For tool output containing user-generated or externally sourced content, Chrome recommends untrustedContentHint. It also advises limiting cross-origin exposure, particularly for tools that read or write user data. These are recommendations for people building WebMCP tools, not a blanket guarantee that every site or agent implements them. See Chrome’s WebMCP tool security guidance.
- Stay present while the agent works on sensitive pages; inspect the page and the action before approving a consequential step.
- Use extra care with payments, bookings, account settings, messages, and legal or policy acceptances.
- Do not assume a site’s content is trustworthy just because it appears in the browser or is presented through a tool.
What to expect in practice
Claude in Chrome is the browser agent; WebMCP is an emerging way for websites to offer agents clearer, structured actions. The extension’s ordinary page interaction does not depend on WebMCP. WebMCP matters only where a site exposes relevant tools and the browser has the required experimental access. Chrome says the standard is intended to improve reliability and task completion, but its overview does not provide quantified results, so no success rate or time saving is established.
