USB Power Delivery (USB PD) is a USB power-delivery specification that lets compatible devices negotiate how much power to send over a USB connection. It can support power in either direction and, with compatible equipment, up to 240 W. USB-C is the connector system—not a guarantee that a device, charger, or cable supports USB PD or any particular wattage.
What does USB PD mean?
USB PD means USB Power Delivery. The USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) describes it as a way to provide more flexible power delivery alongside data over one cable. Rather than relying on a single fixed charging level, compatible equipment communicates to establish a power arrangement that the connected devices can support.

That negotiation makes USB PD useful for low-power devices as well as higher-power applications. It also means the power available in a particular setup depends on the source, the device receiving power, and the cable between them.

Is USB Power Delivery the same as USB-C?
No. USB PD is the power-delivery specification; USB Type-C (USB-C) is the connector and cable system. USB-C equipment may support USB PD, but the connector’s shape alone does not establish whether it does or how much power it can handle. USB-IF’s high-power capabilities discussed here apply to compatible USB Type-C cables and connectors.

How much power can USB PD deliver?
USB-IF’s overview of USB PD Revision 3.1, announced in 2021, describes a maximum of up to 240 W over a full-featured USB Type-C cable and connector. Before that revision, the overview says, USB PD was limited to 100 W using 20 V and cables rated for 5 A. The higher capability uses fixed voltage levels of 28 V for up to 140 W, 36 V for up to 180 W, and 48 V for up to 240 W. These are specification capabilities, not a promise that any particular USB-C port or product can supply that much power. USB-IF’s overview of USB PD

How does power negotiation work in practice?
A power source and a device receiving power determine a supported arrangement through USB PD. The roles are not permanently fixed: USB-IF says either the host or peripheral may provide power under the protocol. Which direction is possible depends on the products and their configuration.
USB-IF gives examples of possible arrangements: a wall-powered monitor charging a laptop while displaying its picture; a laptop or charger passing power through the laptop’s USB ports; and a battery-powered device temporarily returning power when another device needs it. These illustrate what compatible systems can do, not what every monitor, laptop, or port will do.

How to check whether a charger, device, and cable are compatible
Before relying on a USB PD setup, compare the capabilities of all three parts of the connection:
- Device: Check the power input and charging profiles it accepts.
- Charger or other power source: Check its output capability and the profiles it offers.
- Cable: Confirm it is rated for the intended power level, especially for high-power use.
- Power direction: For pass-through or reverse charging, verify that the relevant ports can act as a source, a sink, or both as needed.
A higher-rated charger cannot make a device accept more power than it supports, and a cable or port with a lower capability can limit the connection. Check the specifications for the actual products rather than inferring support from a USB-C connector.

What USB PD does—and does not—tell you about a product
USB PD identifies a protocol for negotiating power; it does not by itself establish the performance of a particular retail product. USB-IF references compliance testing and an Integrators List, and its document library lists a Q3 2026 USB PD Compliance Test Specification dated May 31, 2026. Those resources provide standards and testing context, but a product listing’s USB-C connector or PD label alone is not proof that a specific model is certified or supports a particular power level.
