How to connect Nintendo’s official N64 controller
- Charge the controller using its USB-C port.
- On the Switch, open the controller-pairing flow and follow the on-screen instructions to pair it. Nintendo’s setup guide explains the process.
- Launch Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online and use the controller there. Nintendo designed this controller for that software; other games may recognize some controls, but compatibility and features are not guaranteed.
The controller recreates the original N64 three-prong shape and includes rumble, replacing the original console’s optional Rumble Pak with built-in vibration. Nintendo describes its intended use in its controller overview and FAQ.

Do you need Nintendo Switch Online to buy it?
Nintendo’s published purchase rules say a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to purchase its classic controllers in the United States and Canada. The N64 game collection itself requires the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack tier; that is a separate requirement from the membership needed to buy the controller. Nintendo lists the controller at $49.99 USD or $64.99 CAD, with a limit of four controllers of the same type per Nintendo Account and gray as the listed color. When 8BitDo’s controller is a better fit
The 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller is a documented third-party choice for Switch 1 and Switch 2. 8BitDo lists Bluetooth 5.0/Bluetooth LE and wired USB connectivity, a Hall-effect joystick, and vibration support for Switch 1/2 N64 Online games. It also lists compatibility with Windows, Android, and Analogue 3D.

For Switch 2, update the controller to firmware 3.0.0 or later before use. 8BitDo’s product page lists Amazon ordering, but stock and prices depend on the retailer. The listed vibration support is specifically for N64 Online games; it does not establish that rumble works in every Switch game.
What to expect from rumble—and what to check if it does not work
Rumble is not a promise of identical feedback in every game or on every controller. Nintendo says vibration intensity can differ between controllers and between games in its HD Rumble troubleshooting guidance. A game may also support vibration differently from another title.

- Check that vibration is enabled in the game and in the console’s controller settings.
- For the 8BitDo controller on Switch 2, confirm that firmware is version 3.0.0 or later.
- Test rumble in a supported N64 Online game before concluding that the controller or connection has failed.
- If vibration works in one game but not another, the difference may be game support or intensity rather than a controller fault.
Using a controller with an original Nintendo 64
If you also want a wireless pad to work with original N64 hardware, 8BitDo’s Retro Receiver for N64 is a separate accessory. Its product information lists support for the Switch 64 Online Controller and other Bluetooth controllers, and its FAQ describes wireless connection to original N64 or Analogue 3D hardware.
