Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Both a USB flash drive and an external hard drive can play media on a TV if that exact model recognizes the drive and supports the files on it. A flash drive is usually the simpler choice for a small, portable collection; an external hard drive is more practical for a larger library, but capacity, file-system, and power limits are more likely to matter. Check the television’s playback requirements before buying or reformatting a drive.
Which is better for TV media playback?
Choose by the size of your collection and the TV’s specifications—not by the drive type alone. A flash drive is compact and easy to move between devices. An external hard drive can hold a larger library, but some models may need more power than the TV’s USB port supplies. Neither type guarantees that a particular video will play: the TV must recognize the storage device and support the file’s container and audio and video codecs.

Playback is different from TV recording or device storage. Check the model’s guidance for USB media playback specifically; recording may have separate requirements and limits.
How the two options compare
| Consideration | USB flash drive | External USB hard drive | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Library size | Often convenient for a modest collection. | Often more suitable for a larger library. | The TV’s supported playback capacity. For example, LG USA’s July 17, 2026 guide recommends USB memory of 32 GB or less and external hard disks of 2 TB or less; these are LG recommendations, not universal limits. LG’s USB playback guide. |
| Portability | Small and easy to carry between devices. | Typically larger; portable models may need more power. | Whether the TV recognizes the device and whether the hard drive needs a dedicated port or external power. |
| File system | Either type must use a file system the TV supports. | Check the exact model’s manual. LG cites FAT32 or NTFS; Samsung Hong Kong lists FAT, exFAT, and NTFS for supported devices. Reformatting erases data, so make a backup first. | |
| Large individual files | The file system, rather than whether storage is flash or a hard disk, can impose a file-size limit. | Sony’s guidance for covered BRAVIA models cites a 4 GB maximum file size for FAT32. Use another format only if the TV supports it. | |
| Power | Often a low-power option, but TV support still matters. | Some drives can draw more power than a TV port provides. | LG’s 2026 guide recommends a hard disk rated at 5 V and 500 mA or less. Sony recommends an AC-powered drive for some older model groups. |
| Video compatibility | Storage type does not determine which media formats play. | Check the supported container, video and audio codecs, resolution, and profile for the TV and its playback app. | |
Check your TV before choosing or formatting a drive
- Find the complete TV model number. Open that model’s manual or current manufacturer support page; limits can differ by model, region, and playback app.
- Confirm USB playback support. A TV can have USB ports with different functions, so do not assume every port plays media.
- Check playback capacity and file systems. Do not rely on a limit listed for recording or device storage if you want to play files.
- Check the maximum individual file size. If a video exceeds the TV’s FAT32 limit, choose a different file system only if the TV supports it. Back up the drive before reformatting.
- Verify the media formats. An extension such as .mp4 or .mkv does not by itself confirm that the video and audio streams inside are compatible.
- Check hard-drive power requirements. Use a designated high-current USB port if the manual calls for one, or a supported externally powered drive if needed.
- Test one representative file first. If it works, copy the rest of the library. Follow the TV’s instructions for safely ejecting the drive; LG warns not to unplug it before ejection completes.
Why manufacturer capacity figures are not universal
Published limits are model-specific examples, not a general rule for every TV. LG USA’s guide dated July 17, 2026 recommends USB memory up to 32 GB and external hard disks up to 2 TB, and says higher-capacity storage may not work smoothly. Its guide also cites FAT32 or NTFS and recommends an HDD rated at 5 V and 500 mA or less. See LG’s guidance.

Sony’s BRAVIA support guidance varies by series and whether a drive is used for playback or device storage. Some listed newer series support FAT32, exFAT, and NTFS playback up to 32 TB; other groups have lower limits. Sony also lists USB output examples of 500 mA for USB 2.0 and 900 mA for some USB 3.x ports, and recommends AC power for certain older models. Consult the table for your particular series rather than applying its highest listed figure to all BRAVIA TVs. See Sony’s BRAVIA HDD compatibility guidance.
Samsung Hong Kong says compatible Smart TVs can play media from USB mass-storage-class devices, lists FAT, exFAT, and NTFS among supported file systems, and advises using a dedicated HDD port where available. Its guidance is regional and model-specific. See Samsung Hong Kong’s USB media guidance.

Older Sony format guidance illustrates why it is important to match the advice to the TV’s age and model: the legacy guide lists FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, and exFAT, and says files larger than 4 GB require exFAT. It was last modified in 2011 and applies to the products it covers, not current Sony TVs generally. See Sony’s legacy USB file-format guide.

If the TV sees the drive but will not play a video
- Check the file system and file size. A drive may be recognized while a particular file exceeds the applicable limit. Sony’s 4 GB FAT32 limit applies to the BRAVIA models covered by its relevant guidance.
- Check the video and audio formats. The file extension alone does not establish codec compatibility. Sony notes that not all files are guaranteed to play, and LG says supported extensions and codecs vary by model.
- Check power if the drive disconnects or is not recognized reliably. Follow the TV maker’s port and external-power instructions, especially for a hard drive.
- Check the playback app and exact model documentation. The same drive or file may behave differently across TV models and apps.
