To check whether Windows 11 recorded a USB drive’s installation, open %SystemRoot%infSetupAPI.dev.log—usually C:WindowsINFSetupAPI.dev.log—and search for its USB hardware identifier. The log can provide evidence that Windows handled device installation, but it is not a complete connection timeline and cannot establish who used a drive or which files were accessed.
Where to find the Windows 11 USB history log
Microsoft identifies SetupAPI.dev.log as the plain-text device installation log. Its default location is the Windows INF directory, %SystemRoot%inf, typically C:WindowsINF. Microsoft’s SetupAPI log documentation explains what the log records.

- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
%SystemRoot%infin the address bar and press Enter. - Open
SetupAPI.dev.login a text editor. If Windows denies access, open the editor with appropriate administrator rights and then open the log. Read it without editing it. - Use the editor’s Find command to search for
USBVID_, or search for a known vendor or product identifier. - Review the surrounding text to determine whether the match appears in a device-installation section. Do not treat a matching string by itself as proof of a particular person’s activity.
How to identify a likely device entry
USB hardware identifiers can include a vendor ID (VID), product ID (PID), and revision value. Windows derives these identifiers from the USB device descriptor; Microsoft’s USB identifier documentation describes their format.

What a SetupAPI entry can—and cannot—show
An entry is evidence that Windows processed device installation information. That is narrower than proof that someone browsed the drive, copied files, or connected it at every time it was used. The log is not established as a complete record of every USB insertion and removal, and Microsoft’s cited documentation does not specify a universal retention period.
- It can help: locate installation-related records associated with a USB device identifier.
- It cannot establish on its own: who connected the device, what files were accessed, or a complete connection history.
- Absence is not definitive: a relevant record may be missing, truncated, or no longer present in the available log.
When to use registry details or USB tracing
| Option | What it is for | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
SetupAPI.dev.log |
A practical starting point for device-installation records. | Most people checking whether Windows recorded installation. |
| Registry/device information | Lower-level information available after a USB device is enumerated; Microsoft’s guidance focuses on device-specific registry settings. | Advanced inspection or development work. See Microsoft’s USB device registry documentation; do not modify registry keys just to check history. |
| USB ETW tracing | Detailed USB stack event capture for debugging and troubleshooting. | Developers and experienced troubleshooters familiar with USB drivers and specifications. See Microsoft’s USB Event Tracing for Windows overview. |
USB ETW tracing is diagnostic tracing, not a simple way to recover a complete past history. Microsoft describes it as a debugging mechanism; interpreting its output requires technical knowledge. It is not needed for the basic SetupAPI check.

If you are investigating a removable-device policy issue
For relevant removable-device policy troubleshooting, Microsoft’s guidance for managing removable devices through Group Policy includes reviewing SetupAPI.dev.log. That use is troubleshooting a policy-related issue, not reconstructing every past connection.
