To use a portable SSD with an Android phone, connect it to the phone’s USB port—using a USB OTG adapter if the connectors do not match—then open the phone’s file manager and allow access to the drive. In Files by Google, supported on Android 7.0 (Nougat) and newer, the SSD appears under Storage devices after you tap the USB-available notification and choose Allow. Google’s instructions for USB storage cover that workflow.
Connect the SSD to your Android phone
- Check the connectors. Match the SSD cable to the phone’s USB port. If they do not fit, use a compatible USB OTG adapter. Samsung notes that an adapter may be needed to connect a USB drive or SSD to a Galaxy device. Samsung’s external-storage guide explains the Galaxy connection workflow.
- Connect the drive. Attach the cable or adapter to the phone, then connect the SSD. Not every phone and drive combination will work; support depends on the phone model, file system, and the power the drive needs.
- Allow access in Files by Google. Tap the notification that says USB storage is available, select the storage device, then tap Allow. Google documents this method for Android 7.0 (Nougat) and newer. If the notification does not open, disconnect the drive and reconnect it. Google’s Files by Google help page gives the steps.
Find and manage files on the SSD
In Files by Google, open Browse and look under Storage devices for the connected SSD. From there, the app supports browsing, copying, moving, renaming, and deleting files on USB storage. Other file-manager apps may use different labels or menus, so follow the prompts shown on your phone.

To copy files, select the items and use the app’s copy or move action, then choose a destination such as the phone’s internal storage or another folder on the SSD. Copying leaves the original in place; moving transfers it to the destination. Check the destination before deleting anything, especially when managing the only copy of important files.

Samsung also documents using external storage as part of a Smart Switch backup and restore: back up content from the old device to external storage, connect that storage to the new Galaxy, and restore through Smart Switch. The exact prompts may depend on the devices and software versions. See Samsung’s Smart Switch and external-storage instructions.

Check compatibility before relying on the drive
- Phone support: Check the support information for your exact phone model to confirm it can act as a USB host and access external storage. Support should not be assumed across all Android phones.
- Connector and adapter: A USB OTG adapter may be required when the phone and SSD cable use different connectors.
- File system: Confirm the phone supports the file system used by the SSD. Samsung’s manual for the Portable SSD T7 Shield says Android is supported and identifies the drive’s preformatted exFAT file system as supported by Android. That statement applies to the T7 Shield; it does not establish universal exFAT or SSD support on every Android phone. Read the T7 Shield user manual.
- Power requirements: The phone must be able to supply enough power for the drive, or the connection may fail. Samsung cautions that not all Galaxy models support external storage devices that use excessive power. Samsung’s Galaxy backup and restore support page discusses this limitation.
Troubleshoot an SSD that is not recognized
- Reconnect it. Unplug the drive and connect it again. Google specifically recommends removing and reconnecting USB storage if its notification does not open.
- Check the cable and adapter. Make sure the connectors fit securely and that any OTG adapter is appropriate for the phone and drive. Samsung’s troubleshooting guide also recommends checking the adapter and USB transfer settings. See Samsung’s USB-drive recognition steps.
- Check power and the phone port. A drive that needs more power than the phone can provide may not mount; a damaged USB port can also prevent recognition. Samsung lists both power-related compatibility and port damage among possible concerns.
- Do not format as an early fix. Formatting can erase the SSD’s contents, and the cited support steps do not establish it as the right remedy for every recognition problem. Protect any files on the drive before considering a format.
