USB Drive Not Recognized? Find It in Windows or macOS Without Losing Files

Check whether Windows or macOS detects the USB device, volume, or drive letter—and avoid destructive repair steps until important files are safe.

If a USB drive is not recognized, first check the connection, then find out whether the computer sees the physical device but cannot mount its volume. On Windows, use Device Manager and Disk Management; on a Mac, use Disk Utility with View > Show All Devices. Do not initialize, erase, or format a drive that may contain files you need: those actions can destroy data.

First, protect the files and narrow down the problem

“Not recognized” can describe several different states: the device may be absent altogether, detected by the operating system but missing a mounted volume or drive letter, or visible but read-only. Those states call for different fixes. Start with the least risky checks and note exactly where the drive appears.

  • Unplug the drive and reconnect it. Try another USB port and connect directly to the computer rather than through a hub, dock, or adapter.
  • If the drive needs external power, check that its power supply is connected. Apple also recommends checking the cable and connections for external devices.
  • If possible, try the drive on another computer. If it works there, the first computer’s port, connection path, or software may be involved; if it fails on multiple computers, the drive or its cable may be at fault. This comparison is a diagnostic clue, not proof of a specific failure.
  • Before making changes, decide whether the files matter. Do not initialize, create a new volume, erase, or format a disk containing data you want to keep. Microsoft warns that formatting a volume destroys data. If files are valuable and the drive is inaccessible, consider professional recovery before attempting destructive repairs.

For Windows USB-C connection problems, Microsoft lists power, port, cable, hub, and device or driver issues among possible causes: Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance.

What does the computer actually detect?

Identify the drive’s state before choosing a fix. On Windows, Device Manager shows whether a USB device has a warning or error status, while Disk Management shows disks and volumes. On macOS, Disk Utility can show the physical device and its volumes. A drive absent from a disk utility is a different case from one that appears there without a usable volume.

  • Absent from the disk utility: Recheck the port, cable, hub, and power. If it remains absent after direct-connection checks, hardware service or recovery may be more appropriate than repeated software changes.
  • Present as a device, but no usable volume: Check the disk and volume status. A missing drive letter on Windows or an unmounted volume on a Mac may be the issue; do not assume the disk is blank.
  • Visible but read-only: Investigate the file-system format and permissions. On macOS, NTFS may be readable but Disk Utility does not support writing to NTFS. This is not the same as a drive that the Mac cannot detect.

Fix a USB drive Windows detects but does not show

These steps apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Follow them in order, stopping if a step risks files you need.

  1. Check the connection. Reconnect the drive, try another port, and bypass any hub or dock. If Windows reports, “The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it,” note that message and check the device’s status in Device Manager.
  2. Inspect Device Manager. Right-click Start, open Device Manager, and look for a warning-marked USB device. Open its Properties and record the message under Device status, including any error code. Use Microsoft’s Device Manager error-code guidance for a code-specific resolution. If the code is not covered, Microsoft directs users to the device vendor or Microsoft support. Avoid random third-party driver utilities.
  3. Check Disk Management. Right-click Start and select Disk Management, or open it by running diskmgmt.msc. Look for the disk and inspect whether its volume is present, lacks a drive letter, is offline, or is unallocated. Microsoft explains the Disk Management statuses and actions in its Windows Disk Management guide.
  4. If an intact volume lacks a drive letter, investigate assigning one. Only do this when you have identified the correct disk and volume. Do not treat an unfamiliar or unallocated disk as empty: initialization is intended for a new disk, and formatting an existing volume destroys its data.

Fix a USB drive that does not appear on a Mac

  1. Check the connection and power. Reconnect the drive, try another Mac port, and connect directly rather than through a hub. If a powered hub is necessary, connect it to its AC adapter. Apple lists these checks for power-related USB recognition errors in its USB device power guidance.
  2. Show all devices in Disk Utility. Open Disk Utility and choose View > Show All Devices, if that option is available. Check whether the physical storage device, a container, or a volume appears. Apple’s steps are in How to repair a Mac storage device with Disk Utility.
  3. If the device appears, consider First Aid only with a current backup. First Aid checks and repairs certain formatting and directory-structure errors. Apple recommends working through the device hierarchy as described in its Disk Utility guide. It cannot detect or repair every disk problem, so a failed First Aid attempt does not establish that erasing the disk will recover its files.
  4. If it is absent, check again after removing other variables. Check the cable, connections, and power; disconnect nonessential devices and retry. If the storage device still does not appear in Disk Utility, Apple says the Mac or the device might need service.

If the drive appears but is read-only

A drive that appears in Finder or Disk Utility but will not accept files may have a format limitation or a permissions issue, rather than a detection problem. Apple says macOS may read NTFS but Disk Utility does not support writing to it. APFS and Mac OS Extended are Mac formats; MS-DOS (FAT) and ExFAT are Windows-compatible formats. Check the format before deciding what to do, and do not reformat if the drive contains files you need. Apple’s external-drive write guidance explains the format distinction.

When to stop troubleshooting

Repeated software changes are not a safe substitute for diagnosis. If the drive remains physically absent after you have checked a direct connection, another port, cable, and power, consider service for the computer or storage device. Apple specifically notes that a storage device missing from Disk Utility may need service. If the data is valuable, seek professional recovery advice before erasing, formatting, or otherwise changing the disk.

For a drive that does appear, keep the next action matched to the observed state: resolve a documented Device Manager code, investigate a missing drive letter, check a Mac volume or format, or use First Aid for the limited errors it can address. Do not initialize or format an unknown disk just to make it show up.
