For a portable setup that needs video, Ethernet, USB data and card readers, the Anker 555 USB-C Hub (8-in-1) is one concrete option. For a permanent desk setup with broader docking needs, consider a powered dock such as the CalDigit TS4 instead. Neither is a universal pick: confirm your laptop’s port capabilities and power requirements before buying.
Start with your laptop’s USB-C port
A USB-C connector describes the plug, not every feature the port supports. Before choosing a hub, check your laptop’s specifications for the specific port you plan to use.

- For HDMI video: the host port must support DisplayPort Alt Mode for the Anker 555’s HDMI output to work.
- For charging through the hub: the host port must support USB Power Delivery (PD).
- For both: verify both capabilities; one does not imply the other.
Anker’s compatibility guidance for the 555 explains these requirements: Anker 555 product page. If your laptop’s documentation does not make the port capabilities clear, ask the manufacturer or check the laptop’s support page before relying on video or charging.
Choose a portable hub or a desk dock
A compact multiport hub is designed to add commonly needed connections without turning a laptop setup into a fixed workstation. A powered dock is a different class of product for a more permanent desk arrangement and broader docking requirements.

Compact hub: Anker 555 USB-C Hub (8-in-1)
The Anker 555 is an example for an everyday setup that needs HDMI, Ethernet, USB data and SD or microSD readers. Anker specifies up to 85W of laptop pass-through from a 100W PD input, HDMI output up to 4K at 60Hz, 10Gbps data ports, 1Gbps Ethernet, and UHS-I SD and microSD card readers. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative test results. See the Anker 555 specifications.
Powered desk dock: CalDigit TS4
If you want a powered dock for a fixed desk setup, the CalDigit TS4 is a separate alternative rather than a direct portable-hub comparison. CalDigit specifies up to 98W host charging and publishes downstream power and port specifications on its TS4 product page. Check the dock’s detailed port list against your peripherals and confirm host compatibility before choosing it.

Compare the connections you will actually use
Port counts alone can be misleading. Match each port to a device and distinguish data, display and power connections.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- USB-A and USB-C data: check the number and data speed of ports for storage, input devices and other peripherals. A USB-C-shaped port is not necessarily a data port.
- HDMI: check both the maximum resolution and refresh rate, and whether your laptop can supply the required display mode.
- Ethernet: confirm whether the hub’s wired network speed meets your needs. The Anker 555 is specified for 1Gbps Ethernet.
- Card readers: check whether you need SD, microSD or both, and the supported card standard. The 555 specifies UHS-I readers.
- Power input: do not count a charge-only PD input as a USB data or video connection. On the 555, PD-IN is for charging only.
Understand charging and power pass-through
For the Anker 555, Anker specifies up to 85W of laptop pass-through when using a 100W PD charger and cable. The hub uses some input power for its own operation, so the laptop does not receive the full 100W. The charger and cable are not included. Anker’s product page and USB-C hub guide describe the input and host requirements.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
“Up to” is a maximum specification, not a guarantee that every laptop will charge at that rate. Compare the hub’s stated host output with your laptop’s charging requirements, and make sure the host port supports PD. If the laptop requires more power than the hub can pass through, charging may be slower or insufficient under load.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check display output against the laptop
Anker specifies the 555’s HDMI port for up to 4K at 60Hz. That describes the hub’s maximum output specification; it does not establish that every laptop connected to it can drive that mode. The host must support DisplayPort Alt Mode, and the laptop’s graphics and port specifications must support the display mode you want. Confirm those details for your particular laptop before purchase.

A practical buying checklist
- Identify the exact laptop port you will use and verify its display and PD capabilities.
- List the devices you need to connect, including USB peripherals, displays, wired Ethernet and memory cards.
- For each candidate, match port type and data speed to the device; check HDMI resolution and refresh rate, Ethernet speed and card formats.
- If charging through the hub matters, compare the stated host-charging wattage with the laptop’s requirements, and account for any required charger and cable.
- Decide whether you need a compact portable hub or a powered desk dock, then verify host compatibility and the complete port list.
- Check the current product listing for price, stock and included accessories; these can change.
Anker’s editorial selection guide puts the principle simply: “The best USB-C hub for you is the one that covers your actual needs—nothing more, nothing less.” Anker’s USB-C hub guide is the source of that guidance.
