Connect and select the camera
- Check model and OS support. Use GoPro’s current webcam instructions for the exact camera and computer combination. Do not assume that a workflow documented for one model applies to another.
- Install or update only as directed. Follow the instructions for your camera’s current setup. GoPro’s HERO8 launch guidance from July 2020 required a camera firmware update and desktop utility, but that dated sequence should not be treated as a universal requirement today.
- Connect the GoPro by USB-C. The HERO10 Black manual says to connect the camera to the computer with the included cable. If the computer does not detect the camera, check that the cable supports data; the cited GoPro pages do not establish a complete troubleshooting sequence.
- Choose the GoPro in your video app. Open the app’s camera or video settings and select the GoPro source if it appears. GoPro documented this selection step for HERO8 in 2020, but its historical app list is not a guarantee of current compatibility.
- Check the picture in the app. Frame the shot and confirm exposure and focus in the actual call or capture application. GoPro’s HERO10 manual describes camera exposure controls, but the available material does not establish a dedicated webcam lighting or audio workflow.
Compatibility varies by model and date
HERO10 Black
GoPro’s HERO10 Black product listing advertises Webcam Mode and directs users to the GoPro Webcam App. The listing labels Windows support as beta. Because software status can change, check the current listing and setup page before depending on Windows support for a time-sensitive call or production.
HERO8 Black
In an announcement dated July 9, 2020, GoPro described webcam use after a beta firmware update and installation of its desktop utility. At launch, the utility was available for Mac OS while Windows support was still in development. Those are launch-era details, not a current promise about supported systems.

That 2020 announcement listed Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Discord, BlueJeans, Webex, Skype, Facebook Rooms, Facebook Messenger, and Slack in Google Chrome on Mac OS. Treat the list as historical documentation, not a guarantee that every app, browser, or configuration still works.
Webcam connection is different from live streaming
In webcam mode, the GoPro sends its camera feed to a computer so another application can use it as a camera source. Direct live streaming is a separate camera-and-app workflow. GoPro’s live-streaming guide describes streaming through the GoPro app, with direct platform options such as Facebook, Twitch, and YouTube, as well as RTMP destinations such as Vimeo. Platform and account requirements may change, so check the GoPro live-streaming guide separately if you want to stream directly rather than use the camera as a computer webcam.

Positioning, resolution, and audio
A stable mount or tripod can make it easier to frame a call or demonstration; it is optional. GoPro’s 2020 HERO8 announcement mentioned its Shorty grip-and-tripod mount as one way to position a camera for a cooking-class view. Choose positioning that suits your shot rather than assuming an accessory is required.

What to verify if the camera does not appear
- Confirm GoPro lists your exact camera and operating system in its current webcam instructions.
- Check that the USB-C cable supports data, not just charging.
- Make sure you followed any model-specific update or utility-installation steps GoPro currently requires.
- Reopen the video app’s camera settings and look for the GoPro source.
- If it remains unavailable, consult GoPro’s current troubleshooting guidance; the setup materials cited here do not specify a complete recovery procedure.
