First identify whether your lock is Z-Wave or Zigbee, then choose a hub that supports that exact version. Alexa can lock the door and report its status. Voice unlocking is optional, requires a four-digit spoken PIN, and Schlage says it is currently available only in the United States.
What you need before connecting Schlage Connect to Alexa
- A Schlage Connect lock and its exact model or radio type.
- A compatible smart-home hub for that radio type. Schlage says Connect requires a hub; the lock does not connect directly to Alexa on its own.
- The hub maker’s current instructions for adding the lock and connecting supported devices to Alexa.
- The Alexa app if you want to enable voice unlocking or change its PIN.
Do not confuse Schlage Connect with Schlage Encode. Schlage describes Encode as having built-in Wi-Fi and not needing an additional hub; that is a different lock family and setup.

How to tell whether your lock is Z-Wave or Zigbee
Schlage’s Connect FAQ identifies the circuit board color as a visual clue: green indicates Z-Wave, while blue indicates Zigbee. Check the lock’s model information as well. The FAQ says model BE468 does not have the built-in alarm, while BE469 does; that model distinction does not replace checking the radio type when choosing a hub.
Schlage’s current Alexa guidance names Aeotec, Homey Pro, and a Ring Alarm base station for Schlage Connect Z-Wave Plus. Do not assume that a hub supporting one Connect radio version will support the other.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Connect version | What Schlage’s guidance establishes | What to check before setup |
|---|---|---|
| Z-Wave Plus | Schlage’s current Alexa guide lists Aeotec, Homey Pro, and Ring Alarm base station. | Confirm that the specific hub model supports your lock and that its current Alexa integration exposes the lock. |
| Zigbee | An older Schlage Alexa FAQ names Samsung SmartThings, Key by Amazon App with Cloud Cam, and Amazon Echo Plus as hub examples. | Those examples are from older guidance. Confirm current support for the exact lock and hub with Schlage and the hub maker before buying or configuring equipment. |
Schlage’s older Z-Wave FAQ also names SmartThings, Wink, Ring Alarm, Blue by ADT, and Honeywell Home. That historical list is not the same as the newer Z-Wave Plus recommendations, so use the guidance for your exact lock and verify it with the hub maker rather than treating an old list as current compatibility assurance.
How to set up Schlage Connect with Alexa
- Identify the lock. Confirm that it is a Schlage Connect model and determine whether it uses Z-Wave or Zigbee. Do not select a hub based only on its Alexa compatibility.
- Choose a compatible hub. For Z-Wave Plus, Schlage’s current Alexa guide lists Aeotec, Homey Pro, or a Ring Alarm base station. For Zigbee, verify present-day support for the exact lock and hub because the examples in Schlage’s older FAQ may no longer reflect current platform support.
- Add the lock to the hub. Follow the hub maker’s current pairing procedure. Schlage’s manual describes enrolling the lock on a Z-Wave network; it notes that remote control depends on inclusion in that network and that functionality is limited when the lock is included with a non-secure controller.
- Make the hub-connected lock available to Alexa. Use the hub and Alexa instructions for your setup. The exact app flow depends on the hub, so there is no single Schlage Connect menu path that applies to every system.
- Test locking and status. Try a lock command and ask Alexa whether the door is locked or unlocked. Use the device name assigned in your Alexa setup.
- Set up voice unlocking only if you want it. Enable it in the Alexa app’s lock settings, complete the app’s authentication step, and create the required four-digit spoken PIN.
Schlage describes Connect as battery-operated and not requiring hardwiring. Its manual and installation guidance cover the lock itself; the hub’s pairing and Alexa-linking steps are set by the hub maker.

What Alexa can do—and what requires a PIN
Schlage describes the Alexa integration as supporting door locking and lock-status checks. For example, you can say “Alexa, lock the front door” or “Alexa, is the side door unlocked?” Your exact device name may differ, and the command depends on the hub exposing the lock correctly to Alexa.
Unlocking by voice is a separate, opt-in feature. Schlage says it is disabled by default and requires enabling it in the Alexa app, followed by a four-digit PIN that you speak when asking Alexa to unlock. After three incorrect PIN attempts, Alexa disables voice unlocking; you can re-enable the feature in the app. Schlage’s current guide says voice unlocking is currently available in the United States only. Check the Alexa app and current regional support before relying on it, since availability and app behavior can change.

How to choose the right setup
- Start with the radio, not the speaker. Z-Wave and Zigbee versions have different compatibility considerations.
- Check the exact hub model. A brand or product-family name alone does not establish compatibility with your lock or Alexa.
- Decide which Alexa functions matter. Locking and checking status are distinct from enabling voice unlocking with a spoken PIN.
- Check what you already own. If your household already has a hub confirmed to support the specific lock and Alexa, you may not need another hub.
- Verify before purchasing. Compatibility lists and smart-home platform support can change; confirm the current information with Schlage and the hub maker.
Common setup problems to check
- Alexa cannot find the lock: Confirm that the lock was added to the hub and that the hub’s current Alexa connection exposes it. An Echo speaker by itself does not replace the required hub.
- The lock pairs with the hub but remote control is limited: Schlage’s manual warns that lock functionality is limited when it is included with a non-secure Z-Wave controller. Check the controller and inclusion instructions for your hub.
- A hub appears on an old compatibility list: Treat older lists as historical examples, not proof of present support. Verify the exact radio version and hub model against current manufacturer guidance.
- Alexa will lock but not unlock by voice: Voice unlocking is disabled by default. If you choose to use it, enable it in the Alexa app and set the spoken PIN; check whether it is supported in your region.
Schlage’s current compatibility statements are manufacturer guidance, not an independent reliability or security test. No measured range or performance comparison is established here.
